"Where did you get that ring?"

I looked up from where I crouched beside the restrained assassin, the silver band still cold between my fingers. Dante's voice carried an edge I hadn't heard from him even during the shooting, sharper, more urgent.

"It was on the floor," I said. "Near him."

I turned it over slowly, studying the engraved symbol pressed into its surface. The metal felt heavier than it should, dense in a way that made my palm ache faintly. Something about the shape

"Nobody leaves this building."Mara stood beside me, staring at the photograph on my phone. "That includes you."The picture was clear enough to be cruel. Me stepping out of the car, one hand on the door, the house's entrance sharp behind me. The angle was too high and too far back to be anyone's idea of an accident. Whoever took it had stood beyond the gate."How long have they been watching us?" Mara asked."I don't know. That's what we're going to find out."I said it because it was true. I'd learned that saying I don't know in a steady voice was worth more than any invented certainty.I asked for the man who kept the property's records, and the two who watched the road. I wanted the original file if there was one, and a timestamp I could trust. I wanted to know which entrance this was, and whether the camera sat inside our grounds or outside them. And I wanted every car the gate cameras had logged in the last month."Do we seal the gates?" someone asked."Restrict movement around

"If you're here to tell us the Moretti family is finished, save your breath."The woman in the doorway had a pistol in one hand and half a piece of bread in the other. I looked at the pistol. Then at the bread."I was going to ask for somewhere to sleep."She didn't lower the weapon. "Then you picked a terrible house."I told her my name. She didn't blink. Plenty of people could say a name, she said. So I told her what my father used to say when he walked a property at night, checking the latches. A door is only a rumor until you lock it. Something moved in her face, and the barrel dropped an inch."Mara," she said. "Don't thank me."The house had been lived in by people who expected to leave in a hurry. A chair faced the front door. One window was papered over so no silhouette showed at night. A kettle ticked on a small stove, and a radio murmured low enough that you could still hear footsteps outside. A man by the back wall watched me without pretending otherwise."Why are you here?

  • SOLD TO THE DEVIL KING   CHAPTER 74: THE PRICE OF HIS NAME

"Tell me that isn't your signature."Dante stared at the page. "It isn't."Marco leaned over the table. "The record says it was authorized through your office.""Then the record is wrong."The lights flickered. A second later every phone in the room started ringing. Marco silenced the unsecured ones and let a single officer answer the verified line, and I was oddly comforted by that. Even now, someone still followed procedure. The document authorized moving security personnel and information tied to the old agreement between our families. It carried Dante's credentials. After the missing logs and the extraction order, it made everything look like a pattern, and I understood that was the point. Someone wasn't only stealing from him. They were writing his history for him."Did the transfer happen?" Dante asked."Some of it," Marco said. "We don't know who approved it, or what was changed."Dante ordered every copy preserved. He didn't order an arre

"You knew my father before the massacre."Dante stopped halfway out of his jacket."Who told you that?"I laid the old photograph on the table. "Does it matter?"He looked at it. For the first time since I'd met him, Dante De Luca seemed to be searching for an answer he didn't have. The house was small, a safe property two hours from the mansion, with one guard walking the corridor and a secured telephone on a bare desk. After the convoy and the fire at Tomasso's, the mansion couldn't be trusted. Marco was running the response from there. We had been given a room furnished for work, not comfort. My father stood in the photograph beside Dante's, a third man half turned between them."That's my father's place," Dante said slowly. "He held meetings there that never went into any record. He took me once and left me in the car." He touched the edge of the picture. "I've never seen this.""Who's the third man?""I don't know.""What did our fathers agree to?""I was never told."I'd spent w

"Lock every gate."Marco had barely finished the sentence when the first alarm went off. A second one answered from the east wing, thinner and higher, and then the lights in the corridor died.Dante reached for his weapon. "Nobody leaves this house."From somewhere below us came the sound of glass breaking.Marco looked at him. "We're already too late."The emergency lights came on a few seconds later, uneven and red, throwing everyone's shadow in the wrong direction. A guard shouted an instruction on the stairs and a radio answered with static, then another voice cut across it, then another, all of them talking at once. The reports came in pieces, and none of them agreed. The east-wing camera feed had gone offline. One of the outer gates was reporting an access alarm. A guard swore he'd heard glass go near a service entrance. The communications desk couldn't say whether the alarms meant an intruder or a fault somewhere in the system.I stood with my

"Who gave you that key?"Dante stood in the doorway. I closed my hand around the paper."A man who apparently knows more about my father than either of us."His gaze moved to the open ledger on the desk, its worn spine refusing to lie flat. Then to me."Alessia.""Don't."He stopped. He had one foot over the threshold and he simply stopped, and it struck me that this was the first time I had asked him not to come closer and watched him actually listen.I had put myself between him and the desk without noticing. He noticed. He didn't say so.Outside, a guard's footsteps passed the door and faded. The small brass key sat beside the lamp where I'd left it, and I stared at it because it was easier than looking at him."The Council member gave it to me after the hearing," I said. "He said my father trusted someone to keep it safe. He wouldn't say who.""Did he mention Gabriel?""I asked. He denied it.""Did he say how the Council came to have the key at all?""No. He was much more helpful
