LIANA'S POV

I didn't even bother setting an alarm. For the first time in months, I didn't feel compelled to wake up well before sunrise to scroll through emails or mentally rehearse strategy notes. When I finally sat up, the sky outside the window was a light gray-blue, sunlight peeking softly past the blinds. My first thought was Cam.

I found her on the living room floor, sitting on the carpet, coloring with her sketch pad. Her face lit up at the sight of me. "Mommy! You're home?" she shouted, releasing her crayons.

I sat beside her and wrapped my arms around her. "I'm not working today," I whispered against her hair.

She relaxed back, eyes wide open. "Really?"

I nodded. "Really... It's our day. Just you, grandma, and me. So I would drop you off at school and after that, I have a surprise for you."

Her joy scream rang out down the hallway as she dashed off to fetch my mother. The sound triggered something inside me that had long been frozen.

I took Cam to school myself afterwards an

  • STEP ASIDE EX-HUSBAND: THE RISE OF LIANA   CHAPTER 85

Liana's POVLater that night, after tucking Cam in bed with her favorite bunny wrapped around her chest, I stood outside her door just watching her sleep. Her nightlight sent a warm, golden light across her face. She looked so peaceful… so unaware of how close our world had come to shattering.I rested against the door, my arms folded across my chest. Mum crept up behind me, a cup of tea in her hand. She handed it to me and did not say a word.We stood shoulder to shoulder for a long, moment."She reacted better than I expected," I finally said, breaking the silence.Mum hummed softly. "Children are stronger than we think they are. Particularly when they've got lots of love around them."I sipped the tea slowly. It was calming… Just what I needed."Do you think I did the right thing?" I asked her. "Telling her now?""You did what you had to do," she said. "There's no perfect time for brutal truths. There's only truth."I nodded. Looking at her, I made up my mind it was time to tell Mu

  • STEP ASIDE EX-HUSBAND: THE RISE OF LIANA   CHAPTER 84

Liana's POVThe evening meal was strangely quiet. I watched Cam pick at her mashed potatoes then all of a study, she raid her head in one fluid motion and asked me a question. "Mummy?" she asked, throwimg jabs at her mashed potatoes but not eating, her little fingers pushing the food around on the plate instead of into her mouth. "That man in the park... the one you told to stay away… was he my daddy?"The question was a total shock. I thought she had forgotten since she didn't say anything about it. My fork slipped, and it clanged against my plate and for a moment, I couldn't remember how to breathe. Mum stopped cutting on the other side of the table, knife halted on the roast chicken in front of her. The room was suddwnly filled with just the deafening sound of silence. I tried ro speak but I was speechless. "No," I finally said but Mum's eyes rose to me, calm but daring. The kind of look that said “time to stop running and hiding”. It was a look a mother could only give when she

LIANA'S POVThe moment the bell buzzed and I heard the intercom beep on the security system, I already had a bad feeling. Something in the stillness of the moment sent shivers down my spine. I stepped out just as the uniformed messenger stepped out of the car, sealed manila envelope in his gloved hand."Miss Davids?" he asked."Yes."He held it out to me, polite but clearly used to uncomfortable encounters. "Signed delivery. Acceptance, please."I signed in silence, fingers never leaving the weighty envelope. The moment he was out of sight, I turned around to face the house again, knuckles tightened around the rim of the envelope as I flung shut the door. I slammed it on the kitchen counter, heart already pounding before I tore it open. The words on the first page drained all the color out of my face. It suddenly felt heavier, heavier both in weight and in significance.Petition for Full Custody of Minor: Cam Davids.I blinked, as if I'd misread it. As if this was some sort of delusi

DOMINIC'S POVLiana has really evolved. Who would have thought that the woman I once had under my finger could tell me off like that. The most annoying part is that I did. she won. Not only did I know that if I hung around one more second, I'd lose it in front of my daughter but I also wasn't going to let Liana witness me losing my mind like some street lunatic. But damn, I was already lost. There was no use denying it anymore.I crept by the side entrance of the park, the cacophony in my skull louder than the shouts of families whispering of me and what had happened or of branches creaking overhead. A father tossed his boy over his shoulder, a girl laughed in the distance, and it all stabbed my ribs with something I barely recognized.I'd just caught a glimpse of my child. And she didn't even know who I was. She looked straight at me like I was some stranger and not her dad. My hand went to my chest, as I felt a spasm of hurt and sharpness, as I made my way to my car. I got in, clos

  • STEP ASIDE EX-HUSBAND: THE RISE OF LIANA   CHAPTER 80

LIANA'S POVThe living room was the only bright space in the dark house, and that was because the glow of the laptop lighted it up. I stood beside the couch on the edge with stiff shoulders, the torn section of the guest register sitting on my keyboard like a smoking gun. That page had become stuck in my head, rolling over endless questions without answers. I didn't even need to look at it to see it.I had not touched my dinner, neither had I taken off my work clothes. My heels were half-kicked off, as I paced between the window and the coffee table. The doorbell rang, and I startled. It was quite late for visitors and I really wasn't in the mood for any. I crept hesitantly to the door, cautiously, then looked through the peephole.Standing on the front pouch is black a sweatshirt and slacks was Stanley. I signed softly and opened the door without speaking. He stretched out a little brown bag. "Brought takeout. Considering who I was coming to visit, I figured you hadn't eaten."He was
