NYLA’S POV

By eight thirty, I was standing in front of the mirror, adjusting the sleeve of my blouse for the third time.

My résumé sat inside the folder on my bed, and my interview confirmation was open on my phone. Everything was ready, yet I kept finding reasons to delay leaving.

My gaze drifted toward the door.

Lucian might already be downstairs.

I picked up my handbag, checked that I had everything, and left my room before I could change my mind.

Mom was in the dining room, speaking to Xavi

LUCIAN’S POVBy eight the next morning, I was standing outside my father’s office.Daniel had called twice about the documents awaiting my approval, but I ignored both calls. Nothing on my desk mattered until I settled things with Xavier.I knocked once and entered. My father stood behind his desk, fastening his cufflinks. He barely glanced at me before returning his attention to the papers in front of him.“You’re early.”“You asked to discuss my future.”That earned me a look.“Close the door.”I did.He gestured toward the chair opposite him, but I remained standing.“Let’s not waste time,” he said. “The photograph from the auction has attracted attention. People are asking questions, and I won’t have my family dragged through a scandal because you cannot control yourself.”“Nothing happened at the auction.”“Then why did you look at Nyla as though the room contained no one else?”I said nothing. His expression hardened. “Your silence is becoming a habit, Lucian. One I’m losing pat

NYLA’S POVI stared at Damon’s message until my screen dimmed. There's something I'd like to discuss with you. Something concerning Lucian. Why was he suddenly interested in my relationship with Lucian?I typed a reply.ME: What do you want to discuss? His response came almost immediately.DAMON: Not over text. Can we meet tomorrow?I hesitated before answering.ME: Fine. Somewhere public.DAMON: Of course. I'll send you the details.I set my phone aside, but sleep was suddenly out of reach.Damon had been pleasant during our date. He hadn't pressured me when I refused to kiss him, and he'd seemed genuinely interested in getting to know me.Yet I couldn't ignore the questions he'd asked Audrey. Was this about Lucian's behavior at the banquet? Or had Damon noticed something else?I wouldn't get answers by guessing. The following afternoon, Damon chose a quiet café downtown.I arrived a few minutes early and ordered a drink while I waited. When he walked in, he greeted me with a smile,

NYLA’S POVI barely made it upstairs before my phone rang.Audrey.“Finally!” she exclaimed when I answered. “I was beginning to think you'd forgotten I existed.”“I've been busy.”“Busy doing what?”“Trying to survive my life.”She laughed. “That sounds serious. Tell me everything.”I sat on the edge of my bed, glancing at the sketchbook beside me.“Lucian told me something yesterday.”“Lucian?” Her voice sharpened. “What did he do now?”“He said we met three years ago.”Silence.“Wait. Before the party?”“Yes.”“How?”“He saw me at a cemetery when he visited his mother’s grave. Apparently, I was there too.”Audrey paused. “Do you remember him?”“No.”“Are you sure?”“Would I be asking you if I remembered?”“Fair point.” She hesitated. “What does he want you to do with this information?”I rubbed my forehead.“He said he's been remembering me all this time. That he wanted a chance with me before everything happened between our parents.”“And how do you feel about that?”I stared at t

LUCIAN’S POV“Close the door.”My father didn’t look up when I entered his office the following morning.I shut it behind me.“You wanted to discuss my future.”“Sit down.”I remained standing.Xavier finally raised his eyes. “Must you turn every simple request into a challenge?”“Must you turn every conversation into a business meeting?”His mouth tightened. He placed the document in his hand on the desk.“The photograph from the auction has created unnecessary speculation. I expect you to deal with it.”“Daniel is handling the article.”“I’m not talking about the article.” His gaze sharpened. “I’m talking about your behavior around Nyla.”My expression remained unchanged, but his words struck closer than I wanted to admit.“What about it?”“Don't play games with me, Lucian. I've watched you long enough to know when something has your attention. Lately, that something appears to be my stepdaughter.”I walked toward the window.“Nyla and I argue. That's hardly a scandal.”“Then explai

LUCIAN’S POVBy Monday morning, I had made two decisions.First, I would stop allowing my father to dictate how I handled my personal life.Second, I would stop expecting Nyla to wait for me.The second decision was harder to accept.I arrived at the office early and summoned Daniel, my assistant.“I need you to clear my schedule this afternoon.”Daniel checked his tablet. “The board meeting?”“Move it to tomorrow.”“And the acquisition review?”“Send the documents to my office.”He hesitated. “Anything else?”“Yes. Find out everything you can about Damon.”Daniel's fingers stopped moving.“Damon who?”“The man Nyla went to dinner with.”He looked at me for a moment before returning to his tablet. “I'll see what I can find.”“Keep it discreet.”“Of course.”When he left, I stared at the documents on my desk.I was behaving like a jealous fool, and I knew it. Nyla had every right to see other people. I had given her no promise, no assurance, nothing she could hold on to when things bec

  • STEPBROTHER BY DAY LOVER BY NIGHT    CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

NYLA’S POV“Saturday, seven o’clock. Don't be late.”I stared at Audrey’s message, smiling as I slipped my phone into my bag.For once, I had something to look forward to that didn't involve Lucian Knight. My date had chosen a restaurant downtown. We had met briefly at a café, exchanged numbers, and started talking. He was charming, attentive, and—most importantly—not complicated. That was enough for me.At least, it should have been.“Nyla!”I turned as Audrey hurried toward me outside the café.“You look suspiciously happy,” she said, narrowing her eyes.“Am I not allowed to be happy?”“Of course. But you usually look like you're planning someone's funeral whenever I ask about your love life.”I laughed. “You're exaggerating.”“Then tell me about this man.”“There isn't much to tell.”“What's his name?”“Damon.”Audrey's eyebrows rose. “Damon? The handsome guy you told me about?”“Yes.”“And he asked you out?”I nodded. She grabbed my arm. “Finally! A man who isn't going to leave yo
