POV: Karol Kensington
"Get behind me!" Ciro yelled in the dark.
His strong arm grabbed my hands and my waist. I quickly ran to his back and held my breath; I was scared to death.
Then, the light came on. The bright white lights of the medical room flashed back on.
I blinked and looked at the door. It wasn't the killer.
It was Mateo. He was dragging a heavy steel desk across the hallway floor to block the door.
"Sorry, boss," Mateo was breathing hard, wiping rain from his face. "The power line was cut. I just put on the generator; I am blocking this wing. No one is getting in."
I let out a breath and stepped away from Ciro. The killer was still out there in the storm, but we are locked inside.
"It is time," I said. My voice was cold and professional. "Get on the table."
Ciro did not argue. He wheeled himself to the therapy table and lifted himself up using his strong arms.
I grabbed a small black box with wires.
"What is that?" Ciro asked, watching me closely.
"A heart rate monitor," I answered. I walked up to him and strapped a black band around his chest. My fingers brushed his skin, and I felt his muscles jump.
"It tracks your stress. If your heart works too hard, your knee swells."
I stepped back and turned on the screen. A green line appeared. Beep... beep... beep... His resting heart rate was normal.
"Let's start with leg lifts," I said, pointing to his right leg. "Lift it slowly. Stop when it hurts. Do not push past the pain."
Ciro set his jaw. He slowly lifted his heavy leg. His face turned pale. I could see the pain in his eyes, but he made no sound.
He lifted it higher.
"Stop," I ordered. "That is enough for day one."
Ciro ignored me. He breathed harder and pushed his leg up another inch. His knee began to shake.
"Stop being stupid!" I yelled.
I pushed his leg back down to the table. He groaned and grabbed my wrists to push me away. But I leaned over him, pinning his leg down.
We were inches apart, both breathing hard.
"You do not need to prove anything to me," I snapped. "I don't pity you. If you tear that ligament again, my life is ruined. You will listen to my pace. Do you understand?"
We stared at each other. His bronze eyes burned into mine.
Slowly, the anger in his eyes changed into a dark, heavy heat.
"Fine, princess. Your pace."
I stepped back, my hands shaking. I grabbed a bottle of warm oil from the cart.
"Your muscles are too stiff," I said, my voice softer. "I need to massage the deep tissue. It will hurt. But it will help."
"Do it," he said, lying back.
I poured the warm oil into my hands, rubbed them together, and placed my hands just above his injured knee.
His skin was burning hot.
I pressed my thumbs deep into his thick thigh muscle. Ciro let out a soft cry. The monitor beeped a little faster. Beep-beep.
"Sorry," I whispered. "I have to press hard."
"Keep going," he said. His voice was very low.
I worked my hands slowly up his thigh, kneading the knots away. The room was quiet, except for the heavy rain and the steady sound of the heart monitor.
I moved my hands higher, working the muscle closer to his hip. The touch was driving me crazy. The pull between us got stronger. I tried to stay focused, but my heart raced.
Suddenly, the machine began to beep loudly.
Beep-beep-beep-beep-beep!
I jumped and looked at the screen. His heart rate was shooting up.
I pulled my hands away in panic and looked at his face.
"Ciro? Does it hurt?" I asked quickly, leaning over him. "Should I stop?"
Ciro was not looking at his knee. He was looking right at me.
His chest rose and fell heavily. The arrogant mask was gone, leaving raw hunger in his eyes.
"It's not pain, Karol," he whispered, his voice thick.
Before I could pull away, his massive hand grabbed my waist. He pulled my hand right back down, pressing my palm firmly against his bare, hot thigh.
The monitor screamed a warning as his heart rate spiked even higher from my touch.
"Ciro," I breathed, my own heart hammering.
He pulled my hand slowly up his leg. "Don't stop, doctor."
I couldn't move. I was trapped in his gaze. The fire between us was about to explode.
But right then, the heavy steel door scraped violently across the floor.
Someone was pushing the door open.
POV: KarolSomeone in the hallway was pushing the door open. They were very strong.Ciro moved fast. The deep, burning heat in his eyes turned cold. He dropped my hand, grabbed my waist, and pulled me hard behind his back."Stay behind me," he ordered. His voice was firm. The heart monitor on his chest beeped fast and loud. But Ciro did not look scared. He looked ready to kill. He sat up, ignoring his bad knee. He grabbed a heavy metal tray filled with massage oils and tools. The space in the doorway grew wider. A black leather glove pushed the heavy desk away like it was nothing. Then, a man stepped into the room.He wore a dark, wet raincoat and a black mask. Rainwater dripped onto the clean floor. He held a black gun with a long silencer in his right hand.I stopped breathing. The man pointed the gun straight at Ciro’s chest. Before the killer could shoot, Ciro yelled and threw the metal tray with all his might. It hit the man right in the face. Glass bottles broke. Warm oil splash

Setting the BoundariesPOV: Karol Kensington"Lock down every single door in this house right now!" Ciro roared."I already did, boss," Mateo said quickly. He wiped the blood off his hand with a white towel. "The storm shutters are down. The heavy steel doors are locked. But the cameras are useless in this heavy rain. We are totally blind outside.""Then we wait for him to try and get in," Ciro ordered. "Put guards at every window. No one sleeps tonight."Mateo nodded and left. The heavy glass doors slid shut behind him, locking with a loud click.I stood in the middle of the room, shaking. My stomach felt sick. A man had tried to shoot me at the airport, now my old work badge is covered in blood. It was a message. He was here, on the island, and he was hunting me."Karol."Ciro’s voice was softer now. He rolled his wheelchair closer to me. I could see the worry hiding behind his dark, angry eyes. He reached out to grab my shaking hands.I stepped back before he could touch me.If I l
Welcome to Villa AltamiraPOV: Karol KensingtonStay in the car, and keep your head down," Mateo ordered. The rain fell so hard I could barely see. The storm had finally hit the island. The wind howled like an angry animal and shook the car.Mateo and three guards jumped out into the cold rain. They pulled out their guns. Some went inside first to make sure the house was safe. They had to find the stranger from the speed boat.Ten minutes passed. Finally, the huge front doors opened. A guard waved for us to come inside.Ciro opened the car door, with the support of his staff, we ran through the rain, up the stone steps and went inside the house. As heavy doors slammed shut behind, The loud noise of the storm instantly went away.I stopped and stared. Villa Altamira was beautiful, but it was scary. The floors were shiny black stone. The ceilings were very high. One whole wall was made of glass. Through the glass, I could see dark, angry waves crashing against the rocks far below. Every
Descent to the Rosario IslandsPOV: Karol KensingtonA loud gunshot cut through the noise of the plane. Before I could even scream, a big hand grabbed my sweater. Mateo pulled me down to the floor. His huge body covered mine completely. He hid me from the open door to keep me safe."Go! Go! Go!" He yelled.Outside, I heard two more loud pops. Mateo was shooting back. A second later, everyone was inside the plane, and the pilot hit a big red button on the wall. The metal stairs folded up, and the heavy door slammed shut. The plane did not wait for us to sit. It shot down the runway and flew straight up into the sky.I lay flat on the floor. My heart was beating so fast I could not breathe. My hands shook badly. Someone had just tried to shoot me."Karol." Ciro’s deep voice was right next to my ear. His hands moved all over my arms and back, checking me. "Are you hurt? Did the bullet hit you?""No," I gasped. I looked up into his wild, hot eyes. "I am okay."Ciro let out a heavy breath.
POV: Karol KensingtonMateo’s voice was low in the quiet room. We had hidden in a safe house since the car chase."We have ten minutes. The sun is coming up, and the reporters will be awake soon. We need to leave now."I didn't get enough sleep last night; I was thinking about a lot of things. I stood up and wore a plain black sweater and jeans that Ciro provided for me. I opened the door."I am ready," I said. My voice sounded flat.Mateo checked the hallway and told me to follow him.We walked down the back stairs and out into the cool morning air. The rain had stopped. The armored SUV was waiting in an alley. The engine was already running.I got into the back seat. This time, I was alone. Ciro had left earlier, according to Mateo, to handle somethings.Mateo hit the gas. We drove onto the empty highway.I rested my head against the window. I watched the sun come up over Medellín. The sky turned a pretty blue behind the dark green mountains. It was the most beautiful city in the wo
