The Night in MedellinKarol Kensington POVThe progress bar on my screen crawled from ninety-eight to ninety-nine percent as my heart was beating so fast. I stared at the blue screen of my laptop, across the darkness of my Medellín apartment. It was past two in the morning. Outside, the city was dead, but the air inside my living room was suffocating; every instinct in me screamed that I should shut the laptop and walk away before it was too late. But I couldn't.My pulse beat wildly.Ninety-nine percent. One more percent,I robbed my burning eyes, exhaling a breath. Every file, every encrypted patient log, and every scrap of chemical analysis from the Kensington Institute’s servers was currently filtering into an untraceable offshore cloud drive. I was stealing from my own family. Or rather, I was salvaging whatever was left of my life before they could completely erase me.My mother had traded me to protect the Kensington business. The realization still felt like a physical blow to

Crossing The LineKarol Kensingston POVHeavy footsteps slammed into the turf marking their territory behind us. Ciro's medics finally made it, shoving me by the shoulder."Back off, Kensington!" their head physician barked, red-faced and panicked. "Get your hands off our player. We’ve got this."I tried to pull it back . It was the smart, safe, legal thing to do. But Ciro regained consciousness and his grip on my wrist tightened until it ached."No," Ciro snarled, his voice a ragged growl of absolute authority. He glared up at his own doctor, his chest heaving. "Don't touch me. Her. She does it.""Ciro, be reasonable, she's with the opposition""I said, back the fuck off!" Ciro roared, the effort draining the last bit of color from his face. He looked back at me, his eyes burning into mine with an intensity that sucked the air right out of my lungs. "Do it, Karol. Cut it."My hands were shaking for a second. Then the training took over. With his doctors watching in stunned, furious s

The Boardroom PanicKarol Kensingston POVThe boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Kensington Institute was always freezing at sixty-four degrees. My mother swore it kept the executives sharp. Sitting at the end of the long glass table today, it felt like a morgue. My knees are still pounding with a strong and steady pain, swelling, and a bruised purple knee from where I'd hit the turf twelve hours ago. I hadn't slept, and I hadn't even washed off the smell of dirt; the ghost of Ciro's blood is still stuck to my skin.On the giant screen behind us, sports channels looped the disaster over and over. The brutal tackle. Ciro hitting the dirt. And then, the ultimate corporate sin: me, wearing the Kensington crest, sprinting across the grass to touch our biggest rival's star player, the heir of our greatest rival.Esperanza Kensington stood at the head of the table. She wore a sharp white blazer, her silver hair pulled back so tight it looked painful. She didn't scream. My mother never ra

POV: Karol KensingtonThe hospital room was terribly quiet.I looked down at the burned, melted piece of Ciro’s knee brace. I tried to make sense of it. Someone in my own family had tried to destroy this man’s life. The proof was right here. It was horrifying, but I could not let myself panic. Not right now. Not in front of him.I took a slow, deep breath and squeezed my shaking hands together."Your heart is beating too fast, Mr. Restrepo," I said. My voice was flat. I walked over to the glowing machines next to his bed, turning my back to his large frame on purpose. "Because of your torn knee and your upcoming surgery, you need to stay calm. Stress will only make the swelling worse.""Acting like a cold doctor," Ciro said. He sounded amused. "That is your plan? I didn't turn around. I checked his IV bag. My fingers moved quickly and perfectly, like a robot."You are their prize horse, Karol," Ciro said. His voice got lower and much more dangerous. "They show you off in your clean w

POV: Karol Kensington"We are totally out of supplies, Ms. Kensington. And the delivery truck never came." My assistant said as she stood in the doorway of my office. I rubbed my tired eyes. "What do you mean the truck never came? I ordered a double supply from our medical supplier a few days ago. It was supposed to arrive by plane yesterday.""I called the shipping port," Sofia said, looking frustrated. "They said all cargo boxes going to the Kensington Institute are locked. They will not let our supplies off the ships."I grabbed my phone and dialed our main medical supplier. A man answered on the second ring."This is Karol Kensington," I said, trying to keep my voice strong. "Why are my supplies stuck at the port?""I am sorry, Ms. Kensington," the man said. He sounded very nervous. "We cannot send your items. The port authority blocked your account. All the shipping boats, the delivery trucks, the storage spaces... they are all owned by the Restrepo Conglomerate. Mr. Ciro Restre
