Luca’s POV

My jaw tightened until I felt the muscle twitch. Lucious Morreno. Of course it was him. The name tasted bitter on my tongue, like poison I had swallowed too many times but never spat out. Slimy old bastard. I had kept him close for one reason only—because he had been an old friend of my father’s. A relic from a past I should have buried with my father himself. A snake who knew how to slither in the dark and hide in the cracks of my world. He was nothing more than a rotting shadow. Just like my father had been.

And then there was his daughter, Cecelia. Pretty face, painted lips, long legs. A quick tongue, soft body, and eyes that always tried to see more than they should. I used her when I wanted to burn away stress. Nothing more. Nothing less. She meant nothing to me, and she knew it. But her father… her father had crossed the line. He had made a mistake so big, it sealed his fate before I even spoke it out loud. The kind of mistake no one survived.

I let the silence sit he

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 138

Dahlia’s POVWhen I went downstairs, Liam was already waiting by the door. He straightened when he saw me and gave a polite nod.“Good afternoon, Mrs. Romano,” he said.“Hi, Liam,” I replied, offering a small smile. “How are you doing?”“I’m good,” he said. “You ready to go?”“Yes,” I answered, even though my stomach twisted as I said it.He led me outside where a black SUV was parked, shining under the afternoon sun. He opened the back door for me, and I slid inside, smoothing my dress over my knees. Once he got into the driver’s seat, I gave him the address of the café I had sent to Denise earlier. The car pulled away from the mansion, and I stared out the window, barely noticing the passing streets. My thoughts were loud.I hadn’t seen Denise since the night she ran away. The night she left me behind

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 137

Dahlia’s POVI laughed quietly. “Already?”“Yes,” he said immediately, like there was no other answer. My chest warmed. “I miss you too.”I sat down on the bed and pulled the blanket around myself. “How are things going over there?”“I’m handling it,” he replied. “Everything is under control. You don’t need to worry, my beautiful wife.”I smiled at the words, feeling comforted just hearing his voice. “I know.”Then I heard someone call his name in the background. Luca turned his head slightly, listening, his attention being pulled away.“I have to go,” he said, looking back at me. “But I’ll call you later.”“I know,” I said softly. “Go take care of things. We’ll talk later.”He smiled then. That slow, private smile that always made my heart skip. “Be good,” he said.“I will.”“Goodbye, princess.”“Goodbye.”The call ended, and the room felt too quiet afterward. I stared at my phone for a long moment before placing it beside me. My hand drifted back to my stomach again, my fingers curl

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 136

Dahlia’s POVLuca left for Florida that night.I stood by the window and watched his car disappear down the long driveway, the headlights fading until there was nothing left but darkness and silence. The house felt too big after that. Too quiet. Like it was holding its breath without him in it.He called me when he landed. I was already curled up in bed, clutching my phone like it was the only thing keeping me steady. Hearing his voice helped. Just knowing he was safe, at least for now.“I’m here,” he said. “I landed safely.”I let out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding. “Okay,” I whispered. “Call me when you can.”“I will,” he promised. “Go to sleep, princess.”I didn’t fall asleep right away. I stared at the ceiling for a long time, my mind full of thoughts I didn’t want. Warehouses. Guns. Blood. Luca in danger. Eventually, exhaustion pulled me under, and sleep came in pieces, light and restless. The next morning, it hit me out of nowhere.I woke up with my stomach twisting

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 135

Luca’s POVI was sitting at my desk, the room quiet except for the soft hum of the air conditioner and the sound of paper shifting beneath my fingers. I had been going through documents for over an hour, signing here, rereading there, correcting numbers that didn’t sit right with me. Work usually grounded me. It gave me something solid to hold onto. Control. Focus. But that day, my mind kept drifting.I checked the time again. Dahlia had gone out earlier. She said she was visiting her parents. I trusted her, but a small part of me still felt uneasy. Old habits. Old instincts. You don’t survive my world without them.My phone rang suddenly, loud in the quiet office.I looked at the screen.Dante.I answered immediately. “Talk.”His voice came through sharp and tense. Not rushed, but tight enough that I knew this wasn’t a small issue. “We’ve got a situation.”I leaned back in my chair, already bracing myself. “Go on.”“Two of our warehouses in Florida were attacked.”My fingers stilled

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 134

Dahlia’s POVShe flinched like I’d slapped her, and for a moment I felt guilty. Then I remembered all the nights I cried alone in my room, sketchbook hidden under my bed because I was told it was pointless. I remembered standing in the corner while Denise was praised, defended, protected.“I loved painting,” I continued, my voice trembling. “It was the one thing that made me feel like I mattered. And when you told me to stop… it felt like you were telling me I didn’t matter.”My mum covered her mouth with her hand, tears finally spilling over. “I’m sorry,” she whispered again. “I truly am.”I nodded, but the hurt didn’t magically disappear. Apologies didn’t erase years of feeling invisible. She reached across the table and took my hand. Her grip was warm, familiar. “You look happy now,” she said carefully. “Are you? With Luca?”That question caught me off guard.I thought of him. His voice. His hands. The way he looked at me like I was something precious, not something second-best.“Y

  • SUBSTITUTE BRIDE FOR THE MAFIA DON   CHAPTER 133

Dahlia’s POVThe next morning, after Luca left for work, the house felt quieter than usual. Too quiet. I got dressed slowly, like my body was moving but my mind was somewhere else. I picked a simple outfit—nothing too flashy. Just jeans, a soft top, and flats. I took my gun like Luca asked and tucked it away in my bag. I didn’t like the weight of it there, but it also made me feel… grounded. Like I wasn’t completely alone.I went down to the garage and stared at the Lamborghini for a moment before getting in. The car was beautiful, powerful, expensive. Sometimes it still felt strange that this was my life now. That I was Luca Romano’s wife. That this was normal for me.As I started the engine, my chest felt tight.I didn’t know how my parents would react to seeing me. It had been so long. Too long. Since the wedding, there had been silence. I understood that Luca had changed my phone and they didn’t have my new number—but phones weren’t the only way to reach someone. They hadn’t tried
