The minutes dragged like hours. Every tick of the clock made me more restless. My ears caught every sound outside the room footsteps, murmured voices, the squeak of a trolley wheel. Each noise twisted in my stomach like a warning.

Finally, I stood and smoothed my clothes. “Let’s get downstairs before the driver arrives,” I said, my voice low but firm. “I don’t want us trapped here when he gets here.”

Darius shifted uncomfortably, his bandaged leg stiff. He gritted his teeth and leaned on me as he stood. He was heavier than I remembered, or maybe my body was simply too tense with fear to carry him easily. Still, I tightened my arm around him, refusing to let him falter.

I slung the bag across my shoulder and opened the door. The hallway stretched ahead, pale and sterile, yet it felt like walking through enemy territory.

“Easy,” I whispered as he limped beside me.

The fluorescent lights buzzed above, flickering faintly. My eyes scanned every corner, every shadow. Twice, I thought I saw

Jenna’s breath caught in her throat. The sight of the man before her was like ice slashing through her veins. Her eyes gleamed with malicious delight at her fear.“Well, well,” he sneered, stepping closer. “I didn’t expect to find you here. How lucky for me.”Her mind screamed at her to move, to run, to do anything but stand there frozen. But her body betrayed her, locked in terror. Her pulse thundered so loudly she was sure he could hear it.The officers nearby turned, startled by the intrusion, but the criminal moved faster. With a flash of steel, he pulled a weapon from his jacket, waving it at anyone who dared approach.“Back off!” he roared, his voice cutting through the chaos of the station. “This girl belongs to me.”Jenna’s knees trembled. This can’t be real. Not here. Not in front of the police. Yet the danger was undeniable. The nightmare she thought she’d left outside had walked straight into her refuge.Darius, miles away, paced restlessly in the hospital corridor. His tho

Darius’s eyes glistened with something Jenna had never seen before. His gaze was fixed, almost burning, as he leaned closer to Betty.“Who is coming for us?” he asked, his voice tight, trembling between fear and anticipation.Betty spoke, her words cutting through the quiet air of the room like a blade. Whatever she said left everyone stunned.Jenna felt her chest tighten. A storm swirled inside her as she turned her head sharply toward Darius. To her disbelief, his whole face darkened with worry not for her, not even for their shared struggles but for Betty. Why? Jenna thought bitterly. Why is he more worried about my sister than about me?And then it happened. Right there in front of her, without hesitation, he called Betty his love. The words struck Jenna like a cruel slap. She froze, her body refusing to move as her heart tried to understand what her ears had just heard.“My love?” she whispered under her breath, though no one heard. How can he call her that? Were they married bef

Darius’s shout shook the room like thunder. He shoved his chair back, his hands gripping his hair as though trying to tear the truth out of his skull.“Her memory? What the hell do you mean she lost her memory?!” His voice cracked with rage and disbelief.Jenna flinched. She had prepared for this moment, but the reality of it still pierced her chest. “Honey, please, calm down. The doctors said”“Don’t honey me, Jenna!” he snapped, slamming his hand against the table so hard the plates rattled. His eyes were wild, glossy with pain he couldn’t contain. “You should have told me earlier. You let me come all this way, sit down to eat, and only now you tell me my Betty doesn’t even know who she is anymore?”Tears spilled freely down Jenna’s cheeks. She wanted to run, but she forced herself to stay. “I didn’t know how to tell you. You were barely strong enough to leave the hospital yourself. I couldn’t crush you with that news when you were still recovering.”Darius paced the room, chest hea

The car sped through the evening streets, headlights slicing through the dim orange glow of the sinking sun. Darius leaned forward, his voice firm as he gave the driver quick instructions.“Take this short cut. We need to get out of this city fast and head into ours,” he said, his tone carrying both urgency and exhaustion. The driver nodded, saying nothing. His hands gripped the steering wheel tighter as he followed the directions. Jenna sat quietly beside Darius, her heart racing faster than the vehicle itself. Her mind was heavy with thoughts of Betty lying in the hospital bed, the danger that seemed to follow them, and the secret she was still holding back from her husband.Their plan was simple, at least on the surface. They would first stop at Darius’s mansion so he could bathe and change into fresh clothes. Then, they’d head straight to the hospital where Betty was waiting. The plan had been Jenna’s idea; she knew her sister needed them, but she also knew Darius couldn’t face Be

  • SURROGATE FOR MY SISTER'S HUSBAND    Chapter 26: THE STRANGER CAME FOR ME!

Morning sunlight filtered weakly through the dusty hospital blinds, streaking the floor with pale gold. The sterile smell of antiseptic clung to my skin, mixed with the faint scent of sweat and fear. I had spent the morning whispering soft words to Darius, brushing his hair back from his forehead, doing everything I could to keep his spirits up. But beneath my smiles and gentle touches, my heart thudded like a drum. He didn’t yet know the truth about last night's shadows, the messages, the woman.I had to get him out. I had to get us both out. This hospital was no longer safe, not for another night.Darius sat propped up on the hospital bed, his face lit with a calm happiness I hadn’t seen in a while. Maybe it was because of the night we’d just had the intimacy we’d shared, the rawness of reconnecting after so long apart. It had felt strange but familiar, a reminder of what we once were. For a brief moment, it had even been fun. But the morning light didn’t erase the danger lurking j
