Chapter 2

Author: H.I.T.
"Leon? Leon! You're up! What are you standing there for?" An urgent voice rang in my ear.

My eyes flew open. The harsh spotlight stung until tears welled in my eyes.

I stood in front of a huge wooden door with intricate carvings, wearing a crisp black suit, with the groom's corsage pinned to my chest.

Beside me, my best friend Geoff shoved me nervously. "The emcee is already calling your name! Hurry up and go in!"

I looked down at my completely uninjured hands. Then, I looked around and saw that I was surrounded by flowers, a red carpet, and balloons.

This was... where my wedding had taken place.

Had I regressed? Had I returned to the moment when I exchanged vows with Sophia? Joy surged inside of me, and I pinched Geoff hard on the arm.

"Holy… What was that for?!" Geoff scowled in pain.

"Did it hurt?" I asked.

"Of course it hurts! That's going to leave a bruise!" Geoff growled.

It was real…

This time, everything was real!

The doors slowly opened, and the wedding officially began as the music played.

At the end of the red carpet, Sophia stood in the mermaid wedding dress we had spent three months choosing together. She held Danny's arm and looked at me with tears in her eyes and a smile on her lips.

She was still here!

She had not disappeared!

I stopped caring about the ceremony as I stumbled toward her, moving so fast I nearly tripped over the carpet, drawing good-natured laughter from the guests. I yanked her into my arms and held her so tightly it felt like I could pull her into my bones.

"What's wrong?" Startled by my loss of control, Sophia whispered in my ear, "Everyone's watching, silly."

The warmth of her body. The familiar scent of her perfume…

"Don't leave me. Please, don't disappear…" I said, trembling.

To keep the tragedy from happening again, I spent every minute after that on edge. When we exchanged rings, I made sure the photographer took close-ups. I recorded a video, posted it to my social media, and sent it to everyone I knew.

During the toasts, I dragged Sophia into photos with every single guest and forced Geoff to face the camera and say, "Today is Leon and Sophia's wedding. I'm here. I saw it happen!"

Geoff thought I was acting strange, but he still went along with it.

Like a paranoid lunatic, I frantically collected proof that Sophia existed. Videos, recordings, photos, fingerprints, even a lock of her hair that I secretly cut and hid in my inner jacket pocket.

I refused to believe the world could fool me again!

Later that night, the noise finally faded, and we returned to that same suite.

I stared at Sophia. I did not even dare blink, terrified she would vanish the moment I closed my eyes.

"Honey, go take a shower. You smell like alcohol all over," Sophia said as she nudged me.

"No. I'll sit here and watch you," I said.

"Why are you so clingy today?" She smiled and went to remove her makeup.

The moment she turned and walked into the bathroom, that strange tightness struck my chest again.

Then, the bathroom door closed.

Next, the sound of the water running suddenly stopped.

Silence.

Dead silence.

I rushed over and pulled at the door. It was locked.

"Sophia? Honey?" I cried out.

No one answered.

I rammed the door in a craze, my shoulder swelling from the impact before I finally rammed it open.

The bathroom was empty.

There was no water in the bathtub, no steam on the mirror, and Sophia, who had just been removing her makeup seconds ago, had vanished into thin air.

Even worse, the lock of hair in my pocket was gone.

With shaking hands, I took out my phone and opened my social media.

The post I had just uploaded was still there, but in every photo that should have shown the two of us together, only I remained, smiling stupidly at the air and embracing emptiness. In the video, I exchanged rings with empty air and kissed it with deep affection.

The comments were all from my friends.

"Leon, have you been under too much stress lately? What kind of performance art is this?"

"Is this the air bride you wanted to marry?"

"Bro, stop scaring us in the middle of the night."

It had happened again.

That suffocating despair drowned me.

"…mez? Mr. Gomez?" A gentle voice called beside my ear. I slowly opened my eyes. There was no fire, no monster, no collapsed door. I was lying in a hospital bed. Sunlight showered through the curtains and onto the blanket, warm and soft. Sophia was sitting by the bed, peeling an apple. When she saw me wake up, she cried out in surprise, "Doctor! He's awake!" I sat up abruptly, drenched in cold sweat. Then, I grabbed Sophia's wrist with so much force that I frightened her. "What... year is it now?" Sophia winced from my grip, but she still touched my forehead gently. "Leon, did the crash confuse you that much? It's 2026." 2026? I froze. Not 2017? Not 2025 either? "How long was I unconscious?" I asked. "A full year." Sophia's eyes were red. "Ever since the car accident after our wedding, you've been unconscious. The doctors even said you might stay in a coma forever." The wedding… The car crash… My memories began to return. I remembered. The wedding of 202

"Leon! Open the door! I know it's you!" The monster outside the door roared and wailed. "You thief! You stole my time… My body… and now you want to steal my wife!" The other me had gone insane... Completely insane… He could not tell the past from the future at all. He only knew he had to find Sophia. Something punched a hole through the security door, and a blood-covered hand reached in, searching wildly for the lock. There was a wedding ring on that hand. That… That was the wedding ring I had lost back in 2025! I rushed forward and swung the bat down on the hand. "Get out of here! The person you're looking for isn't here!" The other me shrieked, followed by even more frenzied impacts on the door. The entire security door trembled, and the doorframe began to warp. Suddenly, the bedroom door opened. Sophia came out, trembling. She raised her phone with the flashlight on. "Leon... Who's outside? Why does his voice sound... Exactly like yours?" It was over. The lock sn

The countdown in the mirror was still ticking. I forced myself to stay calm and returned to the table. I ended dinner with Sophia in a hurry and insisted on driving her home. "Leon, are you really alright? You look dreadful." When she got out of the car, Sophia caught me by my sleeve. "I'm fine. Get some rest," I said to her. I could not stay any longer, and I was terrified the version of me with the knife would suddenly appear. After I watched the light in Sophia's apartment turn on, I turned the car around and sped toward the chemical plant in Eastville. If what Geoff said was true, that other me must have come from 2025. If he had a physical body, that meant whatever laws governing time travel were far more complicated than I had imagined. But… I could not let that other me ruin what I had built, and I definitely could not let Victor find him. Halfway there, rain came pouring down. The chemical plant in Eastville was abandoned on the surface, but only the underground

  • Sacrifice Me to Save You   Chapter 6

Sophia and I were having dinner in a private room at a restaurant. The atmosphere was good, and Snowy was sleeping soundly in the pet carrier. Sophia had drunk a little red wine, and her cheeks were slightly red. She was telling me all kinds of funny stories from college. Just as she burst out laughing, my vision blurred. It was like… Interference on an old television due to a bad signal. Harsh static and distortion rippled across everything I saw. In that instant, Sophia's face changed. It was no longer young and rosy, but pale and lifeless. A shocking red line stretched across her neck, as if something sharp had tightened around it. "Leon? What's wrong?" Sophia called out to me, anxious. I shook my head hard, and the hallucination disappeared. Sophia was still looking at me worriedly, and the red mark on her neck was no longer there. "Nothing... Maybe I've been working too hard lately." I forced a smile, but my palms were covered in cold sweat. The image was… Too real.

  • Sacrifice Me to Save You   Chapter 5

Once I had given our relationship a new beginning, the next thing waiting for me was a brutal war within my family. In my previous life, Victor had been able to crush me under his heel because in 2018, he used that illegal laboratory's "biochip" project to obtain a huge sum of foreign investment, then used it to force our father out at a board meeting. But now, it was still 2017. That project was very capital-intensive, and Victor was going to embezzle public funds from a subsidiary to meet the laboratory's funding goal. That gave me the critical leverage I needed. On Monday morning, I wore the custom suit I had only worn for my wedding and walked straight into the top-floor conference room of the Gomez Group. When I pushed the door open, Victor was selling the directors a grand vision, and the slide on the screen was for the biotech project named Titan. When Victor saw me enter, he frowned, and a hint of disdain appeared in his eyes. "Leon, this is an extended board meet

  • Sacrifice Me to Save You   Chapter 4

I stopped making a scene and calmly accepted the story given to me that I had lost control because "I was drunk". I went home and settled back into 2017. But the first thing I did was to find my half-brother, whom I shared the same father with, Victor Gomez. In my previous life, I had given up my right to inherit the family business for Sophia. Victor had benefited the most. But one thing had always bothered me. Before my regression, why had he been toying with Sophia's wedding ring the last time I saw him? At the time, I thought I must have made a mistake or that he had picked it up. Now, the memory chilled me. I hired a private investigator to look into Victor's movements. As expected, Victor was frequently in touch with an illegal underground laboratory in 2017. The laboratory was researching "quantum consciousness transfer" and "time regression". I understood everything then. This had never been an accidental trip through time. Victor was behind it. On that wedd
