Chapter 3

作者: Peach Iced Tea
"You're right!" Mom exclaimed. "Cam did so well for his SAT. We definitely have to celebrate!"

Mom, Cassandra, and Rebecca gathered around Camden and began chattering away about the celebratory banquet. Rebecca even reflexively shoved me aside just so she could stand closer to Camden.

I lost my balance and knocked my head against the corner of the coffee table. A loud thump rang through the air upon impact, but nobody paid any attention to it.

A huge bump swelled up on my forehead, but I didn't make a sound. I quietly got back up on my feet and left the house.

It was pointless for me to tell them that I was injured because they wouldn't care in the slightest. Besides, I still had to go to my part-time job to earn the money that I needed to pay for my college fees.

I changed into my uniform after I arrived at the karaoke bar. I then entered one of the rooms and got ready to promote the alcohol that was for sale.

Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice.

The door swung open.

Camden stared at me in surprise before calling out, "Clay?"

I froze in place.

Mom, Cassandra, and Rebecca turned to look at me in unison.

A steely expression appeared on Mom's face as she studied that uniform that I was wearing.

"Do you want to anger me to death, Clay?" she demanded. "I know you scored zero points for your SAT, but didn't we agree that you'd just retake the exams next year? You're so smart. Don't tell me that you're planning to work as a waiter for the rest of your life?"

"Are you trying to ruin your life?" Cassandra added with a frown.

Rebecca grabbed my hand and began dragging me out of the establishment. "Let's go home right now and start studying."

As I looked at them, I couldn't help but feel how ridiculous the entire situation was.

They were the ones who kept wanting to drag me down. Although they had achieved their goal, they were also the ones who were unhappy with the current situation.

Mom and the others kept me trapped in my room for the next few days, keeping a close eye on me as I studied.

Although it was rare for them to spend so much time by my side, I only felt annoyed by their constant presence.

"Have you prepared my suit, Mom?" Camden asked. "It's my big day today!"

Mom approached him with a gift box, saying, "I specially had this suit tailor-made for you, Cam. It cost over 2,000 dollars!"

"This is my present for you, Cam," Cassandra said while bringing out a velvet box. "Cufflinks that cost 500 dollars."

Rebecca's present was no less impressive. "Take a look at my present! I got Mom to buy this branded watch for you. It cost over 50 thousand dollars!"

Camden giddily accepted all the gifts. He looked like a prince after he put everything on. He slipped into the luxury car that they had prepared and was escorted to the hotel.

Meanwhile, I was forgotten and left behind in my room.

A long time passed before I received a message.

"Come over to the hotel by yourself, Clay."

I did as I was told. After all, I was still waiting for the show to start for this very important day.

I was sweating buckets when I finally made it to the hotel. My drenched shirt stuck to my back.

Mom frowned when she saw me, asking, "Why do you look like that? It's Cam's important day today. You look humiliating!"

Humiliating?

I wouldn't have had to walk all the way to the hotel if I had money.

However, I felt no desire to explain myself to her. Besides, they never cared about me from the very beginning.

Cassandra pulled out a waiter's uniform from out of the blue and threw it at me, saying, "Change into this. Don't sit at the main table later. Find a far corner in the hall and just stay there. Don't want you ruining Cam's celebratory banquet."

Everyone approached Mom and congratulated her on giving birth to such an outstanding son once the banquet began.

Suddenly, the sounds of a commotion came from the doors.

The guests began to discuss among themselves.

"Oh, my God! That's the director of admissions of Holwille University!"

"You're right. And that's the director of admissions of Basillian University!"

"Camden has really made a name for himself. The director of admissions of Galewin University is here too!"

Camden looked at Mom and the others with a gleeful expression upon hearing the guests' words.

"I told you I did really well for the SAT this time!" he exclaimed. "I'm absolutely sure I'm going to be named the country's top scorer too!"

Rebecca's parents held his hands with ecstatic expressions.

"You've really made a name for yourself, Cam. Rebecca will have a companion once you enroll in Holwille University."

Rebecca's parents had said the same words to me in the past.

The directors of admission of Holwille University, Basillian University, and Galewin University rushed toward Camden.

"Pick my college, Mr. Clayton Silva!" they exclaimed in unison. "I'll give you the best treatment if you do!"

It was bright and sunny the day I arrived at Galewin University. Sunlight streamed through the gaps between the clouds, making the campus' cobblestone path glitter like shattered gold.I pulled my suitcase behind me and stood at the college entrance. I tilted my head back to look at the sky. It was very blue, and it was very clear. My phone was constantly vibrating in my pocket during my journey to Galewin University. Mom, Cassandra, and Rebecca were the ones who were calling me. Camden also called me a few times.I ignored all their calls. My phone stopped vibrating as much on the third day.It fell completely silent on the 15th day.…Galewin University gave me plenty of money for my scholarship. In fact, I had enough money to cover all my school fees and living expenses.I didn't have to work in a bar anymore. I didn't have to put on a uniform and promote the alcohol that was on sale to the patrons of the bar. I didn't have to stand at the door of the private room and count

"Clay!" Mom shouted. "Please listen to me… I know I was in the wrong now. I've learned my lesson. Please don't abandon me, Clay."She reached out and tried to grab my sleeve, but I swatted her fingers away."Did you ever stop to think about me when you turned off my alarm, Mom?" I asked.Cassandra lunged at me and pulled me into a hug. "It's all my fault, Clay! I was the one who played favorites with Cam. I was a fool and let him pull the wool over my eyes for eight years. "Don't go. I'll buy a house for you in your favorite area. You can enroll in any college you want. I'll handle the money—""That's enough," I said, batting her hands away. "In the past few years, you always told me that you would take care of me if I didn't do well on my tests. But you used all my allowance to make Cam happy instead."I had to work a part-time job just to earn enough money to buy mock test papers. You kept claiming that you were going to take care of me, but did you ever do that?"Cassandra's

"You faked your illness, Cam?" Mom asked."No!" Camden shouted, shaking his head wildly. "Clay's slandering me, Mom!"He rushed to her side and grabbed her hand before continuing, "That recording was made with AI! Clay forged it because he hates me! You have to believe me, Mom.""Let's verify its validity right now," I said. "Let's find a proper hospital so you can take a psychology or psychiatry test. It doesn't matter which hospital. I'll repeat the year with you if it's proven that you're ill.""I won't go," Camden frantically answered.Cassandra frowned. "Why not? Clay will repeat the year with you once you prove that you're ill."Rebecca looked at Camden and said, "Cam… Don't tell me you don't want to take the tests because…"She paused for a moment before continuing, "Did you make everything up?"Camden's mouth fell open as he swept his gaze across Mom's deathly pale face, Cassandra's tense jaw, and Rebecca's hesitant eyes.Someone in the crowd scoffed and said, "There's

"I won't," I said without any hesitation."What did you say?" Mom asked. "Say that again?""I said that I won't," I said."You… Are you just going to stand by and watch Cam die?" Mom asked, looking at me with bloodshot eyes. "Where's your conscience, Clayton Silva? Cam already wants to jump off the building, but you're saying you won't repeat the year with him. Do you want to send him to his death?"Rebecca approached me and held my hand."Stop being difficult, Clay," she said softly. "You even insisted that you weren't going to go to Holwille University. I know you think we played favorites with Cam. I understand why that would upset you. But I also know that you have a kind heart. Repeat the year with Cam, okay?""I said that I won't," I repeated, retracting my hand."Does this family have loose screws in their heads or something?" someone in the crowd mumbled. "Clayton's results are so good. He even won the Oliviad Math Tournament, but he showed up to the banquet in a waite

Mom pointed at the screen that was still showing that I had scored zero points for my SAT."Clayton got zero points! Why would you invite him to join your college? If he got accepted into college even though he submitted blank answer sheets, why wouldn't Camden qualify for a spot then?"The admission directors were rendered speechless by Mom's words. They finally understood what was going on at that moment.Camden was Mom's precious treasure while I meant nothing to her.A displeased look crossed their faces before they said, "Our presidents told us that we're here to invite Mr. Clayton Silva to join our colleges. Is he here? We're looking for him."The corners of my lips curled up into a smile before I stepped forward from my corner."I'm Clayton Silva," I said, approaching the admission directors. The admission directors immediately fixed on a smile when they saw me. They then hurried toward me to greet me.The director of admissions of Holwille University managed to grasp my

The guests couldn't help but discuss among themselves upon seeing the results on the screen."Zero points?""Is this a joke?""Didn't they say Camden was the top scorer just now?"Mom stared at the screen. Her voice was shaking when she stammered, "T-That's impossible. Why did Cam get zero points too?"Cassandra also began to panic. "Y-You're right! There's no way both of them got zero points. Maybe there's something wrong with the system. The admission directors are already here. They must have come all the way here for the top scorer! "Don't worry, Cam. There must be something wrong with the score. There's no way that you got zero points," she said while holding Camden's hand, patting it lightly to comfort him.I leaned against the wall in the corner and quietly watched everything unfold. The corners of my lips curled up into a smile.Mom and the others had no idea that I activated a system on the day that Camden was diagnosed with Sibling Rivalry Disorder. The system allowe
