Chapter 2

Mohini
Adam's POV

The second the doctor drove the needle into me, I saw the pity in her eyes.

After the injection, I gradually lost all feeling in my body and eventually passed out. As my consciousness slipped away, I vaguely heard Diana sigh.

"I'm sorry for doing this, Adam. I swear I'll make it up to you someday."

When I opened my eyes again, she was already asleep beside my bed.

Just then, I got a call from my team leader, Julian Mercier.

"Flynn submitted the exploration data yesterday. Looks like the assignment to Nambara will fall on you… You can serve as the team's chief coordinator over there, but with your arm…"

My grip tightened around the phone as I wiped away my tears. "I'm willing to take up the assignment. I just need your help to erase my identity from the records."

Julian was stunned and asked me why. After all, as far as he knew, Diana had spent six years doting on me as my devoted wife. There was no way I would willingly leave her.

Funnily enough, we had both been fooled.

I forced a smile. "I can make a difference in geology wherever I go. I just want to devote myself to the profession."

Julian was relieved to hear that and immediately agreed to help me revoke my legal identity.

I looked at Diana, sleeping peacefully beside me, and remembered her promise to make it up to me. Unfortunately, I no longer wanted that so-called compensation.

My phone chimed again. This time, Flynn sent me a series of chat screenshots.

"These data were found on Adam's computer. Now that he's disabled, you can use them to finish the project," Diana wrote.

No wonder Flynn had managed to produce the exploration data so efficiently. Diana had handed him everything I had worked on and let him take the credit.

"I absolutely won't let you suffer in Nambara. You can't even wear your nice suits over there. I know how much you care about your appearance," she wrote in another message.

Then Diana sent him photos of several custom-made suits. She had designed every one to match his tastes. Even the cufflinks were embossed with his distinctive silhouette.

I remembered what she had once told me. "If you want new clothes, go shopping with your rich friends. I don't know much about men's fashion."

I had been so deeply in love with her that I never noticed the difference in how she treated us.

Now, I realized that she was willing to do anything—crippling me, destroying my future—just so he could keep wearing his suits.

I dug my nails into my useless arm until tears of bitterness filled my eyes. I cared about my appearance, too.

Then, out of nowhere, Flynn made his social media posts visible to me. They were filled with intimate photos of him and Diana, taken throughout the six years of our marriage.

Every time she told me she had something to take care of at work, she had actually been going to see him. She had even canceled multimillion-dollar deals just to go to concerts with him, where they passionately kissed on the big screen.

Yet when I had happily bought tickets for us, she barely cared to look up. "Concerts are loud and crowded. You should just go by yourself."

It all made sense now. It wasn't that she didn't like going. She just didn't want to go with me. Her feelings were crystal clear. There was no point in forcing a love that didn't exist anymore.

I swallowed my emotions and booked a flight to Nambara.

The following morning, Diana helped me wash up. When she reached my limp right arm, her eyes flickered ever so slightly.

After helping me get dressed, she called several highly trained rehabilitation specialists and spent an entire hour carefully going through every detail to choose the right one.

At that moment, Julian sent me the details of the exploration assignment in Nambara. Diana leaned over and asked, "Nambara? Who's going to Nambara?"

I calmly turned off my phone and smiled. "Julian and I are both relieved that Flynn doesn't have to go to Nambara anymore."

She visibly relaxed, then shrugged, pretending not to care.

Adam's POV"Where's Diana?" Flynn asked.I was just about out of patience. "I have nothing to do with her anymore. Leave me alone."I turned to walk away, but he kept coming after me, backing me toward the edge of a deep excavation pit. He sounded openly defiant."She stopped talking to me after you came to Nambara. How can you say she has nothing to do with you?"I cautiously told him to calm down while inching sideways, trying to create some distance between us. Just as he was about to push me over the edge, Diana rushed in and yanked Flynn away."What the hell are you doing?" she yelled. "As long as I'm around, you're not touching Adam!"The second Flynn saw her, he threw himself into her arms, sobbing dramatically. "I only came to find out where you were. Diana, I've missed you so much…"Since Adam made it clear that he doesn't want you anymore, why can't we just be together? He's not worth it!"Diana shoved him away in disgust and chose to stand on my side. She hurriedly

Adam's POVA bitter, restrained laugh slipped out of Diana. She pointed toward the group inside the private room, where my team members were."You consider these people your friends? I'm your wife. I'm the one who genuinely cares about you!"My wife? How ironic of her to call herself that?Diana looked down on my colleagues, but I had nothing but contempt for her either.I shoved her away, my anger finally boiling over. "You think you're so much better than all of us? Everything you've done makes me sick to my stomach!"With that, I raised my hand and slapped her across the face.It wasn't a particularly hard slap, but it was enough to stun her. Her eyes were red as she stared at me.I had never laid a finger on her. To her, I was always this pathetic man desperate for her love. As long as she didn't shake me off, I would keep following her forever. That was why she never had to worry about losing me. Sadly for her, I wasn't that clingy man anymore. After a long silence, Dian

Adam's POVAfter landing in Nambara, I reached out to the local authorities and spent the next few days settling in. The environment wasn't as harsh as I had imagined. Instead, every corner was filled with wonder. As an exploration geologist, I couldn't wait to throw myself back into work. Even with only one arm, I could still guide the team just as well as before.During dinner, one of my teammates showed me the trending story on his phone. "Captain Henderson, is that you they're talking about in the news back home?"After learning the truth, Diana clutched the diagnosis report and cried her heart out. In that short video, she looked as though she had aged ten years. Maybe she did regret what she had done. She must've realized that if she knew I would lose my reproductive ability, she never would've thought to lay a finger on me. Alas, it was too late.I was disabled, and I could never have children again. No matter how hard she cried, nothing would change.I watched the video

Third-Person POVDiana shoved Flynn away and rubbed her temples, her face flushed with anger. "Who the hell do you think you are? Adam is my husband! He's the only man I want to have a child with!"Flynn couldn't believe his eyes and ears. How did the woman who had once defended him suddenly become so cold?Biting his lip, he put on a wounded expression. "Just admit it, Diana. You love me. If you didn't, you wouldn't have taken my side and mocked Adam with me at the inspection ceremony!"At that, Diana immediately panicked. "What do you mean? Are you telling me that Adam never tried to hurt you?"Without thinking, he blurted out the truth. "How could a cripple possibly hurt me? I just wanted to prove that you loved me—and I was right."She collapsed into her chair.Flynn was right. She should've taken Adam's side. He was too kind a man to have done something like that.Looking back, she realized he had also been injured that day, tears still clinging to the corners of his eyes.

Third-Person POV"We're deeply sorry to hear that your husband has lost his reproductive ability, but are you saying you had no idea this would happen? If you'd known your plan would leave him infertile, would you still have gone through with it?""Now that your husband has gone to Nambara for work, are you willing, as the CEO of Nelson Group, to let him work in such harsh conditions?"The questions kept coming. Before long, the story became the top headline and spread across the internet.Diana no longer had the strength to answer. She couldn't even think straight. For the first time, she contemplated whether she should go looking for Adam.If she found him, how should she even face him? She could barely face herself.Clutching the report, Diana left the venue in a daze. Still holding on to a sliver of hope, she called every friend she could think of. Third-Person POVDiana stared at the box, her heart pounding so hard she could barely breathe. She stepped forward, her brow furrowed. "What did you say? What did Adam find out?"The nurse placed the box on the table and looked at her with contempt. "I heard the conversation in the hospital hallway that day, and so did Mr. Henderson. Honestly, I feel sorry for him for having a wife like you."With one last look of disgust, the nurse turned and walked away.By then, Diana had gone awfully pale. It turned out Adam had found out the truth from the very day of the accident. No wonder he hadn't told her that he had accepted the assignment to Nambara. But life with only one arm would already be difficult for him, let alone working in such harsh conditions. How could he possibly survive in a place like that? That thought sent Diana straight to Julian, her eyes red with panic. "I have to bring Adam back. Please, tell me where he is!"He sighed and shook his head. "The exploration team h
