Chapter 3

Mohini
Adam's POV

"I wonder which poor sucker has to go to a place like Nambara," Diana remarked.

I lowered my eyes. That "poor sucker" was me.

Seeing the gloom on my face, Diana took my hand, her expression turning complicated. "The rehab specialists I hired are some of the best in the field. And you have me, your wife, by your side. You'll get better."

If she hadn't told her friend to inject me with a nerve-numbing drug the second I became stable, I might've believed her.

"By the way, Adam, the project you were in charge of is having its final inspection ceremony. But since you're still recovering, you should stay home."

There was basically no room for discussion.

When we got home, she grabbed a jacket and left. The moment she was out the door, I hailed a cab and followed her.

The inspection ceremony was anything but ordinary. The turnout was far grander than I had expected.

When my colleagues saw me, they began whispering among themselves.

"I've never met an explorer this unlucky. The weather was perfectly fine, and yet a torrential downpour just happened to hit on the exact day he went out on the mission."

"If I were him, I'd quit while I was ahead. Who knows? He might end up causing trouble for the rest of the team someday."

"I feel sorry for Ms. Nelson. She'll have to spend the rest of her life looking after a disabled man. Now that I think about it, she and Flynn are a much better match."

The voices were never-ending.

I followed their gaze. Flynn stood at the center of it all, basking in the praise from everyone around him. The terrain was rough, so Diana had taken off his dress shoes and carried them for him herself.

He was like a pampered houseplant she had carefully tended.

When everyone split off to mingle, Diana helped Flynn into the car so he could rest. "You don't need to feel guilty about taking the credit. Adam can't use the data anymore anyway. As long as we don't tell anyone, it's yours.

"Don't worry. There's no way I'd let you go to Nambara. It can be anybody, but I won't let it be you."

A smug look flashed across Flynn's eyes. He pressed Diana against the car window. "So, how should I repay you for everything you've done for me? Like this… Or this?"

In an instant, her cheeks flushed, and her breathing grew heavier. The heat inside the car rose, fogging up the windows.

Despite fighting to hold herself back, she finally gave in. She grabbed the back of his head and pulled him into a kiss. Whatever was happening inside the car became harder to watch.

I covered my mouth and hid behind a tree, closing my eyes as my heart turned to stone.

This was the place where I had barely survived. It was also where I had lost my reproductive ability. Yet Diana was inside that car, lost in pleasure.

As the ceremony drew to a close, everyone gradually began to leave. I was about to follow the others when a familiar male voice came from behind me.

"Adam, you're the most useless man I've ever met."

Flynn stood in front of me with his arms crossed, his body covered in fresh hickeys.

A bitter smile tugged at the corners of my mouth. In the end, as much as I hated to admit it, he was the one who came out on top.

He kicked my useless arm, his eyes filled with smug satisfaction. "How does it feel to be betrayed by your own wife? So what if you got your wish and married Diana? I'm still the one she can't let go."

He added, "Your woman, your career—they all belong to me now. And you, Adam, are nothing but a cripple!"

Then, he showed me the video from the day of the cloud seeding.

I was trapped beneath the mountain by the landslide, my body covered in wounds. Blood kept flowing from between my legs, washed away by the rain, sealing my fate as a man who would never be able to have children.

At that time, Diana was watching with one arm wrapped around Flynn, the other tilting the umbrella toward him. "Enough watching. You'll catch a cold."

Adam's POV"Where's Diana?" Flynn asked.I was just about out of patience. "I have nothing to do with her anymore. Leave me alone."I turned to walk away, but he kept coming after me, backing me toward the edge of a deep excavation pit. He sounded openly defiant."She stopped talking to me after you came to Nambara. How can you say she has nothing to do with you?"I cautiously told him to calm down while inching sideways, trying to create some distance between us. Just as he was about to push me over the edge, Diana rushed in and yanked Flynn away."What the hell are you doing?" she yelled. "As long as I'm around, you're not touching Adam!"The second Flynn saw her, he threw himself into her arms, sobbing dramatically. "I only came to find out where you were. Diana, I've missed you so much…"Since Adam made it clear that he doesn't want you anymore, why can't we just be together? He's not worth it!"Diana shoved him away in disgust and chose to stand on my side. She hurriedly

Adam's POVA bitter, restrained laugh slipped out of Diana. She pointed toward the group inside the private room, where my team members were."You consider these people your friends? I'm your wife. I'm the one who genuinely cares about you!"My wife? How ironic of her to call herself that?Diana looked down on my colleagues, but I had nothing but contempt for her either.I shoved her away, my anger finally boiling over. "You think you're so much better than all of us? Everything you've done makes me sick to my stomach!"With that, I raised my hand and slapped her across the face.It wasn't a particularly hard slap, but it was enough to stun her. Her eyes were red as she stared at me.I had never laid a finger on her. To her, I was always this pathetic man desperate for her love. As long as she didn't shake me off, I would keep following her forever. That was why she never had to worry about losing me. Sadly for her, I wasn't that clingy man anymore. After a long silence, Dian

Adam's POVAfter landing in Nambara, I reached out to the local authorities and spent the next few days settling in. The environment wasn't as harsh as I had imagined. Instead, every corner was filled with wonder. As an exploration geologist, I couldn't wait to throw myself back into work. Even with only one arm, I could still guide the team just as well as before.During dinner, one of my teammates showed me the trending story on his phone. "Captain Henderson, is that you they're talking about in the news back home?"After learning the truth, Diana clutched the diagnosis report and cried her heart out. In that short video, she looked as though she had aged ten years. Maybe she did regret what she had done. She must've realized that if she knew I would lose my reproductive ability, she never would've thought to lay a finger on me. Alas, it was too late.I was disabled, and I could never have children again. No matter how hard she cried, nothing would change.I watched the video

How did the woman who had once defended him suddenly become so cold?Biting his lip, he put on a wounded expression. "Just admit it, Diana. You love me. If you didn't, you wouldn't have taken my side and mocked Adam with me at the inspection ceremony!"At that, Diana immediately panicked. "What do you mean? Are you telling me that Adam never tried to hurt you?"Without thinking, he blurted out the truth. "How could a cripple possibly hurt me? I just wanted to prove that you loved me—and I was right."She collapsed into her chair.Flynn was right. She should've taken Adam's side. He was too kind a man to have done something like that.Looking back, she realized he had also been injured that day, tears still clinging to the corners of his eyes.

Third-Person POV"We're deeply sorry to hear that your husband has lost his reproductive ability, but are you saying you had no idea this would happen? If you'd known your plan would leave him infertile, would you still have gone through with it?""Now that your husband has gone to Nambara for work, are you willing, as the CEO of Nelson Group, to let him work in such harsh conditions?"The questions kept coming. Before long, the story became the top headline and spread across the internet.Diana no longer had the strength to answer. She couldn't even think straight. For the first time, she contemplated whether she should go looking for Adam.If she found him, how should she even face him? She could barely face herself.Clutching the report, Diana left the venue in a daze. Still holding on to a sliver of hope, she called every friend she could think of. Third-Person POVDiana stared at the box, her heart pounding so hard she could barely breathe. She stepped forward, her brow furrowed. "What did you say? What did Adam find out?"The nurse placed the box on the table and looked at her with contempt. "I heard the conversation in the hospital hallway that day, and so did Mr. Henderson. Honestly, I feel sorry for him for having a wife like you."With one last look of disgust, the nurse turned and walked away.By then, Diana had gone awfully pale. It turned out Adam had found out the truth from the very day of the accident. No wonder he hadn't told her that he had accepted the assignment to Nambara. But life with only one arm would already be difficult for him, let alone working in such harsh conditions. How could he possibly survive in a place like that? That thought sent Diana straight to Julian, her eyes red with panic. "I have to bring Adam back.
