Chapter 4

The next day, while I was in the middle of procuring medical equipment, my phone started ringing off the hook.

I had a pretty good idea of what this was all about, but I didn’t answer the phone. It was not as if I could anyway.

With a multimillion-dollar deal in my hands, I wasn’t at liberty to get involved. Even if I were to take the call, I was an outsider with no right to interfere.

Sarah was a nervous wreck at the hospital.

Aiden rushed to the emergency room the second he got the news.

Sarah looked at him as if he were her only hope.

“Aiden! The drug! Dad started coughing up blood. Only the experimental medication can save his life!”

Aiden squeezed her hand back and held out the pills, his tone gentle and calm.

“Easy there, Sarah. I brought the remaining course of the treatment here as soon as I heard Mr. Townsend was in critical condition.”

A wave of relief washed over Sarah when she saw the medicine.

Her eyes welled up as emotions stirred within her.

“Thank goodness you’re here, Aiden. You always think of everything. I’m honestly lost with you…”

His presence stilled her nerves.

However, she kept glancing at her phone, checking to see whether I had returned her calls.

With the screen only showing her unanswered outgoing calls, disappointment and anger flickered across her eyes.

Just then, the doors to the emergency room burst open, and several nurses wheeled out Terrence, whose face was white.

“Stay strong, Dad!”

Sarah threw herself forward, tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Quick, Sarah. Feed him the drugs.”

Aiden poured the pills out of the bottle and handed them to Sarah.

Nodding profusely, Sarah shoved the pills into Terrence’s mouth.

“Drop that! What are you doing?”

The chief of the emergency medicine department caught on to Sarah’s behavior and stepped in.

“Doctor, this medication is going to save his life!” Sarah explained urgently.

The chief frowned, rage rising within him.

“What do you mean, save his life? The patient is suffering from acute renal failure. You can just shove random pills down his throat.

“Are you trying to get him killed faster?”

Sarah was stunned.

“No, these pills are a miracle drug.

“If it weren’t for the course of treatment, Dad wouldn’t have made it this far.”

Panic nearly pushed the chief to tears. Medical staff could handle difficult families, but dealing with ignorance was the real nightmare.

“Without Dr. Jones, your father wouldn’t have lived to this day!

“Do you actually believe the unapproved experimental drug is helping him?

“I have strong reasons to suspect that these pills are the cause of his sudden deterioration.”

It was as if the rug was pulled from right under her feet.

The chief added. “Aren’t you Mr. Loving’s fiancée? Call him immediately and have him get in touch with Dr. Jones. Dr. Jones is your father’s only hope now.”

Sarah was dumbfounded, her eyes full of disbelief.

“What did you say? Dr. Jones? James brought him here?”
