"You thief!"

The accusation ripped through the humid afternoon air, louder than the traffic, louder than the paparazzi.

Lysander Thorne lunged.

He didn't look like the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. He looked like a man who had watched his net worth evaporate in six hours. His eyes were wild, his hair a mess, and his expensive suit rumpled as if he had slept in his office—which, Vespera knew, he likely had.

"You stole it!" Lysander screamed, ignoring the cameras flashing like strobe lights around him. "The flash drive! The source code! It’s gone!"

He stopped three feet from Vespera, his chest heaving.

Vespera didn't move. She stood perfectly still in her new, razor-sharp black suit. Her hands were tucked casually into her pockets. Her oversized sunglasses hid her eyes, turning her face into an unreadable mask of obsidian and red lipstick.

"I don't know what you're talking about, Lysander," she said. Her voice was calm, pitched perfectly to be picked up by the microphones thrust in her

The sun was setting over Neo-Veridia, painting the skyline in strokes of bruised purple and burnished gold.Vespera stood on the terrace of the new Vane-Hale Headquarters. It was the tallest building in the city, towering over the old Thorne tower like a queen looking down on a pawn. The wind up here was fierce, but Vespera didn't shiver. She wore a coat of soft cashmere, cream-colored and warm. She rested her hands on the polished steel railing and looked down at the streets below.Somewhere down there, cars were moving in gridlock. People were rushing to dinner. Life was happening in all its messy, chaotic glory. And somewhere down there, on a cold, wet intersection five miles away, a ghost was fading.Vespera closed her eyes. She could still remember the sensation of the asphalt. The grit against her cheek. The cold rain soaking through her cheap dress. The sound of Lysander’s engine revving as he drove away, leaving her to die.I died there, she thought. The weak, desperate girl w

One Year Later.Neo-Veridia State Penitentiary. Cell Block D.Scrub. Rinse. Repeat. The rhythm was the only thing that made sense anymore.Lysander Thorne dipped the stiff-bristled brush into the bucket of grey, lukewarm water. The smell of industrial bleach burned his nostrils, but he was used to it. He scrubbed the concrete floor of the cell block corridor, his knees aching against the hard stone. His hands, once manicured and soft from holding nothing heavier than a fountain pen, were now calloused and red. His fingernails were broken."Missed a spot, Thorne," a guard grunted, walking past him. The guard kicked the bucket, splashing dirty water onto Lysander’s orange jumpsuit. "Clean it up. If the Warden sees a smudge, you lose yard time.""Yes, sir," Lysander whispered. He didn't look up. He didn't argue. The arrogance had been beaten out of him months ago.He wiped the spill with a rag.He was tired. He was always tired. The prison was loud—a constant cacophony of shouting, metal

The sirens didn't wail. They chirped—sharp, authoritative bursts of sound that cut through the night air.The courtyard of the Hale Fortress, which had been designed to welcome diplomats and royalty, was now a sea of flashing red and blue lights.Six squad cars were parked on the manicured lawn, their tires digging into the turf.On the terrace, the silence was heavy. The guests—tech giants, politicians, and socialites—stood near the walls, watching the end of the drama unfold with morbid fascination.Oryn and his security team had hauled Lysander and Elara down the main steps to the waiting officers. It wasn't a dignified exit.Elara was screaming. Her zip-tied hands were behind her back, her mismatched, stolen clothes making her look like a frantic scarecrow."It wasn't my idea!" she shrieked, thrashing against the grip of two officers. "He had the gun! I tried to stop him! I’m a victim! Check the hospital records! He hit me!"She was throwing Lysander under the bus, the train, and

The jazz band was playing a smooth, upbeat number. Champagne flutes clinked. Laughter floated in the warm evening air.At the head table, Vespera turned. She looked up into the shadowed face of the waiter standing just three feet away.He wasn't looking at the empty glasses. He was looking right at her.Under the brim of the oversized cap, his eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with madness and exhaustion. His skin was gray, his beard patchy. He looked like a ghost who had crawled out of a crypt."Lysander," Vespera whispered. He grinned. It was a rictus of hate that showed too many teeth."Did you miss me, wifey?" Lysander hissed. His hand came out of the deep pocket of the white jacket. It wasn't holding a bottle opener. It was holding a rusty, cheap .38 caliber revolver. The metal looked dirty against the crisp white of the stolen uniform. He raised the gun, aiming it squarely at Vespera’s chest, right over the intricate crystal bodice of her wedding gown."A toast," Lysander shouted, his

The music began. It wasn't the traditional "Here Comes the Bride." It was a live string quartet playing a haunting, melodic version of Debussy’s Clair de Lune—the song Vespera had once told Cyprian was the only thing that calmed her mind during the nights in the attic. The heavy oak doors of the Hale Fortress’s Great Hall swung open. The guests—three hundred of the world’s most powerful people—stood as one.Vespera stepped onto the aisle runner. The air smelled of heaven. Fifty thousand white orchids lined the walls, but the aisle itself was strewn with white rose petals. Cyprian had remembered. “Orchids are for the show,” he had said. “Roses are for you.”Vespera gripped her bouquet of white peonies. Her hands were trembling, but not from fear. She looked down the long aisle. At the end, standing beneath an arch of interwoven crystal and blooms, was Cyprian. He was wearing a black tuxedo that fit him like a second skin, tailored to accommodate the breadth of his shoulders. His hands

The invitation weighed nearly a pound. It was engraved on a sheet of solid, brushed gold, encased in a sleeve of midnight-blue velvet. It didn't just say "You're invited." It said, "You are witnessing history."The Union of Cyprian Hale & Vespera Vane. The Hale Fortress.Saturday, Sunset. The internet had dubbed it "The Royal Wedding of the Business World."For three days, social media had been in a frenzy. The hashtag #VesperaWedding was trending higher than the national election.@NeoVeridiaNews: Sources confirm that Cyprian Hale has imported 50,000 white orchids from Singapore for the ceremony. The entire floral market is sold out.@GossipGirl: Do you remember her first wedding to Thorne? The one in the backyard with the plastic chairs? Talk about a glow up.@FinanceBro: Vane Strategy stock is up another 12% on the wedding news. She’s monetizing her own romance.
