The crowd parted as the King approached, leaning on his case with Amelia beside him. His gaze was sharp like a knife, as he glared at the woman that asked the guards to throw me out, Yvette.

Then he turned his gaze on everyone and they all shrank back, seemingly afraid of his wrath.

Yvette took a step back, her face as white as a sheet as if she knew she’d crossed the line and I wondered if the King was mad at me or at her.

The king? Wasn’t he away from Sylvia? When did he return? That was the question in everyone’s mouth as they looked at us.

“Savannah, come and stand next to me. I’ll see who dares to lay a finger on you tonight.” He slammed his cane on the ground, his voice tight with anger. My heart swelled as relief washed through me. Oh Goddess, his powerful wrath wasn't directed at me.
