Chapter 1

I pushed my suspicions aside. Forcing a smile onto my face, I exchanged pleasantries with my adopted sister, Peyton Young.

Throughout the drive home, I tried calling my wife, Gwendolyn Shaw, but she never answered.

The moment I returned to the home I hadn't seen in years, I discovered that the giant bedroom I shared with Gwen had been turned into Peyton's walk-in closet.

The room was crammed with all kinds of high heels and designer items that Peyton had bought for herself. Feeling irritated, I rummaged through the mess before I caught sight of the luxury bags I'd given Gwen over the years.

As the strange feeling in my gut grew stronger, I called my father, Jeremy Young.

"Didn't I tell you to give the watch to Gwen? Why is it on Peyton's wrist?" I demanded. "Also, why did you turn me and Gwen's bedroom into a walk-in closet? Where on earth is Gwen sleeping now?"

To my surprise, he started accusing me of making a fuss out of nothing.

"Your sister just borrowed it from Gwen to wear it around for a couple of days. Why are you getting worked up when your wife doesn't have a problem with it?" he snapped.

That watch was a gift that I had carefully picked out for Gwen. On top of that, I even had our names engraved on it. I refused to believe that she would willingly lend it to Peyton.

Before I could press him for an explanation, he brushed me off once again. "I don't really care about where Gwen is sleeping. It's not like I left her out on the street!"

"I just found out two days ago that the general manager position I'd arranged for Gwen had been reassigned to Peyton. Was that your doing?" I asked again, suppressing my anger.

After seeing those strange photos, I had called my company headquarters to ask about the matter. That was when I learned that Gwen had been fired ages ago.

Why was my wife working at a nightclub instead of the company?

I was determined to get to the bottom of this, but by then, my father was clearly losing his patience.

"Your wife was the one who complained that the job was too tiring and insisted on quitting. Lucky for us, Peyton was generous enough to step up and take her place. Instead of interrogating me, why don't you send your sister some gifts to thank her?"

With that, he hung up irritably.

I didn't believe a single word he'd said. If anything, I was convinced that he was taking Peyton's side because he was biased toward her.

My father had doted on Peyton ever since he brought her into our family when she was 18.

He'd always been incredibly strict with me, yet he treated Peyton like a princess. He gave her the best of everything and even assigned her a private driver and bodyguards.

I'd bought into his belief that sons shouldn't be spoiled. So, I'd never had a problem with the preferential treatment she'd received after she'd lost both of her parents.

I was willing to put up with a less comfortable life, but that didn't mean that I was willing to let my wife suffer alongside me.

Before I left the country to establish a branch office overseas, I'd told my father that Gwen was the woman I loved more than anyone in this entire world. Because of that, I'd specifically asked him to make sure that she was treated well.

Back then, he laughed and assured me that the Young family had more than enough money to pamper my wife. As the Young family's daughter-in-law, Gwen would have nothing but an easy life.

Now, it seemed that I couldn't even hold my own father to his word.

After I left the walk-in closet, I realized that every member of the household staff had been replaced by people I didn't recognize.

I grabbed one of the housekeepers and asked hurriedly, "Where is Gwendolyn's room?"

The housekeeper flashed me an awkward look. She stumbled over her words and refused to give me a straight answer.

Growing increasingly anxious, I had no choice but to dig up the phone numbers of our old household staff and call them one by one.

Eventually, I called Thomas Baxton, an old butler who had always treated me like his own grandson. The instant he heard my voice, he burst into tears.

"You're finally home, Mr. Young," he cried. "Now that you're back, Mrs. Young won't have to live in fear anymore…"

Jeremy softened his tone and tried to plead for mercy."No matter what happened, I'm still your father," he cried, "Besides, Peyton saved my life. Do you think you can—"I had no interest in listening to any of his excuses. I hung up before he could finish and blocked his number.Afterward, I went straight to the company and had the PR team issue a statement. The Young family was officially cutting all ties with Jeremy and Peyton Young. I also announced Peyton's dismissal on the spot. At the company-wide meeting, I declared, "Anyone who climbed the ranks by bribing Peyton has one week to resign voluntarily. After that, if I find that anyone is still clinging to their position, I'll have them prosecuted for bribery and corruption. I'll send them over to prison to keep Peyton company."My return was a huge shock to the entire company. Those who had long since grown sick of Peyton's behavior couldn't have been any happier. Many of them even came forward with valuable information,

"I was so terrified that I couldn't even think straight. The only thing I managed to save was our wedding photo. I kept it in the basement, and whenever I felt like I couldn't go on anymore, I'd look at it and remind myself that I had to keep going…" Gwen cried. She wiped away her tears before continuing, "I asked your father to stand up for me. But instead of doing that, he slapped me across the face and said that Peyton was the true lady of the house. According to him, I was just someone that his son had married on a whim."He kept telling me that you didn't love me at all, and that Peyton was only treating me this way because you told her to do so. He even dared me to complain to you. He claimed that you wouldn't do anything about it even if I did."I was furious."How could he make up such lies about me? Did you actually believe him?"Gwen shook her head. "No, but I didn't dare to tell you what was happening either. Every time I complained, they'd only punish and abuse me even

Anyone who offered Peyton bribes or tried to curry favor with her got a promotion. Meanwhile, anyone who opposed her actions or dared to speak against her was fired on the spot. To make matters worse, she refused to offer them any form of severance pay.Her reckless behavior had dragged the company into one lawsuit after another, leaving the legal team scrambling to deal with a never-ending stream of cases.Outside of work, Peyton was just as entitled and obnoxious. Among other things, she'd been caught driving under the influence, speeding, and verbally and physically assaulting the staff at luxury boutiques. She got into trouble incredibly often.Jeremy, on the other hand, was completely bewitched by her.Whenever she got herself into trouble, he'd swoop in and pay off the victim to make the problem disappear. She'd never had to deal with the consequences of her actions, and she became increasingly brazen as a result."Thankfully, you've managed to build a successful career over

Heartbroken, I pulled Gwen tightly into my arms."Don't worry. I'll make sure she suffers ten times more than you did. From now on, no one will ever treat you that way again," I declared.Upon hearing that, Jeremy flew into a fit of rage. "Have you forgotten about your own father now that you have a wife? You're going to be punished for being such a disrespectful son, Theodore Young!" Turning toward Gwen, he screamed, "You little temptress! What kind of spell did you put on my son? How did you make him disrespect his own father?"I covered Gwen's ears and gently reassured her, "Don't be afraid. You didn't do anything wrong. If anything, I should be thanking you."I should've given up on my family a long time ago, but I couldn't bring myself to make that decision. My foolish devotion to my father made me hesitant, and my decision ended up hurting you too."I added, apologetic, "I'm sorry I let you suffer for so long, but I'd also like to thank you for finally forcing me to make u

I glared at Peyton, who was still standing there with an arrogant look on her face, and finally voiced all of my grievances."You spent a tremendous amount of money on Peyton and spoiled her like a princess. I was jealous of her, but I kept telling myself that she was a poor orphan who'd lost both of her parents."It seemed like she was destined to be part of our family. She saved your life, and you brought her home to give her a comfortable life. I thought that you were simply doing a good deed by repaying her for saving you."When Jeremy first brought Peyton home, she was dressed in rags and could barely speak proper Brinnish. She was thin and sickly, but she had delicate features. Her eyes, in particular, looked especially bright and beautiful.Jeremy had told everyone that he'd been involved in a car accident in the countryside, and that Peyton had happened to be nearby. According to him, she had pulled him from the wreckage in time and saved his life. In order to repay her, he

My hands trembled as I clicked on the video. I was only three seconds into the footage before I was overcome with uncontainable anger. No longer caring about being a respectful son, I spun around and slapped my father across the face with all my strength. "You're a disgrace to your own family, Jeremy Young! You're no father of mine!" I roared. My actions left everyone in the room completely stunned. On the phone screen, I finally saw the horrifying truth. In the video, Peyton and Jeremy sat arrogantly on the couch. Looking down at Gwen with disdain, they ordered her around as she knelt at their feet like a lowly dog."You. Fetch me that slipper with your mouth," Peyton ordered.Gwen tried her best to fight back her tears. When she didn't move, Peyton's expression darkened."You're just a dog that belongs to the Young family. How dare you disobey your master?" Peyton snarled.Jeremy, who had one arm around Peyton, casually raised his hand to threaten Gwen. "Are you going to
