Evelyn POV

I stared at it for a moment, debating whether or not to answer. I hadn’t spoken to him for the longest time.

These days, we hardly cross each other at home either. I came in late and left early before anyone was out of bed. Victoria these days seemed quiet. Often, I’ll say I’ll pop into her room and check on her but it never seems to work.

I just had too much on my plate, and the only thing on my mind as soon as I got home was to sleep. There was still a few days left before the end of this month that I would be meeting with the board.

So, I would be twice as busy than I am now.

The call ended and started ringing again. I stared at the screen, wondering why he was still calling for the second time. Eventually, my curiosity got the better of me, and I answered.

“Hello, Damien,” I said, my voice was cool and distant.

“Evelyn,” He said, sounding warm. “I need to talk to you about something important.”

“If this is about increasing your stipend, the answer is no or about giving

Evelyn POVAfter he left, Belle grabbed my arm and practically screamed."Oh my God, Evelyn!" she squealed, bouncing slightly. "I wouldn't blame you one bit for having that reaction. Vincent looked absolutely dashing. The man could make a potato sack look good."I laughed despite myself, shaking my head at Belle's enthusiasm. We were finishing up the last of the packing when there was another knock on the door. When it opened, Gabriel stepped inside, carrying a beautiful bunch of white and yellow daisies. He looked calm, as always, dressed in dark clothes that made him seem both approachable and dangerous at the same time."I apologise for not visiting since the last time," Gabriel said, coming over to me. "How are you feeling? Are you recovering well?""I'm much better," I said, noticing the concern in his expression. "The doctors say I'm healing faster than expected. What about you? How have you been?""Busy," Gabriel said, a slight smile playing at his lips. "But good. More importa

Evelyn POVThe morning light streamed softly through the half-open blinds, painting pale gold lines across the white hospital floor. For the first time since the explosion, I didn’t wake up with any pain. My head still ached faintly, and every movement came with a reminder that I’d survived something that should have killed me, but I was alive. And today, I was going home. The VIP room looked bare as Belle stood by the small table near the window, folding my clothes with utmost care, which was suspicious. From the corner of my eye, I caught her glancing at me every few seconds; her eyes were filled with curiosity.I ignored her, busying myself with getting dressed.I moved slowly, still tender in several places, but determined to get out of this place. Hospitals had a way of making me feel trapped."So," Belle said, holding up one of my blouses with a mischievous grin, "are you going to tell me what's really going on with Vincent Hayes, or are you going to keep pretending you don't kn

Gabriel POVGut feeling. Instinct. Those were the two traits that separated the mafia bosses who lived long from the ones who died young. The strongest ones—the ones with the biggest empires, the most connections, the territories spanning continents—they all eventually died. Either by assassination, betrayal, or sheer bad luck. But the ones who survived? The ones who lived into old age and died in their beds? They were the cowards. The ones who grovelled to the government. The ones who made deals and compromises. And most importantly, the ones who trusted their gut feelings above everything else.I'd survived this long because I listened to my instincts. And right now, my instincts were screaming at me that something was wrong. For two days, I'd been replaying my conversation with Evelyn over and over in my mind. She'd described the man she'd seen—the one with the tattoos on both arms, the one with the pungent, offensive odour. The way he'd passed her as she was entering the cafe. The

Evelyn POVI laughed, despite the pain it caused. "Did you respond?""I ignored them," Grace said. "But I wasn't sure if that was the right call. They're a major firm. Maybe you wanted to hear them out?""No," I said firmly. "They're scammers, Grace. They target struggling companies, offer investment, and then swoop in to buy them out when they're most vulnerable. I would have told them plainly that Bennett Corporation would never partner with them and they should take their misunderstanding elsewhere. You made the right call ignoring them."Grace nodded, looking relieved."There are a few other things," Grace continued. "We've had several inquiries from other real estate developers wanting to collaborate on future projects. The publicity from your recovery—well, not the accident part, but the fact that you survived and immediately got back to business—has made you something of a media darling. People want to work with you."I shook my head in disbelief. "That's incredible.""It reall

Evelyn POVThe VIP ward room was more comfortable than the ICU had been. I could see the city skyline through the large windows. The room was private, decorated in soft blues and greens. There was a comfortable-looking armchair in the corner, a proper bathroom, and the room was well furnished.I got moved from the ICU yesterday evening after the doctor had confirmed I was healing properly and was out of danger. The doctor had come in this morning with good news."You're making excellent progress, Miss Bennett," he'd said, reviewing my chart. "Your vitals are stable. The internal injuries are healing well. We've run all the necessary tests, and everything is looking positive. No internal bleeding or neurological damage. That alone is remarkable, considering the nature of the accident. The burns you sustained are mild and would disappear in no time, plus they’re in hidden parts of your body so that they won’t affect your self-confidence in the meantime.”I’d sustained burns mostly on my

Evelyn POVI'd gotten my coffee and walked back to my car. Just as I settled in the driver’s seat, the same smell that had wafted up to me inside the café suddenly filled my nose. I'd thought it was strange, and I'd wondered if it was just my brain registering the odour from earlier. Then I'd remember turning the key in the ignition. And the world had exploded. The last thing I remembered was the sound. A loud, deafening sound that had seemed to come from everywhere at once and fire. I'd felt heat. And then... nothing.Everything after that was blank."Someone... tried to kill me?" I asked the doctor, my voice shaking."It appears so," the doctor said gently. "The police are investigating. But for now, all that matters is your recovery. You're going to be okay, Evelyn. You're going to be just fine."The doctor said some other things—something about internal injuries, emergency surgery, and monitoring for complications. But I wasn't really listening. My mind was still trying to process
