Chapter 4

Author: Gathered Light
Upon hearing that all-too-familiar voice, Jacklyn felt like she'd been struck by lightning.

She took a deep breath to steady herself, then peeked around the corner.

Her parents, George Stinson and Rebecca Graham, were standing with Penelope.

George was gently holding Penelope's arm. His eyes were filled with a tenderness Jacklyn had never once seen from him.

Rebecca stood beside them on the phone. Her tone was firm, and her eyes were filled with determination as she demanded Eugene divorce Jacklyn and marry Penelope.

Penelope, basking in the attention, rested her hand on her belly with a look of contentment.

In contrast, Jacklyn had no one by her side. She had no one doting on her. She stood alone at the inconspicuous corner, looking forlorn.

"What did you say?" Rebecca's voice suddenly shot up, shrill and furious. Her face flushed red.

"Eugene, Penelope's carrying the future heir of your family! And you still won't divorce Jacklyn? What's so great about her anyway? Penelope is better than her in every possible way! If you feel bad, just give Jacklyn a house!

"I don't care. If you won't marry Penelope, I'll take her straight to the hospital for an abortion! I'd like to see what's so great about that barren woman!"

Rebecca was so angry that her chest heaved with every breath. Veins were bulging at her temples.

George kept a stern expression but still tried to comfort Penelope, saying, "Don't worry, sweetheart. Your mom and I will always have your back. We'll always support you."

Penelope gave a soft smile. Her eyes were fixed on Rebecca. She was much more interested in Eugene's response. If she could become Mrs. Lloyd, she'd walk through life with her head held high.

She didn't know what Eugene said on the other end of the call, but she noticed Rebecca suddenly froze.

"Eugene, y-you heartless bastard! Penelope has been with you for three months! You really don't feel anything for her? Eugene Lloyd!"

The line must've gone dead.

Rebecca shouted into thin air for a while longer before turning helplessly toward Penelope. "Sweetheart, just hold on a little longer. I swear I'll—"

Before she could finish, Penelope's eyes had already gone red. She couldn't accept this.

Eugene had once whispered in her ear, "Penelope, you're far more passionate and open than Jacklyn. If I had met you first, maybe I would have married you instead."

She'd clung to that line like a lifeline. She used every trick in the book, hoping to earn Eugene's attention. She believed that he might have some feelings for her at the very least.

But even now, Eugene still loved Jacklyn.

Today, when she told him her stomach hurt, he had said he'd rush over to see her. Yet, something came up, and he never showed.

What could be more important than their baby? Would he have done the same if Jacklyn were the one pregnant?

The more Penelope thought about it, the angrier she got.

Clenching her fists, she snapped, "That bitch! Jacklyn was just born to be a pain! Why doesn't she just die already? She's standing in my way!"

At her outburst, George and Rebecca looked like their hearts were breaking. They scrambled to comfort her.

Rebecca said, "Hang in there, sweetheart. Once you give birth to the heir of the Lloyd family, Eugene will give you the title you deserve."

"Exactly," George chimed in with a smile. "I'm sure Eugene is tough on the outside but soft on the inside. He'll come around. Don't let your emotions affect the baby."

Their unconditional bias toward Penelope made Jacklyn's heart freeze.

Even though she'd long stopped expecting anything from them, it still hurt to finally admit that her parents didn't love her.

How could it not hurt?

Jacklyn closed her eyes for a moment, trying to calm the ache in her chest.

She was about to turn and walk away.

But then, Penelope suddenly raised her head and looked in her direction. "Jackie?"

George and Rebecca whipped their heads toward the corner at once.

Rebecca reacted the fastest. Hands on her hips, she strutted over and said sarcastically, "Well, look who it is! Mrs. Lloyd herself. Come here!"

She reached out and yanked Jacklyn into the open.

Jacklyn instinctively shielded her stomach.

When she stood in front of the three, George snapped out of his thoughts and said, "Perfect timing. We need to discuss something with you.

"Jacklyn, you've been married to Eugene for three years, yet you still haven't given him a child. In the past, that alone would've been enough to get you thrown out for failing in your duties as a wife! If Eugene weren't such a loyal man, you'd have been cast aside long ago!"

Failing in her duties as a wife?

Jacklyn yanked her arm free from Rebecca's grip and met George's gaze with a look full of sarcasm.

"Dad, unless I'm mistaken, we live in a modern society now. We have doctors to treat a defective brain."

"You…" George's face darkened. He raised his hand to slap Jacklyn.

Jacklyn stepped back, but Penelope had already stopped George. "Dad, don't. Let me talk to Jackie."

Then, turning to Jacklyn, Penelope placed a delicate hand on her belly and smiled sweetly.

"Jackie, don't be mad at Dad. He's just looking out for you. Not having a child has always weighed on Gene's mind. Eventually, it's bound to create distance between you two. You can't keep testing Gene's love for you forever."

Every time she said Gene, it was a deliberate jab.

"That's right," Rebecca chimed in. "I've been there. Listen to me. Instead of clinging to your title, why not let Penelope take your place?"

Then, in a softer voice, she added, "You should know she's carrying Eugene's son. With a baby on the way, her place is secure. We're family, after all. It would be better for Penelope to take your place than for an outsider to do so. And don't worry. We'll make sure you're taken care of."

For once, Rebecca's voice was oddly gentle.

But Jacklyn almost laughed.

Rebecca had never been gentle with her. This fake kindness was all for Penelope's sake.

She didn't even bother asking why she was standing in the hospital corridor.

One question had always haunted Jacklyn. Was she even really Rebecca's daughter? Did she not carry the same blood?

Because she was the older sister, the one who never made a fuss, she was expected to always accommodate Penelope.

In the past, Jacklyn would have argued with Rebecca. After all, she had Eugene's favoritism. But now, she suddenly felt tired.

She had let go. Why should she keep chasing things that were never hers to begin with?

She no longer desired Rebecca's and George's affection. She didn't want Eugene's love, either. She didn't want anything anymore.

Jacklyn smiled. She hadn't felt this light in ages.

"What are you smiling at?" George snapped with a frown. "Don't tell me you're reluctant to give up your title. We've said everything we can. Don't push it! Jacklyn, you're really shameless, hogging a spot you don't deserve. You—"

Before he could finish, Jacklyn cut him off, saying, "I'm not interested in being Mrs. Lloyd. If Penelope wants the title so badly, she can take it."

Her words hit like a thunderclap.

Suddenly, something hit the ground at the end of the hallway.

Jacklyn looked up and locked eyes with Eugene.

"That damn bitch got us all beaten to hell!" the thugs exclaimed. As Liam's men closed in with brutal precision, the three thugs scrambled back in a panic."Alan, thank goodness we ran when we did. Those bastards would've broken our legs for sure!"Alan Weber, their leader, spat on the ground behind him, already regretting ever taking the job. "We didn't finish the job and still ended up screwed. Worst damn luck!"The three thugs hunched at the street corner, their curses sharp and angry. They knew they'd messed with the wrong people this time. Swallowing their pride was their only option now.The one with the missing tooth wasn't ready to let it go, scanning the area. His eyes caught a woman passing by, her curves outlined by tight clothes."Alan, that last chick got away, but look—here's another one.""After the beating we just took, you're still thinking with your dick? Some things never change!"Alan kicked him hard. Still, his gaze flicked toward the woman before he could

"You keep getting close to Jackie, touching her, too. What the hell are you after?" Eugene's eyes darkened, storm clouds brewing in his gaze.Liam caught the edge in Eugene's tone and smirked. "After? We're just friends. You're the one with the dirty mind."Eugene's brows furrowed. He saw Liam making moves on Jacklyn more than once, and it set off alarm bells for him.His features tightened, his fists forming with such force that his knuckles went white. He stood a few inches shorter than Liam, the weight of the latter's presence pressing down on him.A sharp wave of humiliation and rage washed over Eugene, and his fist rose slightly.Liam didn't flinch. He just watched, amused, as if daring Eugene. He was eager to see how far Eugene would go."Gene, don't do anything reckless. He's a Robertson!" Jacklyn cut in quickly, stopping Eugene. His eyes locked onto hers, disbelief twisting into something darker. "You're defending him, Jackie? I'm your husband."Jacklyn drew a deep brea

The moment Jacklyn realized Gloria had misunderstood, she quickly waved her hands in protest. "He's not—""Don't assume childbirth is solely a woman's responsibility," Gloria cut her off, finishing Jacklyn's paperwork before shifting to routine prenatal questions.Liam stayed silent at first, lingering off to the side. Finally, he asked casually, "Dr. Barlow, how is she? Is everything okay?"Gloria scanned Jacklyn's report, her expression tightening. "Your wife's condition isn't ideal. She's still in her first trimester and needs plenty of rest. Avoid taking her to crowded places."Keep her diet light—nothing heavy or greasy. She doesn't need rich supplements right now, just proper nutrition."As Liam heard that Jacklyn wasn't doing well, his face darkened, a flicker of unease flashing in his eyes. "Anything she shouldn't eat?"Noticing his tension, Gloria chuckled. "Young man, I can tell you're a first-time father. Relax. Right now, it's about keeping the mother stress-free. You

"Mr. Lloyd, I've brought the financial reports."Eugene snapped back to his senses, straightening his clothes before calling out, "Come in."Seeing her chance evaporate, Penelope scowled and slumped into the nearest chair. As Sammy delivered the report, Penelope kept flicking Eugene coy glances.Sammy's gaze dipped mid-explanation and caught the undone button at Eugene's collar. On the way out, he stole a few more looks at Penelope.Once clear of the office, Sammy pulled out a phone and dialed Jacklyn. "Mrs. Lloyd."Jacklyn went rigid, spine straightening. Why would Sammy be calling her out of the blue?"Yes? What is it?""I just saw Penelope in Mr. Lloyd's office. They seemed close…" Sammy hesitated but spilled everything anyway.Disgust flashed in Jacklyn's eyes. So they couldn't even wait. But the assets hadn't been transferred yet. She couldn't afford even a flicker of suspicion. She took a deep breath, then spoke up in their defense, "Penelope and Gene have always gotten

"No, Jackie. It's because I love you too much. I only had someone follow you to protect you!" Eugene said.He closed the distance between them and grabbed Jacklyn's shoulders, every part of him screaming to hold her so tight that she'd never slip away again.A sickening weight lodged in her throat. Her gut twisted.Silence stretched between them. Eugene leashed his temper, fingers digging into her shoulders as he bit out each word. "Liam's no good. He's got to have some other reason for getting close to you."Jacklyn drew a deep breath to steady herself, then tested the waters. "Are there even any good men left in the world?""Of course there are. I'm one of them, aren't I? Jackie, there's no one else in my heart but you."Eugene's voice was thick with sincerity. That lovesick gaze of his made her stomach turn."Jackie…"Eugene assumed Jacklyn was just angry about the surveillance, so he pulled her into his arms, trying to placate her.She shoved him away."How would you feel

"You're unbelievable. I've never seen a homewrecker act so brazenly!"Penelope seethed, but outmatched by the group, she had no choice but to slink away in defeat.…Back at the Stinson residence, the moment Penelope stepped inside, Rebecca's warm smile greeted her. Penelope turned her fury on her. "Mom, I just got humiliated out there, and you're still smiling?"Rebecca took in Penelope's flushed face and rushed over, steadying her with one arm and pressing a hand to her forehead. "Penelope, you're burning up. Are you running a fever?"Penelope shoved her away and flopped onto the couch with a huff, launching straight into her tirade. "It's all because of Jacklyn! That bitch!"Realizing it had something to do with Jacklyn again, Rebecca sat beside her, her grip tightening around Penelope's hand. "Is Jacklyn picking on you again?""She must've heard I joined a yoga class and got jealous. So, she followed me there and threw herself at Gene just to humiliate me in front of every

Eugene's denial came too quickly, guilt edging his voice. "Jackie, stop joking around. You're the only one I care about."He reached for Jacklyn's hand, his fingers tightening around hers. "Let's keep going."Jacklyn's expression stayed cool, but a flicker of disdain coiled inside her. How could he say something so nauseating with a straight face? Before Eugene could speak again, his phone rang. His brows furrowed. If this kept up, he'd slip soon."I'll be right back," Eugene said, flashing Jacklyn a smile. He pulled her close, his arm sliding around her waist. Then, he pressed a kiss to her forehead before hurrying out.Eugene took the stairs two at a time, his face darkening as he reached Penelope's yoga room. He was sick of juggling them both. There was no way he could let Jacklyn and Penelope meet here."Gene, you're leaving? You promised you'd stay with me and the baby. How can you back out now?" Penelope's lips pursed, irritation flaring as she realized he was about to le

Eugene got to his destination eventually by following the navigation device. He got out of the car and entered the place. Yet, a familiar silhouette caught his eye."Jackie?"Jacklyn sensed that someone was watching her intently from behind. She glanced over her shoulder and met Eugene's eyes. She could not help wondering what he was doing there.Eugene swiftly adjusted his expression and walked over to Jacklyn. He tried to appear calm as he placed his arm around her shoulders."Jackie, I was looking for you everywhere. It turned out you were here!"Jacklyn stiffened. She wiped off the sweat on her forehead. "Isn't it time for your morning meetings at work? Shouldn't you be at the office? Also, how did you find out I was here?"She furrowed her brows.Eugene pursed his lips. He explained, "I heard it from Mrs. Crawford. She said you went out early in the morning for your yoga lesson. I canceled my morning meetings since I was worried about you being alone while you were out and

"He's right," someone else chimed in. "You're a ladies' man, Mr. Robertson. You couldn't possibly settle for some lady so soon."Liam's eyes narrowed. He glanced at the group of friends around him. Suddenly, he found this situation rather disappointing. He grabbed his jacket and headed for the door. He did not want to stay around in this place any longer.…At the Stinson residence, Penelope, who was about to turn in for the night, received a call from Eugene. She answered the phone and said grumpily, "Don't worry. I'll rest at home and refrain from going out and causing any trouble."Eugene paid no mind to her sarcastic tone. He went straight to the point. "The Roza Hotel, Room 312."Penelope wondered what he was planning, asking her to meet him at a hotel in the middle of the night. Could it be that he wanted to pass the necklace to her?At the thought of that, she immediately got up and dressed up nicely. After she got ready, she headed over to the hotel.Eugene opened the d
