Chapter 604

Author: Gathered Light
The moon shone brightly, and the stars were few and scattered.

Jacklyn found herself in a good mood.

At the mouth of a dim alley nearby, a burly man, Clifford Denham, watched her approach with eyes that seemed to cut right through the night.

Here she came.

"Stop!" He lunged forward, pocketknife in hand, and seized Jacklyn. His movements were quick and precise.

"What do you want? Who are you?" Jacklyn shivered, frozen in place. Her bag almost slipped off her shoulder, but she caught it just in time.

Panic surged, of course, yet moments like this demanded calm. One wrong word or one misstep, and it could be the end.

Clifford's deep voice cut through the air. "It doesn't matter who I am. What you need to understand is that Mr. Robertson already has a lover and a child. He won't look out for you or your son.

"You'd be wise to stay away. Cross that line, and don't say I didn't warn you."

So, he was sent by Bianca. The plan wasn't bad, but the approach could've used some refinement.

Liam texted back, "I'll send people there immediately."Jacklyn couldn't sleep. Worry twisted in her chest. She hadn't heard from Theodore in days. She didn't know if he'd eaten, if he'd slept well, or if Rebecca had been mistreating him.Looking around the empty house, her chest tightened, as if Theodore's presence still filled every corner.Sniffling, Jacklyn picked up her phone and texted, "Thanks, Abel. How did you manage to find Theo?"Sensing Jacklyn's confusion, Abel texted back, pride in his words, "I met a tech expert a while ago. He just developed a new tracking system, and he happened to be in Cyrelia promoting it. I never expected it would be useful so soon."Jacklyn's phone lit up with a long message from him. As she read it, much of the worry that had hung over her for the past few days finally lifted.…In the run-down, bustling part of Swanford, Liam's men finally forced the apartment door open after banging on it repeatedly.Light flooded the dim interior, reve

Penelope eased back into her stool after speaking.Theodore lay face down on the floor, wincing against the pain. "You're meant to be my mom's mother and sister… So why? Why go after her like this?"Rage flared inside Penelope."Sisters? Give me a break! If it weren't for that bitch, my life wouldn't have been such a misery! You wouldn't even be seeing me here!"She shook with fury.Theodore struggled to sit up, clutching his stomach. "What did my mom do?"What did Jacklyn do? Plenty! In Penelope's mind, memories of everything Jacklyn had done to her played like a fast-forward reel. Seeing Theodore only stoked her fury. She sneered, her voice thick with contempt. "What else could she have done? All sorts of shady schemes. She acts all proper and noble in public, but behind closed doors, she's a seductress, moving from one man to the next!"After giving Rebecca a few instructions and some money, Penelope started to walk away. But before she went for good, she spun back, cursed

Penelope went on, one outrageous remark after another, and Ian couldn't bear it."You're being rude and ridiculous!" he snapped, then walked off, refusing to spare her another glance.Left alone, Penelope remained in her seat, struggling to pull herself together. Her hair was still slightly messy, and the hatred in her eyes for Jacklyn threatened to boil over. She grabbed her phone and sent a message. A reply came back shortly after.Glancing at the twisting, out-of-the-way address, Penelope couldn't help but be impressed by Rebecca. It wasn't long before Penelope arrived at the place. The clamor of countless market stalls never ceased in the busy square, and the air was thick with the smell of roasting meats and fresh bread.People strolled past in sandals or haggled fiercely over fruits and vegetables at the stalls. After making her way through the part of the market too tight for cars, Penelope felt utterly filthy. It wasn't until she went further inside that the chaos and me

Ian cut straight to the point. "Did you have Rebecca take Theo away?"Penelope had just sat down, barely touching her drink, when the question froze her.Why was he getting involved in this mess? She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, deliberately avoiding his eyes. "I wouldn't have known about any of this if you hadn't asked."Truth be told, a thrill ran through her. She finally made Jacklyn suffer, first in matters of the heart, then in matters of kin.Who knew how often Jacklyn wept alone in the middle of the night?Penelope didn't bother masking her hostility toward Jacklyn. "Weren't you always at odds with her? So why the rush to call me out the moment something went wrong?"Her eyes carried a hint of reproach. "You actually came to question me because of her?"Ian didn't get angry. He knew Penelope well enough. Remarks like this were practically her version of politeness. He remembered the old tension between him and Jacklyn, their eventual reconciliation over Lucy,

Jacklyn pressed her lips together and let out a long sigh. "Fine. I'll give you the money. Just give Theo back."She had hoped that would settle Rebecca, but it didn't.Slowly, Rebecca spoke, "It's too late."Jacklyn gritted her teeth, holding back the last of her patience. "What do you want, then?"Liam hovered nearby, worry written all over his face, too afraid to speak."I want you out of the country. Never to return.""Why? Aren't I your own daughter? Why are you so desperate to see me gone?"Jacklyn couldn't make sense of it. Rebecca didn't want the money or anything else. Her only aim was to see Jacklyn leave Cyrelia. It was nothing like the patterns Jacklyn knew from Rebecca and George."Have you ever treated me like your mother? You've never listened to me, and you've always defied your father and me. You never respected us, treating us like we're beneath you!"Rebecca's fury poured out in a rush, then, almost immediately, she added, "I'm done talking. Book your flight

In the end, Romy couldn't shake the worry. She stayed with Theodore for a little while.Only after he seemed more comfortable did she finally leave, glancing back repeatedly before getting into a car and heading back to the set.Theodore blinked up at the ceiling. He really wished Jacklyn would come pick him up right now. Then, he wouldn't have to sit there, stuck in boredom.Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and Theodore was puzzled.Hadn't Romy already left?He clambered onto a small stool to peer through the peephole. How could Rebecca be here?Theodore leaped down and was about to open the door when Jacklyn's words came back to him, telling him that not every mother was a good mother. He'd also promised her he'd never see Rebecca again. He always listened to Jacklyn. Pouting his lips, he turned away from the door."Ouch! Theo! Theo, are you there? Help me!"Rebecca's fake cries were loud enough for Theodore to hear every word through the door. Then came the heavy banging. The
