CHAPTER 39

ERIC’S POV

The rage coursing through me was so intense it could set my veins on fire. I was angry at myself because I knew I had crossed the line. I said things I shouldn’t have and made her cry which I hated. But I was also angry at her for thinking she could buy me off like that with her body.

Everything I have done so far is to keep her safe. To soothe her worries, eliminate her fears, and make her life better even if it was just a little. But it seems she doesn’t see it that way. From the looks of it, it’ll be hard for her to settle in and accept me.

I didn’t expect her to do that quickly because she had seen too much and witnessed too many painful memories with the people in her life, especially the men, which made it difficult for her to trust them. But she had to understand that I’m not like the rest of them.

I’m nothing like her father who betrayed her, nothing like Hermes and Nolan who abused and broke her. I’m nothing like all the men in her previous life. I’ll

CHAPTER 73ADRIANNA’S POVPop!My lips split open in a soundless gasp on seeing the guard’s lifeless body sprawled in the middle of the road. That sharp pop sound like a champagne cork snapping loose and flying open was his skull bursting as it smashed against the asphalt floor. Crimson blood oozed out, forming a dark pool around his head, spreading slowly—like a creeping flood ready to engulf everything in its path. The few people around me who had been acting indifferently all that time—the guard was dragging me, and I was screaming for help—finally looked in our direction. From the look on their faces, they were horrified by the sight but didn’t scream, almost as if they were used to seeing something like this on a daily basis.Just how can anyone see this and remain the same? There was no need to call the ambulance or for help. A hearse will be needed instead because from all that insane amount of blood, the lifeless emptiness in his eyes which had been revealed as his sunglasses

CHAPTER 72 ADRIANNA’S POV “Stupid girl,” a voice sneered. “You think you can escape us.” I looked up, my heart skipping a beat on seeing the face of one of the bodyguards from earlier. Seeing how terrified I was, a smug smirk spread across his lips, his grip around my wrist tightening. “No…” I yelped out as he started pulling me forward the long path of the street like a weightless doll. “Get away from me…” I tried to tear his fingers off my wrist but couldn’t. His grip was so strong and unyielding as though his hand was forged from the strongest of iron. The more I tried, the more he doubled his efforts, his fingers digging ruthlessly into the flesh as he tightened his grip. Pain shot through my wrist. It felt like my bones were being crushed under the weight of his grip, the agonizing pain spreading like wildfire along the length of hand. “Please…” Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as I pleaded with him. But it all fell on deaf ears. His eyes were covered with eer

CHAPTER 71ADRIANNA’S POVThe garbage bags inside the dumpster tumbled noisily, cushioning the effect of my fall as I landed hard on them. Taking a quick look down before I jumped, I didn’t think I'd land accurately into the dumpster. I was afraid I might hit the metallic edge or plummet to the hard asphalt floor. I guess I am luckier and stronger than I thought for having done something like this.Clumsily, I scrambled out of the container, my padded belly making movement difficult. Good thing I cinched it tight around my waist so it won’t budge even with all the jerky frantic movements. When I managed to crawl out, the people around were staring at me with wide eyes, trying to wrap their heads around what they just saw. I made it seem like it was normal for a heavily pregnant lady to jump down from a tall building. My head wrap now stood wobbly on my head, letting some strands of my hair slip, sticking to my damp forehead. Grime smeared my clothes, hair, face, every part of me and t

CHAPTER 70 ADRIANNA’S POV “I might look old and tired,” she pressed on, trying so hard to make them believe her. “But my eyes haven’t failed me yet. I know what I saw. I know it’s them…” She jutted her chin forward to add weight to her words, staring at them fiercely as she waited for them to say something. The bodyguards glanced at each other as if silently weighing her words, contemplating whether to believe her or not. “Which room did they check into?” One of them asked. “Room 3,” she answered quickly with gladness in her tone, sliding something her hand covered on the desk towards them. Lifting her hand from it, she revealed a key. The duplicate key for our room. The bodyguard attempted to take it but she covered it again and slid it away from him. “Easy there tiger,” she shook her head playfully, clicking her tongue. “Before I hand this key over to you, you must assure me that I’m going to get my millionaire dollar reward immediately. In full.” I glared at that

CHAPTER 69ADRIANNA’S POVIf it were up to me, I would have never agreed to stay in this old, rusty place. The air was so thick and smelly that I could barely pull my thoughts together. The fan on the ceiling was worse than the one we had back in that house, barely doing anything to stir the air. This one was rickety and groaning. With every spin it made, I was afraid that a loose screw might give way and it’d fall on me.The bathroom walls were so small that I could literally touch both sides without stretching my arms. It was a war trying to bathe in there. I hope we’ll leave tomorrow like Eric promised so I won’t get to bathe in there again. Not to mention the ominous stillness that clung to the place like a thick cloak, it creeped the hell out of me. Even though Eric doesn’t see this place like I do, and feels like it was the safest place for us because it’s tucked away and was too odd and unattractive to draw attention, something about the place and that receptionist lady with he

CHAPTER 68ERIC’S POVShock flew through me, leaving me wordless, blinking in disbelief. For a moment, I couldn’t help wondering if Coach Steele made this up, using the poor boy as a convenient scapegoat to cover up for what he did.But I didn’t want to bring it up. Now more than anything, I wanted to stop doubting him and questioning his loyalty because he has proven to be the only person who has never turned his back on me, no matter how ugly things got. The only person I can trust and rely on.I had to shake my head slightly, as if physically tossing the disbelief off me to snap out of the shock I was caught in.“How?… I don’t understand… How exactly did he rat us out because I don’t remember seeing him again after he served us and came to call you that day?…” My brows squished in confusion as I stared at him, finding this vaguely disturbing and unsettling while at the same time, trying to connect the dots and make sense of it.Just how in the world did someone I only met once in
