Chapter 1

Author: Hardcore Fairy
On the day my husband, Caleb Vale, laid his first love, Layla Shaw, to rest, he turned to me and flung our wedding ring into the sea.

For the next 12 years, the breakfasts I brought him were tossed away untouched, and the scarf I painstakingly knitted through the night was thrown into the flames and burned to nothing.

He was the cruelest when he looked me in the eye and said, "Aurora, if you really want me to be happy, you might as well go die."

But when a mugger lunged at me with a knife, Caleb stepped in front of me without a moment's hesitation.

As he lay dying in my arms, he used the last of his strength to force out a few broken words. "Go… I hope I never see you again in my next life."

At the funeral, Helena Rogers sobbed until she fainted. "This is all my fault. I never should've arranged for you two to be married…"

Everyone around us pitied him and resented me. They whispered that misfortune followed me and wondered why fate hadn't taken me instead.

And honestly, I wondered the same thing. Why not me?

When Caleb was finally buried, I went to the top floor of the building and let myself fall.

As I hovered on the edge of death, a cold, mechanical voice echoed in my mind. "Binding complete. Wish detected. The system will now send you back 12 years."

"Aurora Wynne, you really are something," Caleb coldly said. He continued, "You used Grandpa's dying wish to force me into marrying you. Did you actually think that would be enough to trap me?"

We stood in the center of the ballroom, Caleb facing me directly, his figure framed by the glow of the chandelier above.

There was a bold, rebellious confidence in his eyes, nothing like the man he would become in 12 years.

This was Caleb at 19.

I really had gone back 12 years, to the time before the wedding, when the invitations were only just being prepared.

"You like Layla and want to marry her, right?" I asked, my eyes glued to his youthful face.

He raised an eyebrow and laughed. "If you already know, then why bother asking? It's not like you'd ever step aside for us anyway."

"Yes, I will," I firmly replied.

My fall from the building had activated the system, dragging me back 12 years and giving me a second chance. It also handed me three wish cards.

Caleb paused for a moment, then let out a disbelieving, angry laugh. "Our wedding date has already been set. And now, you're saying you'll step aside for Layla? How, exactly? Aurora, I'm not interested in playing hard to get with you."

He turned away and plopped into a chair. The contempt in his eyes cut straight through me.

In my previous life, I had loved Caleb for years.

He had risked his life for me three times, and I had naively believed that meant he felt something for me, too. So, I begged his parents to let me marry him.

It was only when Layla died that I realized the woman he'd loved all along wasn't me.

All those years of devotion turned into nothing but suffering for me. If he never loved me, then this time, I would choose a different ending for us.

Before I woke up in this younger body, the system had warned me. "You will be sent back 12 years in time. Within 24 hours, you must complete his three wishes. Once all three are fulfilled, you must leave immediately.

"After that, the two of you will go your separate ways. He won't lose his life at 31 years old because of you, and both of you will eventually find the people meant for you.

"But there will be a price for going back. Think carefully."

As long as Caleb could stay alive, I wasn't afraid of any price. I had already seen his three wishes written in his journal.

"I don't want to marry Aurora. I want to follow my own heart, not my parents' plans. I want to save Layla."

I figured that his first wish was already as good as granted.

Just a few minutes earlier, I had quietly written Layla's name on the wedding invitation and slipped it into his hand.

Caleb looked at me with open disdain and reached to open it.

I pressed my hand over his and offered a faint smile. "Read it tomorrow. You'll be pleasantly surprised."

Caleb gave me a long, unreadable look.

When the final list came out, I was surprised to see my name on it.That day, I met Caleb at a cafe and got straight to the point. I asked, "Did you pull strings for me? What did it cost you?"He answered casually, as if it were nothing. "I gave up a small chunk of shares. It's no big deal. You're worth it."I almost laughed from sheer frustration. That wasn't something insignificant. I doubted he had even bothered to get the other shareholders' approval before making that decision.Caleb just leaned back and said, "None of that matters. As long as you're happy, I'm fine. You're the most important person in my life."The most important person?I kept staring at him, and the tips of his ears turned red. He cleared his throat and said, "I saw you liked that picture of the flower fields the other day. I planned a surprise for you tonight. By then, you'll—""Caleb," I cut in softly. He saw something shift in my expression and rushed to explain. "You don't like flowers? I'm sorry. I

But fortunately, his decision didn't affect the future I had come back to. I let out a quiet breath of relief. In those 12 years, Caleb never argued with me the way he used to. All the stomach problems he'd developed in the previous life from skipping meals and working himself to death never appeared this time. Now, he wasn't as reckless or cocky as he once was. He carried a more mature calm, almost like an older broth

Helena pulled out her phone and tapped to play a recording. In the recording, Layla's voice came through, laced with malice and manipulation. "Mrs. Vale, did you really think that forcing Caleb to marry Aurora would ever make him love her? All I have to do is crook a finger and spin a few lies, and he comes running to me like a fool."He believes every single word I say. I'm the only one he cares about. I could string him along for a lifetime, and he'd still lap it up. But honestly, he's just my backup. Why waste my youth on one man when it's so much more fun to keep a few?"Helena snapped, her voice shaking with rage. "You shameless bitch! Aren't you afraid you'll have to answer for this one day?"Layla snorted in contempt, and the recording ended with a sharp click.Caleb stared at the phone, stunned. This wasn't the Layla he'd pictured in his mind at all.Helena patted his shoulder and let out a long sigh. "I don't know what hold she has over you, but she's far more calculatin

The thermos slipped from Caleb's hand and hit the floor with a sharp crack, sending soup splashing everywhere.A second later, his roar tore through the hallway. "What did you just say?"It felt like a hammer had hit him square in the chest, sending pain ripping through his heart. He forced himself to steady his breathing and rushed toward the door, but his knees suddenly buckled and he stumbled.Fortunately, Owen grabbed his arm just in time to keep him upright."Where is she now? Take me to her right now!" Caleb barked.Owen rushed him down the corridor to the ward.Caleb shoved the door open so hard that it hit the stopper with a bang."Wait, Mr. Vale, you can't go in!"A couple of nurses hurried forward, trying to block him, but he brushed them off and strode straight to the bed.His hands trembled as he lifted the sheet. The moment he saw the person's face, he froze."This... isn't Aurora."The nurse who had rushed in behind him flushed bright red."This patient just

It was the same beetroot soup I used to pester Caleb's housekeeper to make for me when I was a child."Does it still hurt?" Caleb asked. He blew on the spoon until the steam thinned, then held it to my lips. "I was out of line yesterday. Don't take it to heart. But Layla really didn't do anything wrong. Stop going after her."My fingers trembled slightly as I took the bowl from him.In my previous life, I would have burst into tears, screaming that Layla had framed me and insisting the engagement be called off at once. But now, I just shook my head. "I won't do it again."Caleb let out a breath of relief, a rare softness flickering in his eyes. "Once you're discharged, we can travel overseas. You always said you wanted to—""No," I cut in, gently pushing the bowl back toward him. "I chose to help Layla. You don't need to make it up to me."His hand trembled around the spoon, the injury he got saving me from that cliff fall acting up again.I looked at his pale knuckles, my thro

Caleb's breath hit my face, thick with alcohol. "Aurora, how far are you going to push Layla before you're satisfied?"His fingers dug into my wrist so hard that it felt like he could snap the bone. A sharp, drilling pain shot up my arm, and the blood drained from my face.In my previous life, Layla tried to end her life because Caleb married me. A month after our wedding, she slit her wrists and died from massive blood loss.Caleb couldn't find a matching blood type in time, so he could only watch as her life slipped away. From then on, he hated me. He held on to that hatred until he died, and he never forgave me.But in this life, I hadn't even married him yet. So why had Layla still chosen to hurt herself? The system's voice echoed in my mind. "You only have one wish card left. Are you sure you want to use it on Caleb and not keep it for yourself?"I remembered what would happen in 12 years and nodded without hesitation. It was the only way to end everything between us.I ha
