Chapter 4

Author: Fiona Fenwick
Dorian tossed me to the guards without a backward glance and turned toward Portia. As I was shoved into a carriage, I caught one last glimpse through the falling curtain of Dorian gently helping Portia into his.

The road was rough, and the carriage jolted the entire way. My throat was still dry and mute from where he had pressed the nerve.

All I could do was watch through the gap as Portia and Dorian talked and laughed together, the sight settling in my chest like something cold.

I knew Portia had not brought me along out of pity.

Sure enough, from the moment we entered the household, the cruelty never stopped. In the space of half a month, she had knocked over scalding tea onto my hands more times than I could count, watching the blisters rise without a flicker of remorse.

She had even made me kneel in the snow until dawn for no reason other than spite.

Dorian and Lucian never once intervened.

During that time, Lucian sent Portia a gift, an entire case of pearls worth three times more than the betrothal gifts he had given when he courted me in our past life.

I had watched him tuck a hairpin into Portia's hair with his own hands, his gaze so tender and deeply in love.

When he turned and caught sight of me sweeping the corridor, he would not spare me so much as a glance.

Dorian doted on Portia as though she were the most precious thing in the world. He taught her swordplay himself and even had a silver hand-warmer crafted for her so she would never feel the cold.

On her birthday, they hosted a grand banquet at the estate and invited every notable family in the capital. Dorian stood before the gathered crowd and announced that Portia was the young lady of the General's household and the woman that he would protect with his life.

He had forgotten that I was his real sister.

Inside the banquet hall, glasses clinked and congratulations rang out on all sides. Outside, Portia's servants had dragged me to the stone steps and forced me to my knees as a stepping stool.

Servants in fine boots climbed up and down over my back, and with every footfall, the welts Portia had carved into my skin with a cane felt as though they were being torn open all over again.

I clenched my jaw until my face went pale. The nerve Dorian had pressed still held, and I could not force out so much as a whimper.

Tears pooled in my eyes. I did not want to look at their warmth, their celebration. However, the memories would not stop.

I could still see Dorian holding my hand at a banquet in our past life, swearing before everyone that he would protect me for the rest of his days. I could still hear Lucian's vows. All of it flickered before me in relentless succession.

Everything they had once given me, they now gave to Portia.

The wind drove flecks of snow onto my lashes, and I laughed. It came out of nowhere.

Melted snow and tears slipped into my mouth, salty and cold. I told myself there was nothing to grieve over.

The place where my heart should have been still felt frozen solid, aching with a dull, slow throb that would not fade.

I had expected to cry again, the way I did every time I watched them choose Portia and look straight through me.

However, at that moment, I realized my eyes had gone too dry to shed a single tear.

Once every guest had entered, I was finally allowed to stand. Wind drove snow down the back of my collar as I braced my frozen, rigid knees and hauled myself up from the icy steps.

Music and laughter drifted from the banquet hall like needles dipped in ice, sharp enough to make my ears ache. I kept my eyes forward.

The cold that had seeped into my body while I knelt as their footrest now bored deep into the gaps between my bones. As the pain spread, I dragged my leaden legs toward the kitchen in the back courtyard.

It was time for dinner, so I pushed the door open. However, I found the stove cold and the food barrel empty.

"I already told you." The cook, Mrs. Locke, looked me up and down out of the corner of her eye, her lip curled.

"Tonight's food was made for the banquet guests. There's nothing here for you, so what are you even doing back?"

The food in her hands sent a sharp cramp through my stomach.

I opened my mouth to argue, but another servant walked in, pinching her nose while carrying a half-full slop bucket.

[Third Person’s Point-of-View.]The snow had started again without anyone noticing. Icy flakes struck Dorian and Lucian’s faces as they stood on the stone steps outside the gates, looking around with nothing left to see.Regret swallowed them like a rising tide. They wanted to force their way back in, but they knew it would change nothing. The girl they had thrown away was never going to turn around. Then, without warning, lines of unfamiliar writing shimmered into the air before them.It was the same kind of text that had appeared around Liora, the scrolling comments. They sensed the story was over and knew they would vanish soon, but before they faded, they drifted deliberately into the two men's line of sight and left words that cut like needles.[You fools!][Portia died in your past life because Duke Helford withheld the antidote when she failed to deliver the intelligence he wanted. He let the poison kill her on purpose.][Liora had nothing to do with it!][And what did y

Lucian reached for my cheek as he spoke. I turned my face away, and the warmth drained from behind his eyes. He forced a pained smile and kept going."In our past life, I never should have shut myself away in a monastery over guilt that was never real. I never should have left you to spend the rest of your life alone."This time, I won't make the same mistake. For the rest of my days, I'll stay by your side. I'll watch our children grow up with you. Please, Lia."Dorian watched me, and I could see the moment he remembered. The way I had looked just before I died in our past life, gaunt and frail, aged far beyond my years.Only now did it seem to hurt him.His voice had gone rough. "I'm the one who failed you, Lia. I was blind. I let Portia poison everything I believed."I will never take her side again. I will never let you suffer again. Please, come home with us."They spoke one after another, offering repentance and promises that had arrived far too late, trying to pull me out

At that moment, Dorian and Lucian could no longer lie to themselves. The cold that flooded through them was like ice water poured straight through their chests. Even breathing hurt."She really was using us."Dorian murmured the words to himself. The documents in his hand were crumpled nearly to shreds. Lucian stood beside him, his face drained of color. The evidence from this life and the memories of the last combined until denial was no longer possible. The guilt they had carried across two lifetimes, the desperate need to make amends, had been nothing from start to finish but a carefully orchestrated lie. While both men sat drowning in regret, a servant hurried in with a gold-lettered invitation, his voice tight with alarm."General, Chancellor, the Duke's estate has sent word. Duke Prescott says he has found the love of his life and intends to hold the wedding today. You are both invited to attend.""Today?"Dorian's head snapped up. His stomach dropped. The image of me lea

In this life, they had poured everything into making amends with Portia and had never thought to assign the shadow guards to me. That was precisely why the guards had been free to conduct a thorough investigation and uncover what had been hiding in plain sight. They knew their shadow guards were meticulous. Anything they reported could be trusted without question. However, that stubborn thread of attachment to what they believed Portia had meant to them in their past life made the truth almost impossible to swallow.Dorian waved a hand, his voice heavy. "Investigate further. Verify every detail. I want no room for doubt."Lucian said nothing, but the slight dip of his head signaled agreement. His fingers traced the edge of the desk without thought, and the weight pressing down on him felt like stone. After the shadow guard withdrew, Portia sent a servant to invite them for an outing in the city. On any other day, they would have agreed without hesitation. Tonight, with the shadow

After the scandal, the late King had issued a decree in his fury. Every member of the peerage, regardless of sex, was to be marked on the arm at birth as proof of their virtue.Duke Prescott had spent years living as a well-known wastrel and libertine. How could his mark still be there? He seemed to read the question on my face. A hint of self-consciousness crept into his expression, but his voice was low and steady."The Crown Princess's household used to hold enormous power. While my uncle was alive, he saw my mother's family as a threat. If I hadn't put on the act of a useless rake, they would have treated me as a target. I might not have survived."He raised his eyes to mine, and there was nothing in them but sincerity."I've been in love with you since the moment I saw you at that banquet in our past life."I'm showing you this because I don't want you to misunderstand me. I don't want you to think I brought you along on a whim."The new King has taken the throne. I stand w

Dorian and Lucian both froze where they stood. Their lips moved as though they still had something to say, but Duke Prescott's warm voice reached me first."Liora."I turned at once and walked quickly toward his outstretched hand. The moment his fingers closed firmly around mine, the warmth of his palm chased the cold from my fingertips. It chased away the last trace of longing I had carried for anything behind me.I did not look back. I climbed into the carriage, stepped over the piled snow on the running board, and let the curtain fall. The two figures standing frozen in the snow disappeared from sight. The carriage rolled over the snow and left Dorian and Lucian far behind.Dorian clenched his fists. His body was rigid beneath his dark cloak. Lucian took a step forward on instinct, ready to follow, but Dorian seized his wrist and pulled him back."If she won't accept our goodwill, let her go."His voice was ice, but something unsteady flickered behind his eyes, a disquiet he
