Chapter 3

작가: Fiona Fenwick
After that, I had wrecked the welcoming banquet they threw for Portia and destroyed every betrothal gift Lucian prepared for her.

Portia, heartbroken, had locked herself away. The next day, she was found dead from poisoning.

Every piece of evidence pointed to me. The farewell letter she left behind only cemented what Dorian and Lucian already believed: that I was vicious and cruel, too jealous to let Portia live.

They did not punish me. They simply never looked at me again.

Lucian left for a monastery outside the city. Dorian requested a post on the frontier and never came back.

For the next 30 years, I raised my children and managed the household alone. My dark hair turned white. When I finally lay dying, they came back to see me one last time.

Through the haze, I heard Dorian's voice, heavy with regret.

"We should have left things as they were. We never should have brought you home."

Lucian said nothing, but his sigh cut through me like a blade.

I died that day, filled with nothing but bitterness.

Then I woke to this one, the very day they had come to the orphanage to collect their lost sister.

Knowing they would choose Portia, I had clutched my pendant and resolved to wait quietly until I came of age in a month, then leave this place behind. I would find a small town where no one knew my name and live the rest of my days in peace.

This time, I would not expose Portia. I wanted nothing to do with the ‘family’ that had caused me half a lifetime of suffering.

I had never imagined that a snapped cord would lead to Dorian seizing our mother's pendant in front of everyone, or that he would strike me across the face for it.

The winter wind cut across my stinging cheek like a blade. As things took a turn, the comments scattered in confusion.

A bead of blood fell from my lip and hit the cobblestone. The dark stain spread through the snow the way the last tear had slipped from my eye the moment I died in our previous life.

The ache in my chest had gone numb when the headmistress seized a fistful of my hair with her rough hands.

"Shameless wretch! You stole Miss Portia's pendant, yet you still dare to talk back?

"I'll break your legs today and throw you out back to chop firewood!"

Another blow landed. My whole body shook with pain, but I followed her without resistance.

Portia stepped forward. She wore a fine fur-lined cloak, and her eyes were full of quiet triumph.

"Please don't be upset, ma'am." She smoothed her voice into something gentle.

"Liora just lost her head for a moment, wanting a better life. The pendant's been found, so please, don't hit her anymore."

She reached out and brushed her fingers over my frost-bitten hand, her face the picture of pity.

"Back at the orphanage, Liora always shared half her bread with me. I haven't forgotten her kindness. I want good things for her too."

She smiled at me, then turned toward the two men standing by the carriage, her voice soft and sweet.

"Dorian, Mr. Moreau, could I bring her with us? Even working as a servant in the General's household would be better than starving and freezing here."

Dorian frowned. However, the moment he met Portia's pleading gaze, his expression eased.

Lucian gave a resigned nod. "How could we say no when you're the one asking?"

Portia's face lit up. I jerked my head up, and the words that tore from my throat came out broken.

"I won't go!"

I did not want to leave with them. In the next instant, someone seized me by the back of my collar.

Dorian's fingers dug into a nerve at the side of my neck. Numbness spread through my entire body, and I could not make a sound.

"If Portia weren't this kind, you'd have been beaten to death already. Don't push your luck."

  • Saving Myself From My Fate   Chapter 13

[Third Person’s Point-of-View.]The snow had started again without anyone noticing. Icy flakes struck Dorian and Lucian’s faces as they stood on the stone steps outside the gates, looking around with nothing left to see.Regret swallowed them like a rising tide. They wanted to force their way back in, but they knew it would change nothing. The girl they had thrown away was never going to turn around. Then, without warning, lines of unfamiliar writing shimmered into the air before them.It was the same kind of text that had appeared around Liora, the scrolling comments. They sensed the story was over and knew they would vanish soon, but before they faded, they drifted deliberately into the two men's line of sight and left words that cut like needles.[You fools!][Portia died in your past life because Duke Helford withheld the antidote when she failed to deliver the intelligence he wanted. He let the poison kill her on purpose.][Liora had nothing to do with it!][And what did y

Lucian reached for my cheek as he spoke. I turned my face away, and the warmth drained from behind his eyes. He forced a pained smile and kept going."In our past life, I never should have shut myself away in a monastery over guilt that was never real. I never should have left you to spend the rest of your life alone."This time, I won't make the same mistake. For the rest of my days, I'll stay by your side. I'll watch our children grow up with you. Please, Lia."Dorian watched me, and I could see the moment he remembered. The way I had looked just before I died in our past life, gaunt and frail, aged far beyond my years.Only now did it seem to hurt him.His voice had gone rough. "I'm the one who failed you, Lia. I was blind. I let Portia poison everything I believed."I will never take her side again. I will never let you suffer again. Please, come home with us."They spoke one after another, offering repentance and promises that had arrived far too late, trying to pull me out

At that moment, Dorian and Lucian could no longer lie to themselves. The cold that flooded through them was like ice water poured straight through their chests. Even breathing hurt."She really was using us."Dorian murmured the words to himself. The documents in his hand were crumpled nearly to shreds. Lucian stood beside him, his face drained of color. The evidence from this life and the memories of the last combined until denial was no longer possible. The guilt they had carried across two lifetimes, the desperate need to make amends, had been nothing from start to finish but a carefully orchestrated lie. While both men sat drowning in regret, a servant hurried in with a gold-lettered invitation, his voice tight with alarm."General, Chancellor, the Duke's estate has sent word. Duke Prescott says he has found the love of his life and intends to hold the wedding today. You are both invited to attend.""Today?"Dorian's head snapped up. His stomach dropped. The image of me lea

In this life, they had poured everything into making amends with Portia and had never thought to assign the shadow guards to me. That was precisely why the guards had been free to conduct a thorough investigation and uncover what had been hiding in plain sight. They knew their shadow guards were meticulous. Anything they reported could be trusted without question. However, that stubborn thread of attachment to what they believed Portia had meant to them in their past life made the truth almost impossible to swallow.Dorian waved a hand, his voice heavy. "Investigate further. Verify every detail. I want no room for doubt."Lucian said nothing, but the slight dip of his head signaled agreement. His fingers traced the edge of the desk without thought, and the weight pressing down on him felt like stone. After the shadow guard withdrew, Portia sent a servant to invite them for an outing in the city. On any other day, they would have agreed without hesitation. Tonight, with the shadow

After the scandal, the late King had issued a decree in his fury. Every member of the peerage, regardless of sex, was to be marked on the arm at birth as proof of their virtue.Duke Prescott had spent years living as a well-known wastrel and libertine. How could his mark still be there? He seemed to read the question on my face. A hint of self-consciousness crept into his expression, but his voice was low and steady."The Crown Princess's household used to hold enormous power. While my uncle was alive, he saw my mother's family as a threat. If I hadn't put on the act of a useless rake, they would have treated me as a target. I might not have survived."He raised his eyes to mine, and there was nothing in them but sincerity."I've been in love with you since the moment I saw you at that banquet in our past life."I'm showing you this because I don't want you to misunderstand me. I don't want you to think I brought you along on a whim."The new King has taken the throne. I stand w

Dorian and Lucian both froze where they stood. Their lips moved as though they still had something to say, but Duke Prescott's warm voice reached me first."Liora."I turned at once and walked quickly toward his outstretched hand. The moment his fingers closed firmly around mine, the warmth of his palm chased the cold from my fingertips. It chased away the last trace of longing I had carried for anything behind me.I did not look back. I climbed into the carriage, stepped over the piled snow on the running board, and let the curtain fall. The two figures standing frozen in the snow disappeared from sight. The carriage rolled over the snow and left Dorian and Lucian far behind.Dorian clenched his fists. His body was rigid beneath his dark cloak. Lucian took a step forward on instinct, ready to follow, but Dorian seized his wrist and pulled him back."If she won't accept our goodwill, let her go."His voice was ice, but something unsteady flickered behind his eyes, a disquiet he
