I floored it from Bruce Marshall's ranch all the way out to Irvine on road signs since my internet was down, and my phone service was also down. The tornado-mini or not, that bitch was not friendly—struck the Ram a couple of times, putting me out off the road twice and making me spin into the other lane once. Miraculously, I had the road to myself as a crazy bastard and therefore did not crash into anyone.

Since I had to arrive in New York in decent enough shape to take care of a toddler, I did have to drive carefully and at a reasonable speed to prevent flying off to the next solar system. That added an additional forty minutes onto my flight to the private airport. When I got there, I found that my phone network was still down in the majority of the Dallas-Fort Worth area due to the weather.

I took an oath in seven languages, even though I was only monolingual, and snatched up a random airport worker's phone to dial Klaus. Her phone went straight to voicemail. I glanced at my watch.

The word resounded so thunderously that it filled the automobile, the block, the goddamn universe. Shane's personal driver flinched, the car jerking violently to one side before resuming its course on the road.I dug my fingers into my thigh to prevent screaming, bile surging the back of my throat. That initial reaction was partly because I realized that Klaus was in worse shape now and partly, I saw with dread, because I'd grown so attached to the little stinker."Kidnapped again?" I snarled."He, he, he, he…" Cal stuttered, gasping, her breathing shallow and rapid and out of synch, wheezing every time she tried to take in oxygen. "He just materialized. I-I-I thought you were back. I thought you had a key and knew it."White noise in the background was unmistakably a crowded Manhattan street. People chattering, laughing, sipping drinks, and horns blaring. She was walking in circles around the room. Not a good sign."He burst in. I struggled with him. I tried to shove him. I swear, Fl

My blood froze in my veins."Your boss is Shane Blackthorn?" I diverted my full attention from Taylor on stage to Gia."Hey, don't judge me." She scrunched up her nose. "The benefits are incredible, and every time I try to quit, he raises my salary. Do you know him?""He's friends with my boyf-" No. Flinn wasn't my boyfriend. We'd never discussed our formal titles. "My neighbor.".That pause there was giving," Alix laughed."And..." I grimaced, for some reason feeling guilty. "Did you say mini tornado? In Texas?""Yep, it's all over the news," Alix said. "No people dead or hurt, thank God, but it's looking bad. I've been watching the news every hour. Lots of property damage."Horror gripped every bone in my body. Was Flinn okay? Was he safe? I didn't even care about the Claire Larsen thing. Even if he screwed her seven ways from Sunday, I just wanted him to be safe. To be happy. Jesus, what was wrong with me? I should be furious, not worried."I think he's the one trashing your boss's

FLINNI slept through the goddamn apocalypse.Thunder clapped outside my bedroom. It sounded like a leather belt whipping against skin.My alarm phone never rang. I prodded my screen, looking at the clock. 5:15 a.m.I rubbed my eyes, staring out the window. In addition to raining like a fuck, patio furniture was being hurled through the air, twisting in on itself like a curling paper before hitting the ground with a splash. I could hear cries and screams, suffocated by the screeching wind, and squinted to see Bruce and Jolene, all bundled up and weighted down by big jackets, herding their cattle into the stables.I leapt out of bed like my bottom was on fire, not even bothering to put a shirt on, and skidded across the hallway. The front door burst off its hinges as I ripped it open and ran barefoot to Bruce. He was hammering the stables shut and piling big furniture against the door, his wife gone from sight too now."Coltridge, boy, nice to see you here. Come on and help me move thi

Klaus: You'll still be able to make it tomorrow, I guess?Klaus: Totally okay if not. I still have time to invite Pete to join Timothy and baby-sit Grav. Rosemary is staying back in the UK with the nanny.Like hell he would. First off, she was downplaying how much it meant to her that I showed up, and I knew that. Second, I'd rather eat my own bowels than be a terrible boyfriend in front of Pete.Flinn: I'll be there.Klaus: You don't have to, you really don't.Flinn: Why are you still awake?Klaus: I could ask you the same thing...I looked down at the bulge in my pants under my jeans. Touché. The fact that she'd stayed up just so we could talk made me get a chub.Klaus: I get that this weekend means a lot to you.Flinn: No. You're really important to me.She was typing, erasing. Typing, erasing.Klaus: You're only saying that because you want your dick wet before I take off for the gig.I gritted. Klaus was still having trouble with words of affirmation when they weren't her son. Bu

Flinn: LOL.Klaus: I'm serious.Flinn: I won't let you down, baby.Klaus: OMFG what's wrong with me? I completely believe you.Flinn: Is this a declaration of love?Klaus: Depends. Am I speaking to your dick?Flinn: Yes.Klaus: Then yes.Flinn: And if you're speaking to the man who owns it?Klaus: Getting warmer, but not yet.Flinn: Burn, baby, burn.FLINNI spent Thursday kissing so much Texan ass I was worried my breath would reek of manure and smoked brisket.Bruce Marshall had really put me to work as if I were his busiest call girl. There was a junket, a press release, a virtual conference, and a dinner with all of the investors who were involved in the project. It was two in the morning when I opened the door to my room. I sent a quick message to Klaus to let her know I was still alive, barely, and collapsed.Friday started at 6 a.m. I started my day torturing myself with a ninety-minute yoga class with age-obsessed tech moguls who were bragging that they were so flexible they c
