Chapter 1

The air seemed to freeze, and the three stared at me in complete shock, their expressions transforming instantly.

They fixed their eyes on my right hand, watching that slight but deadly tremor that, for a top surgeon, was nothing short of a career death sentence.

Mom's lips quivered as she asked in disbelief, "H-How could this happen? You were fine just yesterday! Are you just too tired?"

"The cause is unknown. Maybe it's just fate," I replied, pulling my hand back and shoving it into my white coat pocket.

"Fate?" Dad frowned deeply, his voice carrying a tone of reproach. "Amelia Baxter, don't talk nonsense! Are you… Are you still holding a grudge against us?"

I didn't answer him and just turned back to the surgical simulator.

When I was 18, I was brought back from the countryside to rejoin the Baxter family. It turned out that the beloved daughter the Baxter family had raised for 18 years, Sonia Baxter, was never their real child.

I was the real heiress of the Baxter family.

My adoptive parents had passed away early, and life was filled with hardships. When I returned to the Baxter family, I was deeply sensitive and insecure.

It was Sonia who showed me the most warmth. She taught me etiquette, bought me beautiful clothes, and protected me everywhere, saying we were sisters and I shouldn't feel constrained. My parents also said that Sonia was their daughter too, that they loved us both equally.

Since Sonia's birth family was very poor, they couldn't bear to send her away. Thus, they kept her and raised both daughters together.

I was grateful to them and to Sonia. I studied hard, desperately trying to become their pride, and swore I would protect our family of four. However, I no longer felt that way.

Mom started crying the second she saw I was silent. She yelled at me, "Amelia! Are you still holding resentment? Just because we loved Sonia a little more, you're harboring grudges and now refusing to save her life?"

She hissed, "Did you forget how much Sonia cared about you? When you stayed up late studying, who made you soup every single night?"

My heart still stung for a moment at those words.

Oliver Lyons quickly stepped up to catch Mom, trying to calm her down. "Mrs. Baxter, please don't get upset. Amelia isn't that kind of person!"

Then, he turned to me, his eyes full of pain. "Amelia, I know you feel wronged, but Sonia is innocent! You can't forget your duty as a doctor because of personal emotions!"

Dad had always been a dignified college professor. Yet, his eyes had turned teary, and his voice hoarse. "Amelia, even if your hand is injured, you could at least go in and provide guidance! Sonia is your sister, and you can't just watch her die!"

But I remained unmoved, simply adjusting my equipment.

Mom finally broke down completely and fell to her knees, wailing. "How did I raise such a cold-hearted, ruthless daughter? Sonia is so kind and always gave in to you, and now… now you want to force her to death?"

She cried her heart out as she pounded the floor with both fists. Soon, the noise drew the attention of the other staff outside.

They looked at me with confusion and disgust, but I just smiled. I said, "Well, I guess that's just her fate. Nothing I can do."

I sat back in my chair and picked up the surgical simulator's control stick again. On the screen, the robotic arm began working once more, and I focused intently as if everything outside had nothing to do with me.

Upon seeing how ruthless I was, Dad swayed a little on his feet.

Oliver stared at me, completely crushed. He took a deep breath, like he was making some life-altering decision. Then, he said, "Mr. and Mrs. Baxter, don't beg her anymore."

He turned to my parents, his voice firm as he declared, "Let me do it!"

A week later, the staff called to tell me Oliver wanted to see me. I was about to refuse, but he mentioned William's name.He said, "Actually, I've always been jealous of you. We were both Prof. McKenna's apprentices, but I couldn't measure up to you in anything, so I had to quit midway, using poor health as an excuse. He taught you everything, and you could immediately grasp and master it all." Oliver looked at me through the glass with a bitter smile.I was stunned by the revelation. However, I still asked calmly, "Is that why you agreed to work with Sonia?" He nodded, then shook his head. "I was just unwilling to accept it… But I never really wanted to kill you…" Back then, the core concept of micro-dissection skills was William's unfinished life's work. At that time, Oliver and I were both William's apprentices in the same class. However, Oliver claimed poor health and eventually quit to switch advisors. Later, we still ended up together.Until the poisoning incident, I ha

The case's aftermath was completely predictable. Faced with the ironclad evidence recorded by Hummingbird, Oliver and Sonia completely broke down as they confessed to all their crimes. They faced multiple charges and were prosecuted, with lengthy prison sentences awaiting them. Terry Medical Technology was also investigated for numerous illegal operations, and its stock price plummeted. As a result, the company teetered on the brink of bankruptcy.Meanwhile, my parents seemed to age 20 years overnight. They waited outside my apartment door, apologizing repeatedly. They cried and begged for my forgiveness while pleading for me to come home."Amelia, we were wrong! We're so sorry!" "You're our only daughter now. Please come home with us, okay?" I looked at their aged faces, feeling neither hatred nor love in my heart, only numbness. I said calmly, "You lost a daughter, but I never truly had a home. Also, regarding your gift of 50% of Baxter Group shares, I refuse to accept it. Fur

The truth was finally revealed to the world. This twist was so shocking that the entire venue, as well as the internet, fell into an eerie silence.Dad, the refined professor who had always taken pride in his family, trembled violently when he heard the final truth. He suddenly spat out a mouthful of blood and collapsed backward. Mom let out an inhuman scream and fainted as well. The scene erupted into chaos. Thankfully, police quickly took control of the situation. They then handcuffed Oliver and led him away, while medical personnel rushed forward to treat my parents.Meanwhile, Sonia, who had just seemed so pitiful, now had all the color drained from her face. "Amelia, why didn't you just die in the countryside?" She screamed, struggling to lunge at me from her wheelchair. However, her weak body gave up and caused her to fall to the ground in a pathetic heap. Police moved in to restrain her as well.I stood quietly on the stage like a lonely statue. The lead officer approa

"Impossible… This can't be real…" Dad murmured under his breath as tears streaked down his face.I watched them fall apart, yet I felt nothing. The officers immediately restrained Oliver and the executives from Terry Medical Technology. Suddenly, Mom lunged at me like a madwoman. She grabbed my arm, sobbing and pleading, "Amelia! Please let Sonia go! She made a mistake and didn't know what she was doing! Oliver must have deceived her! Please, just let her off this once!" She and Dad prepared to get down on their knees before me again. Just like a few days ago, they had the same posture and expressions. Everything was identical. The one difference was that they weren't begging me to save someone's life, but to let a criminal go free. I stared at them, and suddenly, I found it all laughable. "Let her go? You think this is where it ends?" I asked, slowly and deliberately. My words stunned everyone. Could there be an even more horrifying truth?I closed my eyes and took a dee

I explained calmly, "Remember that surgical simulator I was playing with in the office before my vacation? I wasn't practicing. I was performing final program calibration on a miniature surgical robot that I'd modified. "It's called Hummingbird. It's only 0.2 inches in diameter, and it was Prof. McKenna's final concept before he died. I finished what he started."I continued, "On the day of surgery, it was mixed in with the regular instruments and sent into the operating room. It has its own independent 4K imaging recording and data analysis module that captured everything from that surgery, and it's the absolute truth."My words plunged the entire venue into dead silence. Everyone stared at the screen in shock, watching the footage transmitted back by Hummingbird. In the video, Oliver's hands were shaking badly during the critical steps. With one cut, he was about to sever an important blood vessel. At that crucial moment, a clear, calm voice came through his tiny earpiece. "Id

For a moment, time seemed to stand still in the entire conference hall. Everyone looked at me as if I were completely insane. They all wondered why I was calling the police on myself and if I was pulling some kind of stunt.Sonia's and Oliver's smiles froze completely, and my parents' faces also showed expressions of disbelief. However, I ignored their shock and turned to the police. Then, I swept my gaze across the entire venue, my voice calm and clear."I'm filing a formal report that my sister Sonia Baxter, my ex-boyfriend Oliver Lyons, and Terry Medical Technology conspired to poison me over a long period and attempted to steal my patented technology." My words brought the chaos in the venue to a new peak. Sonia screamed, "You're lying! You're the one who poisoned me! The evidence is solid!""I poisoned you?" I let out a cold laugh and requested Edward to pull up the surgery footage. Then, I added, "Relax. I suggest we all take a look at Oliver's miracle surgery. Let's s
