Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Human Instrumentality Project
Half an hour later, a Rolls-Royce Phantom glided to a stop in front of a hillside manor. After getting out of the car, I stared at the brightly lit manor in front of me, feeling like it'd been a lifetime since I last saw this place.

For the past three years, in order to be with Marvin, I'd almost cut myself off from my family entirely.

The moment Mom saw me, she swiftly rushed over. Holding my hands, she looked me up and down, her eyes slowly reddening.

"My precious Evelyn, you've finally come to your senses! I knew from the moment I laid eyes on Marvin that he wasn't a good man. His gaze was calculating and full of schemes! He didn't have an ounce of sincerity in him."

Dad sighed before handing me a cup of warm water. "Your mom's right. You were so madly in love with him before that we couldn't say too much about it. We didn't want to push you away. It's good that you've finally seen through him yourself."

I gripped the warm cup, my throat tightening.

He was right. I'd finally seen Marvin's true colors, but it'd come at the cost of having wasted three years of my love and devotion.

To prove to everyone that Marvin loved me for who I was and not for my money, I'd pretended to be an ordinary woman from an average background. But even while I kept that act up for three years, I never let him suffer. In fact, I paid for all of his expenses.

Not long ago, I'd even convinced my parents to agree to let me marry him. My plan was to tell him the truth on his birthday and give him the deed to three buildings as a token of my love and commitment to him.

But now…

Mom looked at me and changed the subject. "What's done is done. It's in the past now. I found someone new for you. He's perfect in every way, including his family background, his looks, and even his character. Marvin doesn't even come close to holding a candle to him!"

"Mom, for the time being, I don't want to—"

"You have to meet him!" Mom remained firm. "You won't regret meeting the man I chose for you!"

Seeing that I was still hesitant about it, Dad said, "Just meet the guy. Think of it as making a new friend. Your mom has spent so much time worrying about you, you know."

At their insistence, I had no choice but to agree to the blind date.

"Fine. I'll go. Who is it anyway?"

But Mom chose to keep me in suspense. With a meaningful smile, she said, "Oh, you'll see when the time comes. I promise it's going to be a happy surprise!"

The next day, I headed to the mall in the city center, which was the location Mom gave me for the blind date. After parking the car, I walked toward the restaurant while texting her to grumble about how cliché the spot for the blind date was.

I was still typing away with my head lowered when a familiar voice rang out in front of me. "It's only been a day since we broke up, Evelyn, and you couldn't help tailing me already?"

I looked over and saw Camellia clinging to Marvin's arm as she eyed me with a mocking smile. Snorting, she stepped forward to stand in front of Marvin.

"I'm warning you, bitch. A broke wench like you should know your place. Marv is my man now. If you even try to pester him, don't blame me for not showing you any mercy!"

I couldn't be bothered to waste my breath on them, so I tried to move past them. However, Marvin doggedly followed after me, commenting sarcastically, "Evelyn, I know you're still hung up on me, but we're worlds apart now.

"Look at you! Even after we've broken up, you're still wearing the same shabby clothes you got from some random thrift store. Meanwhile, look at what Cammy got me. This watch alone is worth more money than you can possibly make in a lifetime. Knowing your place is a crucial part of life, you know?"

He flexed the Rolex on his wrist with an air of superiority.

At my silence, Camellia assumed that I was feeling hurt and crushed, which only made her even more smug.

She linked arms with Marvin again and announced loudly, "Marv and I are getting married at The Haven Hotel on the eighth of this month. Don't you dare show up, and don't bother sending us a gift either. We don't need poor people sullying our wedding.

"And stop pestering him so shamelessly. Give it up, Evelyn!"

The wound on my arm was pretty deep, but fortunately, it was just a flesh wound. After getting it bandaged at the hospital, I immediately called my lawyers."File a criminal lawsuit against Marvin for assault," I instructed. "Make sure he goes to prison. I want him to pay heavily for what he has done."Nathan's father also heard that his son had nearly been attacked and was outraged. He mobilized every connection at his disposal to ensure that Marvin would face the full force of the law. With both the Gray and Lloyd families coming down on Marvin, his fate was sealed.Yet, just when I thought it was all over, an even more absurd piece of news reached my ears.On the grounds of mental illness, Marvin had been granted bail while awaiting his trial—and the first thing he did after being released was to find Camellia. The two former "lovers" got into a violent argument the moment they saw each other. Marvin pinned all of the blame on Camellia. He said he never would've broken up with

I paid no further attention to Marvin, focusing entirely on my relationship with Nathan and my own career as well.Soon, it was Nathan's birthday. I booked out the rooftop restaurant at The Haven Hotel just to throw a lavish birthday party for him.Nathan attended the party wearing the suit I had custom-made for him. He looked more handsome than words could describe. As I stared at him, my heart filled with a sense of happiness and satisfaction that I'd never known before. In front of all our friends and family, I took out the ring I'd prepared. "Happy birthday, Nathan. Although we haven't been together long, I already know for a fact that you're the man I want to spend the rest of my life with. Will you marry me?"Tears of joy welled up in his eyes. He nodded firmly. "Yes."Smiling, I slid the ring on his finger and hugged him.But the moment of warmth and happiness was shattered by a furious howl."I won't allow you to marry him, Evelyn!"Everyone turned to see Marvin chargin

On the way back, Nathan was still fuming. "I can't believe how shameless Marvin is! The nerve of him to expect you to bear the consequences for the choices he made!"I laughed, ruffling his hair gently. "Relax. They've also just started getting what's coming for them."Nathan huffed, but his expression softened slightly. The wedding fiasco had made Camellia and Marvin the laughingstock of our social circle. Now that the Houghs weren't getting the buyout payment, their creditors began hounding them for money. The day after the debacle, Marvin called me. The moment I took the call, he cried out desperately, "Evie, you have to help my family! We're really in huge trouble now!"Frowning, I dropped the call, but he soon called me with another number."We really owe five million dollars this time! My dad heard about Camellia's family getting the buyout payment, so he invested every bit of our family savings into the stock market. He even borrowed from loan sharks, but now it's all gone

A man who bore a striking resemblance to Camellia burst into the hotel lobby, fuming, with a sharply dressed middle-aged man trailing behind him."Dad! You're here just in time. The buyout payment will be coming through soon, right? This guy here lied to me, saying that the redevelopment project has been called off!" Camellia cried out.But her father, Albert Hough, raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face. The crisp sound echoed in the lobby, silencing everyone else."You ignorant fool! Do you have any idea who you've offended?" Albert snarled.Camellia clutched her stinging cheek, looking completely dumbfounded. "Dad! Why did you hit me?"Marvin rushed forward to shield her. "How can you slap Cammy, Mr. Hough? What did we do wrong?"Albert didn't even bother looking at Marvin. Instead, he turned to the middle-aged man behind him and pleaded, "Mr. Wilkins, you see… this is just a big misunderstanding! That useless daughter of mine was just too ignorant. Please don't

Nathan's words made all the color drain from Marvin's face. He didn't expect someone to publicly expose the lie he'd come up with to break up with me."S-Stop lying! I did no such thing!" he shot back.Snorting, Nathan pulled out a stack of documents from his briefcase. "I'm lying, you say? I had my people look into this matter. Your parents' bank statements look perfectly normal. They aren't in any debt."You, on the other hand… Throughout the three years you were with Evie, you were happily spending her money while sneaking around with your so-called childhood friend. It's clear for all to see who the real bastard and cheater is."Marvin lost it at the fact that Nathan had revealed his dirty deeds to everyone. He decided to drop the act and go all out, howling, "Yeah! That's right! I lied to her! So what?"A broke bitch like her deserves to be played! What did I ever get when I was with her? She couldn't give me anything, so why should I subject myself to suffering with her? She

The middle-aged man's respectful manner toward me stunned everyone in the hotel lobby. All of the mocking chatter died out on the spot. However, despite seeing how the man turned to me with the utmost respect, Marvin simply chortled. "I really underestimated you, Evelyn."Jabbing a finger at me, he continued, "You think I'd believe that you're somebody important just because you hired some random guy to put on a show with you?"You're a broke bitch who can't even afford a designer brand! Am I supposed to believe you're what, the CEO of a company or something? You think you're the main character in one of those revenge novels?"After giving me a thorough once-over, Marvin wiped the tears that formed from laughing so hard and mocked, "Stop daydreaming, Evelyn."Not quite sure what to believe, the guests around us exchanged looks."Is it really just an act?""I don't think so… That middle-aged man does look like a manager at some company…"Camellia's face was a little pale, but Ma
