Chapter 4

Author: Trimeow
Morgan went to the cafeteria alone. She barely tasted the food as she forced a few bites down and headed straight to the admin office to process her withdrawal.

When she gave her reason as “studying abroad,” the administrative staff showed brief regret over her previously excellent grades. Still, with the photo scandal circulating across campus and the plagiarism accusation that had just erupted, their response remained purely procedural. There was no real attempt to persuade her to stay.

“Withdrawal approval will take a few days to process,” the administrative staff said. “During that time, you’re expected to attend classes as usual.”

“Thank you,” Morgan replied softly, her expression blank.

She moved through the rest of the day like a walking corpse. When the final bell rang, she hugged her books to her chest and followed the crowd out. As she passed the small campus garden, she noticed a group of students running in one direction, their voices buzzing with excitement.

“Quick, quick! There’s a fight up ahead!”

“Oh my God, it’s Dean! I’ve never seen the campus heartthrob so angry!”

“He’s fighting for Hazel! A classic case of rage for love!”

Morgan stopped in her tracks. Her heart felt like it had been pricked by a fine needle, not enough to bleed but enough to hurt. Without fully understanding why, she followed them ahead. Sure enough, a small crowd had formed. At the center, Dean was locked in a vicious fight with another male student.

Dean was usually cold, restrained, and always composed. Now, as if someone had crossed his boundaries, his movements were brutal and unrelenting, every punch landing hard. That stunning, untouchable face was twisted with a fury few had ever seen.

Fragments of conversation drifted into her ears.

“I heard that guy confessed to Hazel, got rejected, and then tried to get handsy…”

“Dean is normally so calm. Who knew he’d actually throw punches?”

“But isn’t Morgan his girlfriend? Why is he fighting so hard for Hazel?”

“Tsk, you don’t get it? With those photos of Morgan going around, how could Dean ignore them? He probably got sick of her ages ago…”

Morgan listened quietly. She thought her heart had turned numb, but those words still stirred something painful within her.

Just then, Hazel squeezed through the crowd, looking like a startled fawn. Crying, she rushed forward and wrapped her arms around Dean from behind.

“Dean, stop fighting! I’m scared… Please, stop…”

Dean froze. He released the battered student and turned around. The violent air around him vanished almost instantly, replaced by a gentleness so awkward and careful that Morgan had never seen it before.

He wiped Hazel’s tears with deliberate tenderness, his voice low and soft. “Don’t be afraid. I’ve stopped. Did I scare you?”

Like poison, that level of tenderness and devotion Dean showed shattered the very last illusion Morgan had been clinging to. He had never looked at her like that or spoken to her in that tone. Even during the most intimate moments between them, he had been so repulsed that he let his younger brother take his place.

How blind had she been to believe he ever liked her?

At that moment, Dean’s gaze swept over the crowd and met Morgan’s. He froze again, clearly not expecting to see her there. A flicker of complicated emotion surfaced in his eyes so fast that even he did not seem aware of it.

His lips parted. It seemed like he wanted to say something, but Morgan looked away first. As if she had merely seen an irrelevant stranger, she turned around and left, her face expressionless.

Dean stared at her, his brows knitting unconsciously.

“Dean, what’s wrong?” Hazel asked softly, leaning against him.

“Nothing,” he replied, withdrawing his gaze. His tone returned to its usual gentleness, yet the unease in his chest refused to fade.

He pulled out his phone and sent a message to Jake, briefly explaining the argument with Morgan and the fight earlier, telling him to comfort her later that evening.

Jake replied quickly. [Why bother comforting her? Just break up with her.]

Dean stared at the message, his fingers pausing mid-air.

Right. Why should he bother? However, he could not quite explain it to himself. After a moment of silence, he typed a justification that sounded reasonable enough:

“Hazel hasn’t been offered a place in grad school yet. The act has to be convincing. Morgan’s emotionally unstable. If she makes a scene and it affects Hazel, it’ll be troublesome.”

Jake responded immediately. [Got it. I’ll go back tonight and handle it.]

That night, Morgan returned to the apartment, exhausted both mentally and physically. She lay down early, closing her eyes almost as soon as her head hit the pillow.

Not long after, she heard movement at the door. Jake was back.

“Morg, why are you asleep so early today?” He leaned close, his voice carrying its usual careless intimacy.

Morgan faced away from him, her voice flat. “Nothing. I’m tired.”

He caught the coldness in her tone and wrapped his arms around her from behind, slipping easily into his familiar role. He repeated the same polished explanations about the assignment and the fight, using the same hypocritical logic as always.

She listened numbly as she thought about how flawless the brothers' act was, with one hurting her and the other comforting her. She closed her eyes, unwilling to say another word.

Seeing her remain silent, Jake leaned in out of habit, brushing kisses along her neck, his hands beginning to wander.

Dean and Jake knelt on the cold, damp floor, staring at the door that would never open for them again, as if their very souls had been drained away. After that night, the two brothers collapsed under the weight of despair.Dean returned to Lyon Corporation. He became even more silent and distant than before, colder than anyone could bear. He threw himself into work with reckless abandon, practically living at the office, filling every second of his days with endless meetings and tasks to numb a heart that had long since gone barren. He became a perfect machine of work: decisive, ruthless, and merciless. Under his leadership, Lyon Corporation expanded further, amassing greater wealth and influence. However, he shared it with no one. He rejected all arranged matches and introductions, and any woman who tried to get close was met with cold indifference. His world shrank to numbers, endless paperwork, and relentless corporate battles. He never married.Jake, on the other hand, went to t

  • Scattered on the Wind   Chapter 22

Dean and Jake had exhausted every method they could think of, from power play to material temptation, humble pleas, obsessive pursuit, and even self-destructive displays meant to win pity. Every single attempt shattered against the fortress Morgan had built with coldness and indifference, leaving behind nothing but wreckage and a deeper sense of despair. In the end, they ran out of strength. They were finally forced to face a truth they had refused to acknowledge: they had lost her forever, not because she was cruel, but because they themselves had crushed whatever faint possibility of affection once existed, along with her dignity and her life, under the weight of the past.On a drizzly evening, Dean parked his car at the street corner across from Morgan’s apartment. He did not get out right away. Instead, he sat there, staring through the rain-blurred window at the warm light glowing from her apartment. He dialed a number he had been blocked from—one he had still tried to call coun

Jake, though, switched to a far more suffocating tactic. He stopped sending flashy, over-the-top gifts and instead began playing the “deeply devoted” card. Every single day, without fail, he appeared below Morgan’s office and, later, outside her apartment. Rain or shine, he stood there holding a lunchbox he claimed to have made himself. He no longer caused scenes or raised his voice. Instead, he watched her in silence, his eyes heavy with pain and longing, as if she were the heartless one who had betrayed him.Once, after Morgan ignored him, he suddenly slammed his fist into the wall beside him. The skin on the back of his hand split open instantly, blood pouring down. He then walked over to her car, raised his bleeding hand in front of her car, and asked hoarsely, “Morg… if I do this… will you at least look at me? Just once…”Sitting inside the car, Morgan stared at his self-harming, attention-seeking madness. Her stomach churned violently with nausea and fear. She immediately loc

The international arrivals hall was packed, a constant tide of people flowing through the exit. Morgan emerged from the crowd, pushing her suitcase. She wore a simple off-white trench coat, her posture straight, her expression cool and distant.Three years had stripped away the last traces of youth from her face, replacing them with composure and maturity. She was even more striking now, yet that beauty felt far out of reach. She had barely stepped back onto her homeland and taken in a breath of familiar air when two groups suddenly closed in from opposite directions, like sharks catching the scent of blood, blocking the exit in front of her.On the left stood Dean. He was dressed in an expensive, tailor-made suit, tall and handsome as ever. However, between his brows lingered exhaustion, along with an almost greedy urgency he could not fully conceal. In his hands was a large bouquet of white flowers which meant devotion, repentance, and faithful love.He looked at her with a gaze

The first time she aimed the spray at him, his entire body froze. Disbelief flashed across his face, followed by raw hurt and crushing frustration.Jake, however, reacted far more intensely than Dean. He was volatile and unhinged in a way that only grew worse with time. At moments, he would lower himself completely; he would beg her in tears, apologizing over and over while slapping his own face, rambling about how deeply he regretted everything and how he had truly fallen in love with her. Then, at other times, her cold indifference would push him to lose control, smashing furniture. He would even drag her away by force when she was simply interacting normally with classmates, sparking panic and more than one call to the police. He went even further. Leveraging the Lyons’ influence, he pressured Morgan’s university and her landlord, attempting to cut off her social circle and financial lifelines entirely, all to force her into submission. The two brothers quickly came to see each

After settling the breakup, Dean returned to the company immediately. He handled every urgent issue at top speed and then gave his assistant an order. “Book the earliest flight to Lindt. Push back everything on my schedule.”At that moment, he had only one wild, urgent thought: to find Morgan immediately. He could not tolerate Jake lurking at her side. Even less could he accept the possibility of losing her completely.During the ten-hour-long flight, Dean did not sleep at all. His mind replayed countless scenarios on repeat; anxiety, tension, and a strange, unfamiliar feeling close to panic burned through his nerves. As soon as the plane touched down, he did not even bother to stop at a hotel. Using the address his people had verified, he ordered the driver straight to Morgan’s apartment.By dusk, the streets of Lindt were bathed in warm, golden light. When Dean’s car came to a stop downstairs, he spotted a familiar yet lonely figure leaning against a streetlamp. It was Jake.Almo
