Aria

I knew that there were other creatures who roamed the earth except for normal werewolves. Take Kaiden for example, he was a werewolf with his shadows, and the Venegans who were also werewolves but possess a whole lot of powers according to history. As for the sorcerers, some of them were pack shifters and the others were not. Even when I discovered the wolgons, they were amazing creatures though they could be used as a weapon of destruction.

But never for once had I thought of anything such as the shapeshifter. And it terrifies me more than I would have ever been with a wolgon. What do you mean there's a creature who can transform into anybody it wants? This meant I could be speaking with someone close to me, without knowing that a shapeshifter has taken their form. The mere thought of it sent shivers down my spine.

“Focus Princess, focus.” Brienne walked out of the bathroom.

We had decided to keep the shapeshifter hidden in her room. Her initial idea was to let Kaiden know about

  • Scent of Betrayal   THE DARKHEAVEN'S HEIRLOOM

Kaiden“We finally meet, son.” Loretta smiled sweetly. It felt absurd hearing the word son from her lips. I had imagined this meeting countless times, wondering what I’d feel—anger, sadness, maybe closure. But now that it was happening, I felt nothing. Not even hate.In the end, everyone made selfish choices—no matter who got hurt.Loretta had chosen to leave my father because she couldn’t bear to be mated to a rogue. She hadn’t wanted his child—me, either. All the years I’d spent searching for her were for one reason alone—the shadows. My father, Jace Darkhaven, never possessed them. He always said they came from her—meaning there were other wolves out there with shadows too, probably related to her. Yet, in all my years of searching, I’d never found a single one.“Well…I know you’re not exactly pleased to see me, son.” Her tone was light, almost teasing. “But you’ll have to bear with it. My husband needs me here if you want to win against the army of the dead.” She hooked her arm ar

  • Scent of Betrayal   MOTHER DEAREST

KaidenVincent had insisted I give him a tour of the pack. He claimed he needed to pick strategic spots to station his sorcerers for when the army of the dead attacked. So far, no new reports have surfaced about them. After attacking one more pack in the north, it was as if they had vanished into thin air. But I wasn’t fooled—silence always came before a storm. Something bigger was definitely coming. We had barely finished scouring Fitcher when I stumbled upon the last person I expected to see—Aria. Her back was turned to me, but I recognised her. Her figure was imprinted in my head. Her golden hair pulled into a neat bun that revealed her slender, pale neck with the temporary mark on it. She wore a long yellow dress that swayed lightly with the breeze. The magistrate of Fitcher, Matt, stood beside her, grinning like an idiot. For some reason, that grin irritated me. But I wasn’t the only one watching her. Vincent’s gaze lingered on her too, which only worsened my mood. The coin maste

  • Scent of Betrayal   PUTTING ON THE PERFECT ACT

Aria“That’s a strange thing for you to say, sire.” I forced a smile, praying my heartbeat wouldn’t give me away. I had no idea what kind of powers he possessed.“Why do you say so, Milady? Your features are quite similar to what Venegans would look like,” he pressed. My palms grew sweaty, and I fought the urge to glare at him. Why did it feel like this man knew something?“Because it’s no news that the Venegans ceased to exist after the great War,” I replied calmly, shifting my gaze to Kaiden. He stood beside the man, silent and his face neutral. What was I expecting? For him to protect me like he had when I first arrived from Calais? He had changed…or maybe he was finally showing his true self.Carla, on the other hand, stayed quiet, too quiet—watching me like a hawk waiting for me to slip so she could throw me to the wolves. I didn’t buy her earlier act of kindness for a second. But two could play the game.“I’m impressed, Kaiden. Your wife is knowledgeable. I wouldn’t expect less

  • Scent of Betrayal   SUSPICIOUS MOVEMENT

Aria“Carla.” I managed a smile and lifted my chin.“Luna, what a surprise to see you here.”To my surprise, she leaned in and gave me a side hug, one I felt obliged to return. What was with this sudden friendliness?“And she is?” Her gaze flicked to Brienne.“My personal maid and assistant.”“What a dainty little thing,” Carla said, smiling at Brienne.Brienne said nothing, keeping a straight face. She didn’t care if she ended up in the woman’s bad books. I, on the other hand, fought to keep from laughing Brienne was probably murdering her with that stare.“Lady Carla, I would like to see the magistrate of Fitcher,” I said.I wasn’t sure how long Brienne could keep up her facade before lashing out, so I stepped in.“Of course, that would be an honor.” Carla shifted her attention from Brienne to me. “You know, I think the prophecy is slowly coming to pass.”Her sudden sweetness made me suspicious. Either she’d had a change of heart, or she was putting on an act.“Oh really?” I said c

  • Scent of Betrayal   PLAYING LUNA

AriaI sighed in relief the moment he left the room. It seemed he had a way of sucking the air out of me whenever he was around. Kaiden didn’t remember the kiss—not like I’d even call it that. If he did, I’d probably be buried six feet below by now.The truth was, I was attracted to him no matter how hard I tried to stall and deny it. And it was getting worse by the day. I hoped I’d get my wolf and scent faster than expected and be off. The thought of last night kept playing over and over in my head.“Urgh!” I groaned, hitting my head like that would flush the thoughts out.I had freshened up long before he awoke, and Brienne should be here any moment. Then I remembered Kai—how he had shapeshifted into a mosquito right before my eyes. His words echoed in my head; A shapeshifter can take any form for a long time, provided he’s killed the person first. I didn’t think that would ever include a mosquito.A lot had happened, and I ought to have informed Varaeys about Ser Lance. Kai said he

  • Scent of Betrayal   ARRIVAL OF THE SORCERERS

KaidenBright light hit my eyes, and I opened them, sitting up as a pang of headache gripped me. It was already daybreak, and I found that very strange. On a normal day, I would have been awake by the early hours of the morning. Never once had I slept until the sun was up.It was then I noticed other strange things, the bedcover, a light blue color with flowery patterns. This… was certainly not my bed. I sat up properly and looked around the brightly painted room with its neatly arranged curtains. My gaze stopped at the sofa, where a small, wrapped figure lay with a book in her hands and her blonde hair sprawled over—Aria.Wait a minute. How did I get here? What happened last night? The more I tried to remember, the sharper the ache grew. Slowly, the memories began seeping back in, from going to the council with Riven, the knife being hurled, the accusations, speaking with the head council. Sneaking around the council with Riven to find the woman who accused me—we didn’t find her. The
