Chapter 3

Author: Seeking the Deer
“Everyone stand up. You’ll be questioned one by one!”

The exam supervisor and the inspection team members looked furious.

Ms. Zane’s eyes turned red as she desperately tried to explain, “Officer, this is really a misunderstanding!”

She suddenly spun around. Her voice was sharp enough to cut. “Pearl! And all of you! What exactly are you trying to pull?!”

Pearl shrank back as though she had been frightened, biting her lower lip tightly. “Ms. Zane, you did this just to protect your reputation as a distinguished teacher. That’s unfair to all the other students taking the exam! Even if we're taking the exam for money, we still can’t stand what you did!”

Her words sounded righteous and full of conviction. However, the smug curve at the corner of her lips was almost impossible to hide.

The inspection team’s suspicious gazes swept back and forth between us and the other students.

“Are all of you admitting that you’re taking exams for someone else?”

No one answered.

The students looked at each other, avoiding eye contact. They had been brave enough to go along with the lie, but when it came time to actually say it out loud, no one dared to be the first.

Then, Landon stepped forward. He walked to Pearl’s side, gave her an encouraging look, and nodded toward the inspection team.

“I can testify. This exam substitution scheme was organized by Vivian and Ms. Zane.”

He pulled my phone out of his pocket and showed them the call history.

“Look. She was just on the phone with Ms. Zane on the bus. That’s why the roster arrived so quickly. This was all part of a backup plan they prepared in advance.“

Once someone took the first step, the others quickly followed.

“That’s right. We were all brought here by them.

“The top honors class has always relied on us to maintain its reputation.

“Just start driving already. Who takes the exam doesn’t matter, right?”

Ms. Zane stared at the students who had always been obedient and well-behaved. One by one, they had transformed into experienced con artists who had been lying for years. Her face turned pale, then flushed red. Her chest rose and fell violently.

The college entrance exam bus had stopped by the roadside, attracting a crowd of onlookers.

People pointed at the bus. Their faces filled with excitement over the scandal.

“Exam substitutes? They actually dare to cheat on the college entrance exam?

“And it was organized by a teacher? Tsk. Throwing away their morals just for some meaningless reputation.

“People like this don’t deserve to stand alongside hardworking students!”

Insults came from every direction. Ms. Zane had never been cursed like this in her entire life. She crouched on the ground, trembling uncontrollably, repeating her explanation helplessly,

“I didn’t... I really didn’t... They really are the students..."

I took a deep breath when I saw Ms. Zane was close to collapsing from anger and despair. Then, I raised my head and pointed at the screenshot in the inspection team’s hand.

“Miss, chat records can be fabricated. You can check the image layers and editing traces. That will tell you whether it’s real or fake! Besides…”

I paused for a moment, then spoke calmly.

“If we were really organizing an exam substitution scheme, wouldn’t we do everything possible to hide our identities? Would we really be stupid enough to openly change our profile pictures and usernames to our real ones?”

The inspection team members leaned closer to examine the screenshot. Sure enough, they noticed the subtle layering between the profile pictures and the backgrounds.

Just as the exam supervisor’s suspicious gaze shifted toward Pearl, a flash of viciousness crossed her eyes. She suddenly shouted, “Those are flaws she intentionally left behind! She prepared excuses in advance in case she was exposed!”

As though she had finally made up her mind, she forced each word out through clenched teeth, “Since that’s the case, I don’t want to cover for you anymore.

“I have evidence. They already installed signal transmitters on the rooftops of nearby buildings around the exam site. They're used to send answers to the exam substitutes inside the exam rooms. Go check it out. You’ll bust them for sure!”

Landon saw the panic on my face and froze for a moment before finally telling me the whole story. After the results were announced, the entire class cornered Pearl, demanding an explanation. She called everyone to the school rooftop. Then, in front of the entire class, she dropped to her knees. She cried as she begged for forgiveness, then swore she would take responsibility for what she had done. She told everyone that she often worked part-time as a dancer at high-end clubs and had met plenty of successful people through those connections. That day, she brought a man in an expensive suit who claimed to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. The man claimed he did not care about a college degree. He told them that with the brains of a top-ranked class, they would be valuable wherever they went. For anyone unwilling to repeat their senior year, he offered them an immediate position at his company, promising executive roles and seven-figure annual salaries.Landon’s voice was dry and

I opened the class group chat again. There were over 999 unread messages. Every single one was cursing Pearl. It started with simple accusations but gradually turned into vicious, cruel insults. The messages kept shooting upward at an alarming speed, almost without pause.Pearl never replied to a single one.I left the group chat. My phone finally became silent. I did not want to hear anything about anyone from that class ever again.Still, I never expected Landon and his parents to show up at my door. He stood there with his head lowered. Several fresh fingerprints were visible on his cheek. He looked exhausted. It was as though he had not slept properly in days.“Vivian, Landon’s the one who wronged you. I’ll get justice for you.”His father kicked Landon hard enough to send him stumbling backward. “This kid didn’t know any better. We’ve already taught him a harsh lesson!”His mother rubbed her hands together, forcing an exaggerated smile onto her face. “Speaking of which, y

The police car drove away with its lights flashing. Pearl sat in the backseat, curling herself into a ball. The parents still refused to give up. They surrounded the principal and teachers, unwilling to leave. Some offered cigarettes to curry favor. Others wiped away tears, trying to gain sympathy. They were all asking for the same thing.“Can they be given another chance?”On the other side of the school gate, the media crew who had originally set up their equipment to interview the first student to walk out of the exam hall caught wind of the incident and rushed over in a massive crowd.Their cameras were practically shoved into the students’ faces.“Is it true that your entire class pretended to be exam substitutes?”“Why did you frame your teacher and your class president? Did you have some kind of conflict with them before?”“Do you realize you’ve become the biggest scandal of this year’s college entrance exam? What was your purpose? Were you trying to stand out?”One girl

“If this turns out to be because you couldn’t keep your mouth shut again, I won’t let you off.”The last trace of warmth disappeared from Landon’s eyes, and all that was left was a bone-chilling cold.Pearl instinctively stepped backward, only to hit the seat behind her. Her face turned deathly pale as she stammered, “F-Fever isn’t something that happens on a schedule…”She pouted when she saw the suspicion in everyone’s eyes grow stronger. A string of tears rolled down her face. “I... I really don’t feel well. Why are you all being so mean…”Her voice was soft and sugary, just like every other time she acted cute. Yet no one stood up to comfort her this time.Medical staff in white protective suits boarded the bus and began taking throat swabs from everyone one by one. When it was Pearl’s turn, she immediately shrank into her seat, covering her mouth with both hands. Her eyes widened as she blinked innocently. “I-I’m scared it’ll hurt. Could you be gentle?”The moment the medic

Everyone looked at me in shock. I simply smiled at them.Pearl pointed at me, unable to keep up her sweet act anymore. “What do you mean? What do you mean she doesn’t have to take the exam?”Ms. Zane slowly pushed herself up using the back of a seat. She looked at every single one of them. Her eyes were filled with nothing but disappointment. These were the students she had poured three years of effort into raising.“Vivian received a recommendation to a top science and technology institute three months ago.”Her trembling gaze swept across every face in front of her.“She could have stayed home and rested, but she wanted to walk this final stretch with everyone else. She wanted to ride this bus with all of you and arrive at the exam venue together!”Her eyes turned red, and her voice trembled. “She told me that you were all one class, that all of you should hand in your final answers together and see to the perfect end of your high school life. But what about you all?!” Ms. Za

The bus doors were shut, and the windows were sealed. All 36 of us were trapped inside the bus, baking in the early summer heat. At last, someone could not take it anymore and shot to their feet with fury written all over their face.“Pearl, don’t you think you’ve taken this joke way too far? The exam has already started! What the hell are we supposed to do now?”Pearl twisted the hem of her shirt nervously as she stammered, “I-I just wanted everyone to relax a little…”Before she could finish, tears were already streaming down her face.Landon immediately stood up and pulled her into his arms. “That’s enough. We all agreed to this beforehand. How is this Pearl’s fault?"His gaze swept across the bus before settling on me."If anyone’s to blame, it’s Vivian. You're the class president. Weren’t you supposed to keep everyone in line and make sure we stayed on schedule? If you’d reminded us sooner, would things have gotten this bad?”Claire nodded in agreement. “Exactly! What kind
