Chapter 4

Author: Seeking the Deer
The expressions of the inspection team’s members changed instantly. Signal transmitters? This was no childish prank. If it was true, it pointed to a large-scale, organized exam fraud.

Once exposed, it would become the biggest scandal of this year’s college entrance exam.

The exam supervisor immediately called the police and requested that the special police unit conduct a thorough search of the buildings surrounding the exam site.

Ms. Zane suddenly grabbed my arm. She looked as though she had suffered a devastating blow, swaying as though she could collapse at any moment. Yet she stared at me desperately. I understood the plea in her eyes.

I stepped in front of the inspection team’s supervisor. I did my best to keep my voice steady.

“Sir, we really aren’t using exam substitutes. We’re willing to cooperate with the investigation. However, I do have one request.

“No matter what happens, please let the bus continue to the exam site first. Once we arrive, the school can provide all the necessary records to verify our identities. If this turns out to be a misunderstanding, everyone will still be able to make it into the exam hall before the exam begins.”

The moment the police became involved, some of my classmates finally started to panic.

They immediately nodded in agreement.

“Yeah! Let’s head to the exam site first.”

“Please, if we don’t leave now, we’re really going to be late.”

Whether it was because of my calm reasoning or because everyone’s sudden change in attitude seemed suspicious, the exam supervisor’s expression grew complicated.

After reporting the situation to his superiors, he finally nodded at the driver.

“Drive to the venue immediately!”

The bus started moving again.

Gone were the laughter and chatter from before. The entire bus had fallen into a deathly silence.

Those who had eagerly testified against us earlier did not dare say another word. Some kept checking their watches. Some pressed themselves against the windows to see how far we had gone. Others clasped their hands together, whispering prayers under their breath.

Only Pearl remained completely at ease. She swung her legs casually and hummed a cheerful tune.

Landon took one of her earbuds out. “Pearl, don’t you think things have gotten a little out of hand?”

She tilted her head and blinked at him with wide, doe-like eyes. “Landon, are you blaming me?”

He forced a smile and gently ruffled her hair. “No. I’m just worried this might affect your exam.”

“Oh, stop worrying!” She narrowed her eyes and nuzzled against him playfully. “I promise. Once we get to the exam venue, I’ll tell everyone it was just a joke.”

Then, she rose to her feet and smiled brightly at everyone on the bus. “Come on! Let’s sing something and relax before the exam…”

No one responded. Her singing floated awkwardly through the silent bus for only a few seconds before she stopped. A flash of resentment crossed her eyes as she pouted and sat back down.

The moment the bus came to a stop outside the exam venue, a group of heavily armed special police officers rushed aboard. The sudden development caught everyone completely off guard. Panic instantly spread through the bus.

Pearl calmly smoothed out her skirt and put on a sweet smile. “Oh, officers, there’s no need to be so nervous. Nobody cheated or used exam substitutes. We were just joking around!

“There’s really no need to make such a big deal out of this. Why don’t you escort us into the exam hall instead—”

“Sit down!” Before she could finish speaking, one of the officers roughly shoved her back into her seat.

“Everyone! Put your hands on the seat in front of you. No one leaves their seat. No talking. Hand over your phones immediately and wait for inspection!”

Pearl’s expression changed. “Hey! I already told you it was just a joke! What are you even investigating?”

The officer shot her an annoyed look. His expression was grim. “The inspection team reported that you’re suspected of participating in large-scale organized exam fraud. Cooperate with the investigation. Say one more word and we’ll continue this conversation at the police station.”

Pearl immediately went pale and did not dare utter another word. The bus remained parked outside the exam venue, but not a single student got off.

Parents who had been waiting outside stretched their necks anxiously, trying to see what was happening.

They were blocked by the security personnel. Hence, they could not get any information.

The students’ phones began ringing one after another. The officers expressionlessly held down the power buttons and shut them off.

When the officers finally got off the bus carrying a bag filled with confiscated phones, the sound of the exam bell rang across the campus. The college entrance exam had officially begun.

Landon saw the panic on my face and froze for a moment before finally telling me the whole story. After the results were announced, the entire class cornered Pearl, demanding an explanation. She called everyone to the school rooftop. Then, in front of the entire class, she dropped to her knees. She cried as she begged for forgiveness, then swore she would take responsibility for what she had done. She told everyone that she often worked part-time as a dancer at high-end clubs and had met plenty of successful people through those connections. That day, she brought a man in an expensive suit who claimed to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. The man claimed he did not care about a college degree. He told them that with the brains of a top-ranked class, they would be valuable wherever they went. For anyone unwilling to repeat their senior year, he offered them an immediate position at his company, promising executive roles and seven-figure annual salaries.Landon’s voice was dry and

I opened the class group chat again. There were over 999 unread messages. Every single one was cursing Pearl. It started with simple accusations but gradually turned into vicious, cruel insults. The messages kept shooting upward at an alarming speed, almost without pause.Pearl never replied to a single one.I left the group chat. My phone finally became silent. I did not want to hear anything about anyone from that class ever again.Still, I never expected Landon and his parents to show up at my door. He stood there with his head lowered. Several fresh fingerprints were visible on his cheek. He looked exhausted. It was as though he had not slept properly in days.“Vivian, Landon’s the one who wronged you. I’ll get justice for you.”His father kicked Landon hard enough to send him stumbling backward. “This kid didn’t know any better. We’ve already taught him a harsh lesson!”His mother rubbed her hands together, forcing an exaggerated smile onto her face. “Speaking of which, y

The police car drove away with its lights flashing. Pearl sat in the backseat, curling herself into a ball. The parents still refused to give up. They surrounded the principal and teachers, unwilling to leave. Some offered cigarettes to curry favor. Others wiped away tears, trying to gain sympathy. They were all asking for the same thing.“Can they be given another chance?”On the other side of the school gate, the media crew who had originally set up their equipment to interview the first student to walk out of the exam hall caught wind of the incident and rushed over in a massive crowd.Their cameras were practically shoved into the students’ faces.“Is it true that your entire class pretended to be exam substitutes?”“Why did you frame your teacher and your class president? Did you have some kind of conflict with them before?”“Do you realize you’ve become the biggest scandal of this year’s college entrance exam? What was your purpose? Were you trying to stand out?”One girl

“If this turns out to be because you couldn’t keep your mouth shut again, I won’t let you off.”The last trace of warmth disappeared from Landon’s eyes, and all that was left was a bone-chilling cold.Pearl instinctively stepped backward, only to hit the seat behind her. Her face turned deathly pale as she stammered, “F-Fever isn’t something that happens on a schedule…”She pouted when she saw the suspicion in everyone’s eyes grow stronger. A string of tears rolled down her face. “I... I really don’t feel well. Why are you all being so mean…”Her voice was soft and sugary, just like every other time she acted cute. Yet no one stood up to comfort her this time.Medical staff in white protective suits boarded the bus and began taking throat swabs from everyone one by one. When it was Pearl’s turn, she immediately shrank into her seat, covering her mouth with both hands. Her eyes widened as she blinked innocently. “I-I’m scared it’ll hurt. Could you be gentle?”The moment the medic

Everyone looked at me in shock. I simply smiled at them.Pearl pointed at me, unable to keep up her sweet act anymore. “What do you mean? What do you mean she doesn’t have to take the exam?”Ms. Zane slowly pushed herself up using the back of a seat. She looked at every single one of them. Her eyes were filled with nothing but disappointment. These were the students she had poured three years of effort into raising.“Vivian received a recommendation to a top science and technology institute three months ago.”Her trembling gaze swept across every face in front of her.“She could have stayed home and rested, but she wanted to walk this final stretch with everyone else. She wanted to ride this bus with all of you and arrive at the exam venue together!”Her eyes turned red, and her voice trembled. “She told me that you were all one class, that all of you should hand in your final answers together and see to the perfect end of your high school life. But what about you all?!” Ms. Za

The bus doors were shut, and the windows were sealed. All 36 of us were trapped inside the bus, baking in the early summer heat. At last, someone could not take it anymore and shot to their feet with fury written all over their face.“Pearl, don’t you think you’ve taken this joke way too far? The exam has already started! What the hell are we supposed to do now?”Pearl twisted the hem of her shirt nervously as she stammered, “I-I just wanted everyone to relax a little…”Before she could finish, tears were already streaming down her face.Landon immediately stood up and pulled her into his arms. “That’s enough. We all agreed to this beforehand. How is this Pearl’s fault?"His gaze swept across the bus before settling on me."If anyone’s to blame, it’s Vivian. You're the class president. Weren’t you supposed to keep everyone in line and make sure we stayed on schedule? If you’d reminded us sooner, would things have gotten this bad?”Claire nodded in agreement. “Exactly! What kind
