Christine’s POV

“What the hell is going on here?” Francis demanded.

I straightened, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “Lisa was sitting in my chair, acting like she owns my office. I asked her to leave, and she refused.”

Lisa’s eyes widened in sob, her lips parting in a dramatic gasp. “Asked? You practically threw me out of it, Christine!”

Francis stepped forward, extending a hand to help Lisa steady herself. She took it, her fingers lingering on his arm as she shot me a venomous glare. “This is unacceptable, Christine,” he said, his tone measured but firm. “Hurting her won’t solve anything.”

My jaw tightened, but I didn’t argue. He was grabbing her arm and had been impulsive, a flare of frustration I couldn’t contain. Francis guided Lisa toward the door, his hand resting lightly on her back. “Come on, let’s get you out of here.”

As they disappeared down the hall, a strange thought flickered through my mind. Francis’s protective gesture, the way Lisa leaned into him… could this

  • Second Chance At Rebirth: Beneath The Ashes   Chapter 45

Christine’s POVThe day dragged on after my conversation with Lisa, her probing questions about Francis. I brushed her off with a vague answer about an “incident,” keeping my tone clipped to shut down further inquiries. Her eyes lingered on me a moment too long, but she didn’t push. Good. I didn't have her time. After wrapping up at the office, I decided to check on the renovations at Cristainternational myself. As I grabbed my keys and headed for the parking lot, a memory flickered filled my thoughts about Evelyn and I spotting Francis a few days ago kissing a woman I didn’t recognize, leaning toward him, her hand brushing his arm. Francis had looked… engaged. The fake loyal Francis I knew. The image gnawed at me, twisting my gut with something I refused to name. Before I could second-guess myself, I veered my car toward Francis’s office instead of the renovation site. The Zentara Tech company building stood before me as I entered. Francis’s office was on the fifth floor, and I st

Christine’s POVThe next day, the morning sun sliced through the blinds of Francis’s apartment through the window, casting lines across his bruised face as he lay on the bed, still out cold from the painkillers I’d given him. His chest rose and fell unevenly, a faint wheeze escaping his lips. The sight of him stirred something like regret in me, but I shoved it down. He deserved it. No time for sentiment. I had work to do.“Francis,” I called, nudging his shoulder. He groaned, eyes fluttering open weekly. “Don’t bother going to work today. You’re in no shape for it. Rest.”He tried to sit up, wincing as he clutched his side. “Christine, I’m fine. I can…”“No, you’re not,” I snapped, cutting him off. “Stay here. That’s a simple instruction.” I grabbed my coat, slung my purse over my shoulder, and headed for the door before he could argue. The last thing I needed was him playing hero again. If he does, I’ll make sure what happens to him will be worse than this. The drive to the office

  • Second Chance At Rebirth: Beneath The Ashes   Chapter 43

Christine’s POVMy heart slammed against my ribs. The cool night air I’d sought for relief now felt like ice clawing at my skin. The three men loomed even closer. The one with the gun, a wiry guy with a scar slicing through his left eyebrow kept it sorely trained on me.“Don’t move,” he growled again, his voice a low rasp. “And don’t even think about screaming for security. You do, and I shoot. Got it?”I nodded, my throat too tight to speak. My legs trembled, threatening to buckle, but I locked my knees to stay upright. The second man, broader and bald, stepped forward, his meaty hand outstretched. “Walk over here. Slowly. Bring your purse.”My fingers tightened around the strap of my leather purse. It was just a purse. But the way they stared at me, like predators sizing up prey, made my stomach churn. I took a shaky step forward, then another. The third man, lean and twitchy, kept glancing around. “Purse. Now,” the bald one barked.I was close enough to smell their stale cigarette

Christine’s POVLisa smirked, her arms still crossed.“Or maybe you’re just angling to steal my position.”She threw her head back and laughed. “Oh, Christine, you’re so dramatic. Steal your position? Please. All good things come to those who wait.” Her eyes glinted with something unreadable. I clenched my jaw, refusing to give her the satisfaction of a response. Turning on my heel, I strode back to my office, her laughter trailing behind me. The glass door clicked shut as I entered, sealing out the noise of the laugh. Sinking into my chair, I stared at the desk, cluttered with papers and my still-silent phone. And then my fingers hovered over my phone before I dialed Grandpa’s number. He picked up on the second ring. “Christine, how’s it going?” He asked.I exhaled. “I want to talk to the board, lay everything out.”He didn’t hesitate. “Of course. You’re doing the right thing, taking charge. I’ll call the board myself.”“Thank you, Grandpa.”The call ended. The rest of the day b

  • Second Chance At Rebirth: Beneath The Ashes   Chapter 40

Christine’s POVThe dining room fell into a tense hush as Lisa’s words hung in the air.Grandfather Fredrick’s eyes burned cold as he set his fork down with deliberate force. His voice, cutting through the silence.“Why didn’t you tell me about this, Christine?”I met his gaze, keeping my expression steady. I’d known about the hate online for days, snarky comments, veiled criticisms, and a few viral threads tearing into the company’s new direction. Finally, I replied.“I am certain it was orchestrated, Grandfather,” I said, my voice calm but firm. “Some of our competitors must have paid people to criticize us online. It’s nothing we can’t manage.”Lisa smirked, sliding her phone across the table toward me with a flourish. “Oh, really? Then why don’t you take a look at this?”I caught the phone before it slid off the edge of the table, my fingers brushing the cool glass screen. The post was a scathing thread, complete with memes mocking our new logo and hashtags like #EpicFail and #Out
