Christine’s POV

My heels clicked sharply against the floor as I pushed through the door. Lisa’s voice grated against my nerves, and Francis’s curt response did little to ease the knot in my stomach. I didn’t knock.

“What’s going on here?” My voice was calm. I stood in the doorway, arms crossed, my gaze flicking between Lisa, perched on the edge of the couch, and Francis, seated across from her.

Lisa’s head snapped up, her eyes widening for a split second before she recovered, offering a smile. “Christine! I… I didn’t expect you.” She stood, brushing her hands down her skirt. “I came to check on Francis. You said something terrible happened to him, so I thought I could help.”

I raised an eyebrow, my lips curving into a faint, skeptical smile. “Help?” I stepped further into the room, my purse still slung over my shoulder. “Francis has plenty of help, Lisa. Maids are in this house. You don’t need to play nurse.”

Lisa’s cheeks flushed in a smile. “You’re being dramatic, Christine. I’m ju

Christine’s POV“Why do you have to put conditions on going back to your mistress?” I snapped as I glared at him. The audacity of this man, lounging against his desk now, his lips curling into that infuriating smirk. His emotionless eyes were on me as I felt shiver running down my spine. And then he replied. “Christine, if you’re not going to be patient enough to hear my condition, you’re welcome to leave.” he said. “Let Adriana keep thinking you’re the enemy. Let her keep sending you those cute little texts. I’m sure you’ll handle it just fine.”I opened my mouth to fire back, but I looked speechless. Adriana’s text. “I know your secret” still burned in my mind, a splinter I couldn’t pull out. I exhaled sharply, frustration coiling at me. “Fine,” I said. “What’s the condition?”Zane’s smile, predatory and self-satisfied. He took a few steps away, now standing beside the window, his gaze focused on me. “I need you to come with me to an event this weekend. As my date.”What? “Dare?” I

Christine’s POVThe drive back to Harrington from Mr. Vandross’s sleek, glass-walled office felt like an eternity, each mile stretching my nerves in worries. My hands gripped the steering wheel as my mind churned over the cryptic text I’d received earlier. “I know your secret.” The words looped in my head. I couldn’t stop wondering who sent it? What did they know? And I swear I’ll kill Zane if he is involve in this. By the time I pulled into the parking garage at Fredrick’s mansion, the late afternoon sun was dipping low, I sat in my car for a moment, trying to steady my thoughts and clear my head. When I stepped into the apartment, I was shocked to see Adriana was still there, sprawled on the couch, her phone in hand, scrolling aimlessly. Her eyes flicked up to meet mine, and the look she gave me was anything and not friendly. It was cold, almost like she was sizing me up.“You are finally here.” she said, her tone dripping with mock concern as she tossed her phone onto the cushion

  • Second Chance At Rebirth: Beneath The Ashes   Chapter 61

Francis’s POVThe air in my office felt stifling, as I was filled with frustration while I pace back and forth. My fists were balled so tightly my knuckles ached, and every step I took seemed to echo the rage boiling inside me. Christine had gutted me. Twenty thousand? Twenty thousand? My salary slashed to a pittance, a humiliating slap in the face after everything I’d done for this company. For her. I stopped pacing, and glared at the sleek glass desk in the center of the office, tempted to sweep everything off it, papers, pens, the stupid little crystal paperweight I’d always hated, just to feel something other than this suffocating anger. How had it come to this? How had Christine, of all people, managed to treat me like this? I’d been careful, so damn careful, and yet she’d sniffed out the fraud like a bloodhound. My fingers itched for my phone, and before I could stop myself, I yanked it from my pocket and dialed Grandfather Frederick. If anyone could talk sense into her, it was

Christine’s POVFrancis’s fists clenched, his face filled with defiance and desperation. “When did it come to this, Christine?” he asked. “When did we become this?”I stared at him, refusing to let his emotions affect my decision. My fingers gripped the edge of my desk. “It became like this the second you decided to steal, Francis, secretly meeting people.” I said, my voice cutting through his attempt at sentiment. “You made that choice. Not me.” I added. For a moment, I thought he might snap at me and act dominant like he always does. “Christine, please,” he said, stepping closer. “I didn’t mean for it to go this far. You have to believe me. I’ll fix this. Just… don’t do this to me. Don’t cut me off like this.” His words sounded genuine that I almost believed him.I turned away, my gaze fixed on the window. His begging grated against my nerves, each word a reminder of his betrayal. “You’re wasting your breath,” I said coldly, not bothering to look at him. “You admitted to the fraud,

Christine’s POVI didn’t want Adriana to see me. Adriana’s voice mingled with Lisa’s. I was hiding from Adriana because I couldn’t risk her knowing Lisa was related to me and coupled with the fact she had seen me with Zane. If Adriana told Lisa she’d spotted me with him, Lisa would run straight to Grandfather, and the fragile threads of my secret company, CristaInternational, would unravel. Zane knew too much about my plans, and one slip could expose everything.Grandmother Eleanor was still seated on the edge of my bed as she noticed the atmosphere. She tilted her head, her eyes narrowing with that knowing look she always had. “Christine, why don’t you go down there? It’s just Lisa and her friend. You can’t hide in your room all night.”I forced a smile, my mind scrambling for a cover up. “Oh, it’s not that, Grandma. I’m just… exhausted. Work was brutal today, and I’ve got a headache creeping in. I’d rather stay here and rest.” The lie tasted flimsy, but I held my breath, hoping she

  • Second Chance At Rebirth: Beneath The Ashes   Chapter 58

Christine’s POVThe morning sun filtered through my office window at Harrington as I paced. I pressed the intercom button as I dialled Ashley’s number. “Ashley, send in Ruth Martinez from accounting.”A moment later, Ruth, the company’s senior account officer, stepped in. Her hair was pulled into a tight bun, and her expression was cautious, as if she sensed the storm brewing. “You wanted to see me, ma’am?”“Yes” I gestured to the chair across from my desk, leaning back on my own with the calmness I could mutter. “I need you to make some changes to Francis’s compensation as a shareholder.”Ruth’s brow furrowed as she flipped open her clipboard. “Changes? What kind?”“Cut all forms of his salaries and bonuses tied to his shareholder status,” I said, my tone unyielding. “If he’s earning, say, $60,000 monthly, reduce it to $20,000. Effective immediately.”Ruth’s pen froze mid-note. Her eyes widened, darting up to meet mine. “Twenty thousand? Ma’am, are you sure? That’s… drastic. Franci
