Jacob

*

I stood in front of Laurel’s door, my hand hesitating in the air before knocking. It wasn’t hesitation out of fear or uncertainty—at least that was what I told myself. It was just the weight of everything unsaid that hung between us, heavier now than it had ever been. Since the day in the training grounds, when she’d slapped me, Laurel hadn’t gone out of her way to avoid me anymore, but she hadn’t spoken to me either. Not directly. Not willingly.

I knocked twice, the sound echoing down

Jacob*I closed my eyes. At once, my wolf came forward eagerly latching onto the connection left behind by the bite. The mind link formed almost immediately, smoother than it ever had before. It was as if some barrier had been shattered between us.One moment, I was seated on Krista’s bed with her unconscious in my arms. The next, I stood inside a mental replica of her room. Only, this version was stripped bare. There was no bed under my feet, no dresser against the wall, no curtains fluttering by the windows. Just endless empty space shaped vaguely like her chamber, pale and hollow as moonlight.Beside me stood my wolf, massive and dark-furred, his golden eyes narrowed sharply. Although Krista herself remained unconscious in the real world and did not stir in my arms, there came a grumpy voice inside the link. Why are you two bothering me? Krista’s wolf materialized before us.Her silver fur gleamed like fresh snow under the moonlight, her violet eyes fixed upon us with regal annoya

Jacob*Through the pack link, I reached out sharply to Elder Lenore. The connection struck something drowsy and distant at first. Her mind felt fogged with sleep and disoriented. It was possible I had abruptly dragged her from rest. For a second, there was only vague confusion through the link before awareness suddenly sharpened. My Alpha, she said at once, fully alert now. What do you need?Come to Krista’s room immediately.I cut the link before she could ask questions. The silence that followed felt unbearable.Krista remained unconscious against me, limp in my arms. Whatever force had overtaken her earlier had drained every ounce of strength from her body. I adjusted her slightly against my chest, one hand braced carefully against her back while the other brushed damp strands of hair from her face. Her stillness unsettled me. Every few seconds, I found myself checking that she was still breathing, watching the slow rise and fall of her chest like a man afraid the next inhale migh

Jacob*When I opened my eyes, I was no longer in Krista’s room. For one disorienting moment, I thought I was still unconscious and dreaming, because nothing around me made sense. There was no bed beneath me. No walls. No ceiling. No manor. There was only sky. Endless, impossible sky. Night stretched in every direction, vast and infinite, filled with stars so bright they looked alive. I was suspended within it, neither standing nor falling, my body somehow held aloft in the middle of the void. The air around me shimmered faintly silver, like moonlight reflected on water.I went utterly still. My chest no longer burned from Krista’s bite, though I could still remember the sensation vividly enough to make my skin crawl. My breathing sounded unnaturally loud in the stillness. What in the Goddess’s name—Then I looked down. Right where Krista had bitten me, directly above my heart, a thin red cord stretched outward from my chest. No, it was not a cord but a thread. It was so frayed and wo

Jacob*There was a knock on my study door. Without looking up from the reports spread across my desk, I called for the knocker to come in. The door opened only slightly before Serah peeked her head through the gap. “Alpha,” she said softly. I set down the report I had been trying to read and for the past few minutes and looked at her properly. “What is it?”“You said to let you know when Luke left. He’s returned to the schoolhouse,” she informed me. “His break is over.”At once, my thoughts shifted back to Krista’s room, back to the enormous silver wolf sprawled possessively across the bed with her son tucked into her fur. “Did he eat before he returned?” I asked.Serah nodded quickly. “Yes, Alpha.”“Good.” I pushed the reports aside and rose from my desk. The papers slid haphazardly across the wood but I paid them little mind. I had not truly been concentrating on them anyway. Every other line I read dissolved into thoughts of Krista’s wolf, of her hostility and the sheer bitternes

Jacob*Krista’s wolf, meanwhile, seemed wholly unconcerned by my reaction. Using her tail, she nudged Luke gently closer toward her enormous body until the boy was nearly swallowed by silver fur. Luke laughed delightedly and wrapped both arms around her neck in a hug.The sight did something strange to my chest. The wolf lowered her head beside him carefully, protective instinct radiating from her so strongly that even I could feel it. All the hostility she directed at me had vanished for the moment, replaced entirely by tenderness toward the child pressed against her side.Luke tilted his head back to peer up at her. “When will I shift?” he asked eagerly. “Will I look just like you?”There was such innocent excitement in his voice that despite everything weighing on me today, I felt another reluctant smile threaten.“You’ll probably shift for the first time around the age of ten,” I told him. “Until then, nobody knows what your wolf will look like. It stays a mystery.”Luke frowned

Jacob*Curled comfortably amongst the blankets, eyes closed and chest rising slowly, the wolf might have appeared asleep to anyone who did not know better. But I was not deceived. My surprise slowly gave way to concern. What had happened? What could possibly have made Krista feel unsafe enough for her wolf to emerge again so soon after the woods?Behind me, Serah finally caught up, still slightly breathless. “I came to ask Miss Krista what she wanted for a late breakfast,” she explained hurriedly. “And-and when I entered the room, I saw her wolf instead.” Her voice climbed higher with lingering panic.“She hasn’t felt her wolf for years,” Serah continued. “Seeing her here suddenly like this… I didn’t know what to do.”I understood her shock perfectly.Aside from myself, no one knew Krista had managed to shift in the woods earlier. To Serah, who was one of the few aware that Krista’s wolf had simply vanished years ago and never returned, seeing her suddenly sprawled across the bed wou

KristaI watched from a distance as Greta chased after her three boys, her voice carrying on the wind, strained and full of exhaustion. They were darting in every direction, little whirlwinds of energy, their laughter ringing out in the warm afternoon air. It was a familiar scene, one that made me

KristaI stared at my reflection, willing the hollow look in my eyes to fade, forcing my lips to curve into a passable smile. But the result looked as tired and insincere as I felt inside. Tonight, of all nights, I couldn't afford to let my emotions slip through the cracks. Tonight was about duty,

KristaWhat had I expected? That Jacob would magically fall in love with me just because we’d spent a few years married? That he would look at me one day and suddenly see me, really see me, instead of the shadow I’d become in his life?I let out a bitter laugh, though it sounded more like a sob. Wh

KristaAs I entered the house, the door creaked softly behind me, though the faint murmur of activity throughout the manor drowned out any noise I made. Before I could even take another step, one of the maids rushed toward me, her face flushed with anxiety as she fumbled with a small notepad in her
