Krista

*

I woke with a start, my body aching as though I had been trampled by a thousand stampeding wolves. My mind was foggy, heavy, and for a terrifying second, I couldn’t remember where I was. It was dark, so dark that for a moment, panic clawed up my throat. My breaths came quick and sharp as my hands scrambled at the ground beneath me. The rough feel of a pallet registered under my fingertips, but it wasn’t enough to ease my distress.

Where was Luke? Where was Kenan?

I sat up too fast, the

Krista*I took the offered glass back with appreciation. “Thank you.”He lifted his mug slightly toward me in a silent toast. I obliged him with my own and the rims clinked softly together. Then I raised the wine to my lips. The first sip nearly melted the tension from my shoulders instantly. A sigh escaped me before I could stop it. The Alpha looked absurdly pleased with himself.“There,” he said smugly. “You see? Theft occasionally benefits society.”I laughed under my breath again. The blond Alpha studied me openly over the rim of his mug before speaking again. “What brings you out here, Luna Krista?”Then his eyes flicked deliberately toward my wine glass. “Surely it cannot only be the alcohol.”I paused, a bolt of fear suddenly spearing through me. Cautiously, I asked, “How did you know my name?” The man grinned, entirely at ease even as I stared at him warily. “I saw you the evening you arrived,” he said. “And besides, who does not know the Alpha and Luna of the Red Moon pack?”

Krista*Luna Misha’s voice drifted through the terrace again, deceptively casual.“Tell us, Luna Krista,” she said. “Should we consider your return to the Red Moon Pack permanent?”Before I could answer, Luna Bella piped up with false innocence. “Or are you and Alpha Jacob merely playing house for Alpha Magnus’ Final Farewell?”This was a deliberate trap. I could not deny it too quickly or I would sound defensive. Clever.I let the silence stretch just long enough to make them uncomfortable. “You all seem far more interested in my circumstances than I am.”Luna Misha let out a strained laugh. “Perhaps we are,” she admitted. “But who can blame us? It’s quite romantic, really. A former mate returning unexpectedly after all these years.”Romantic? I nearly choked on my wine. As if the mate bond rejection had been some sweeping love story instead of one of the most agonizing experiences of my life.Luna Misha stepped closer. “You should forgive our curiosity,” she continued. “Most wolves

Krista*I could feel eyes tracking them.My wolf snorted. You’re fresh meat now.Ignoring her, I took a slow sip of wine and quietly slipped away from the ballroom before anyone could intercept me. The terrace doors stood open, letting in cool night air. I stepped outside gratefully, the sounds of music and conversation dulling behind me.The fresh air was a relief. I rested my hands lightly against the stone balustrade and looked out over the Nightwalker grounds below.Several wolves danced around a massive bonfire in the courtyard, their movements graceful under the moonlight. Drums pounded steadily while flutes threaded through the night air with haunting sweetness. The fire painted gold across spinning bodies and mourning grey clothes. The contrast was strange. Hours ago, those same wolves had wept openly while watching Alpha Magnus burn upon his funeral pyre. Now they danced, celebrating his life and honoring his passage. There was something beautiful and heartbreaking about it

Krista*Beside me, Jacob leaned slightly closer.“Ready?” he whispered. His breath brushed my ear, warm enough to make my stomach tighten.I lifted my chin and answered lightly, “As I’ll ever be.”Then we stepped into the room together. At once, the chatter reduced enough that I felt the weight of every eye turning toward us.The ballroom was magnificent. Crystal chandeliers hung overhead like dripping stars, their light glittering across marble floors. Wolves in colorful attires clustered in groups under towering arches. Servants threaded silently through the crowd carrying silver trays laden with wine. And every single person was staring at us. At me.I let a beatific smile curve my lips as if I had not noticed, as though I had walked into rooms like this every day for the past two years instead of hiding in a human settlement trying not to be found.A servant passed nearby carrying drinks and Jacob smoothly plucked two glasses of golden wine from the tray before handing one to me.

Krista*A strange ache began to build up in my chest. It crept through me slowly, tightening around my ribs until breathing itself became difficult. In the mirror, Jacob stood behind me, tall and dark and devastatingly handsome, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made heat simmer low in my stomach. The gold necklace gleamed against my throat. His hand still hovered near the nape of my neck from where he had fastened it.We looked…like mates. Not like two people whose history was littered with heartbreak and ruin. Not like a woman planning to leave him in a few weeks. Not like a man who had once shattered her so completely she had nearly died from it.The sight hurt. I turned away from the mirror abruptly before the ache inside me could swell into something unbearable.“I just need a minute,” I said quickly. “Then I’ll be ready.”I felt him move closer and a second later, soft lips brushed the back of my neck.My mouth opened in a soundless gasp. The kiss was featherlight but

Krista*I turned this way and that in front of the mirror, observing the bun I’d put her hair in. It was an elegant style I had spent the last few minutes perfecting and as I scrutinized myself, I found my appearance satisfactory. The style made me look regal, and that was exactly what I was going for.I had no doubt all eyes would be on me as I and Jacob mingled with the other werewolf nobility and in light of her disappearance and return to the Red Moon pack, and Laurel's conspicuous absence here tonight, tongues would be wagging. The other wolves would be expecting the old Krista, someone they could pressure. I would make sure not to grant it to them.Carefully, I dragged rouge across my lips, staining them a deep wine red before lining my eyes with kohl. The dark line sharpened my gaze, made my eyes look larger and more severe. I added a touch of blush to my cheeks and leaned back slightly, studying the final effect.I look regal and composed, exactly what I needed tonight. My wo

KristaI stared at my reflection, willing the hollow look in my eyes to fade, forcing my lips to curve into a passable smile. But the result looked as tired and insincere as I felt inside. Tonight, of all nights, I couldn't afford to let my emotions slip through the cracks. Tonight was about duty,

KristaWhat had I expected? That Jacob would magically fall in love with me just because we’d spent a few years married? That he would look at me one day and suddenly see me, really see me, instead of the shadow I’d become in his life?I let out a bitter laugh, though it sounded more like a sob. Wh

KristaAs I entered the house, the door creaked softly behind me, though the faint murmur of activity throughout the manor drowned out any noise I made. Before I could even take another step, one of the maids rushed toward me, her face flushed with anxiety as she fumbled with a small notepad in her

KristaI watched from a distance as Greta chased after her three boys, her voice carrying on the wind, strained and full of exhaustion. They were darting in every direction, little whirlwinds of energy, their laughter ringing out in the warm afternoon air. It was a familiar scene, one that made me
