Ch. 7: Finding My Mate

ALEKSANDR

After dinner with my parents, I head back to the pack house.  I mind-link Dustin on the way and ask him to meet me in my office.  I need to know if he was able to find out any new information about her, and at the very least, I feel like I should let him know what is going on.  I don’t want this to be public knowledge yet, but as my Beta and best friend I can’t keep this from him any longer.  Besides, I will most likely need his help with all of this as well.  I have no idea how this could progress with the limited information my mother gave me.

I walk into the pack house and it’s only 9 pm, but the place is peacefully quiet.  With my wolf hearing I can tell that Dustin’s mate, Drea, is upstairs in their bedroom watching tv.  I head straight to my office where Dustin is already waiting.  He is lounging on the sofa with his head on one end and his feet up on the opposite armrest, but as soon as I walk in, he sits up and gives me a curious look.  I’m sure he is hoping for an explanation on why I want to know about this human.

Dustin begins the conversation. “I spoke with Ian and Davin, but they didn’t have much information on her. She lives down the street where we saw her turn, and she runs through the park regularly.  Sometimes she has the kid in the stroller with her, and sometimes she doesn’t.  Occasionally they have seen her with 3 other children as well.  They don’t remember seeing her with a man.  Apparently, she works as a real estate agent.”

My eyebrows shoot up in surprise with that last bit of information.  Dustin crosses his arm and raises an eyebrow at me as he asks, “Are you going to tell me why we are investigating a human?”

I hesitate as I let this new information sink in.  She is a mom to FOUR children!?!?  I know they said they haven’t seen her with a man, but we don’t make a habit out of paying close attention to humans unless they are causing trouble.  It’s possible that she has a husband, and he works a lot, or doesn’t go out with her and the kids.  Humans often tend to be less close with their families, especially human men.  Some of them work constantly and never spend time with their wives and kids.  I hope, for her sake, that this is not her situation.

I sigh at the continued lack of information I have and then answer Dustin, “She is my second chance mate.”

Dustin’s eyes widen in shock, but he quickly recovers and starts laughing boisterously. “That makes perfect sense!  Wow, this is definitely unusual.” Dustin is talking to himself while he shakes his head in amusement.

I quickly follow up, “For now, this needs to stay between us.  My parents know, and now you, but no one else.  If Ian or Davin ask about it, make up some sort of excuse, but no one else can know about her right now.  That includes Drea.”

“Understood,” he states, “but can I ask why it’s such a big secret? The pack would be happy to know that you have a second chance mate, human or not.”

“First of all, we don’t know if she is in a relationship with anyone.  I would never break up a family for my second chance.  Additionally, my mother seems to think that she has special circumstances, and this will be a slow process of courting her.  She’s looking for more information, and until we know more, I don’t want to make any moves.”  My wolf growls at me over that last statement.

Dustin nods in agreement, “Of course, but you could make a move professionally.  We do need an agent to help us acquire new properties for the pack expansion.  It could also be the perfect way to get to know her and find out more on your own.”

I crack and smile and nod my head, “I was thinking the same thing.  Can we find out where she works so I can reach out to her?”

“I’m on top of it. Do you need anything else from me tonight?” Dustin crosses the room towards the door.

“No,” I answer, “Go and get some rest.  We have a lot of work to do tomorrow. Since no one else knows about her, I’m going to need a lot of help from you on this.”

“Thanks Alpha, Drea will be waiting for me.  Goodnight.”

As Dustin walks out the door I decide to sort through more paperwork, but my mind is too distracted right now thinking about my new mate.  After about 15 minutes of getting nothing done, I decided to call it a night on the paperwork.  I contemplated heading to bed early, but my wolf is too hyped up and all he wants to do is go find our mate.  I decide to go for a run, but instead of letting my wolf out, I run in my human form.  I can’t trust him to stay away from her right now.

Running in my human form isn’t difficult but running in wolf form is definitely faster.  My mind continues to wander as I run and suddenly, I realize I’m at the western edge of my territory closest to Kingswood Park.  Of course, my wolf would lead me here, even in my human form.  It’s already after 10 pm and the park is closed this late at night, but I decide to run that direction anyway.

Even when the park is closed you can still see humans running the neighborhood in the evening.  I run all around the neighborhood intentionally avoiding the street where I’m certain she lives. I’m almost ready to head back home when my wolf pushes forward.  My claws begin to elongate and I quickly shove him back promising to run down her street if he will stop pushing his way out.  He knows we can’t shift in town like this, but he is desperate to find our mate.

I jog down the street at a leisurely pace hoping to see something that will indicate which house is hers.  As luck would have it, the jogging stroller she ran with had been left along the side of the house right in front of the fence.  I see that the lights are still on, but the blinds are closed.  At least I have an address now.  This should help me find more information about her.  Most importantly her name!
