~FLORA~

WITH BONNIE'S HELP, I changed out of the training garb, washed up, and changed into a dress. In a few minutes, we were heading downstairs and out of the castle.

Cameron was waiting for me astride a large black horse.

"Can you ride?" He asked, gesturing to a smaller grey horse.

"A little," I nodded.

He swung down from his horse and helped me into the saddle. His hands were firm on my waist, lifting me easily. I tried not to think about how warm and strong they were.

~FLORA~ THE HORSE GALLOPED furiously, and I did all I could to hang on to the reins as it jumped over fallen logs. Leaves and branches slapped across my face as we ran, but I could still hear the ever-closing snarl of the rogue near our heels. He was fast—almost catching up. Who were these rogues, and why were they after me? I asked myself. My mother's ring dug into my knuckle where my fist was clamped around the reins. I held on to the sting of it. It was the only thing keeping my thoughts from flying apart. I had died before and woke up a day before. Would it happen again if I died here? Or was that a one-time thing? The thought popped into my head. What if I died now and that was the end... I clutched the reins tighter, urging the stallion to push even harder. The trees blurred past. The wind screamed in my ears. The stallion was tiring. I could feel it in the heave of his sides and the way his strides were shortening, but still the rogue came on, closer and closer, his

  • Second Chance: Rebirth of the Luna Queen   CHAPTER TWELVE

~CAMERON~ I WATCHED THE rogues step out of the trees, one slow step at a time. The wind had been against us. That was how they had done it. Nothing had reached my nose but pine and wet earth, and the birds had gone quiet a full minute before, and I had noticed and told myself it meant nothing. Three of them. Gaunt, matted, ribs showing through patchy fur, lips peeled back from yellow teeth. They did not charge. They spread out, one left, one right, one straight ahead, and the hair rose along my arms. Rogues did not normally flank or fight with a strategy. They hit like a landslide, mad with hunger, with no plan at all, but these ones had a plan. I stepped sideways, putting my body between them and Flora. Behind me, my stallion screamed and fought his reins. “Identify yourselves,” I said. Nothing. I reached for them through the mindlink and found a blank wall of static where a mind should have been. I tried Lachlan. Duncan. No one answered. We had ridden too far out. No on

She will not throw you.""And if she does?" I asked."Then ye will get back on." He muttered with a small smile as he climbed back on his. He looked at Lachlan and gave him a nod. They shared an understanding between themselves before Cameron clicked with his tongue and nudged his stallion forward. My mare followed slowly. We rode in silence for a while, through the winding streets of the pack, past the houses and t

~FLORA~MY HEART WAS thudding in my chest as I watched Cameron storm away. It was like a curtain fell over his eyes and he became a changed personality in a second."Luna?" I looked up to Bonnie, she held up a hand to help me up which I accepted.Adam came forward slowly. "Luna, perhaps we can -" I shook my head and gave him the staff. "I have trained enough for today. Thank you Adam."He bowed and retreated, sending all the onlookers away to continue their training."Ye did well," Lachlan said as he approached us."He did not look so pleased," I muttered. "What happened?"Lachlan averted his gaze, refusing to meet my eye, meaning that he knew what was going on with Cameron, but he didn't want to say."Lachlan, as your Luna, and his wife, I think i should know when something is wrong with my husband," I said.He took in a deep breath. "You are bleeding.""It's just a scratch," I snarled, angry at all the gatekeeping of information that was going on in this pack. First off, they had n

~CAMERON~I WATCHED HER rush at me. This time, there was no hesitation. She came in low, sweeping the staff toward my legs instead of my head, trying to knock me off balance the way I had done to her.I stepped back. The staff whistled past my shin."Better," I said. She did not answer. Her breaths were coming in gasps now as she spun the staff and brought it up in a sharp arc toward my ribs. I caught it with my forearm, the dull blade thudding against bone, and twisted. The staff came loose from her grip again, causing her to stumble. I hooked my foot behind her ankle and pushed. She went down hard, landing on her side in the dirt. The crowd murmured."Again," I said. She pushed herself up. Her hands were shaking. Her breath came in ragged gasps. There was dirt on her cheek and blood on her lip from where she had bitten it, but she picked up the staff and came at me again. This time, she was different. She did not rush. She circled me slowly, the staff held in both hands, her eyes fi

~CAMERON~ THE WOMAN WAS stubborn. Very very stubborn. I could see it in the set of her jaws that her mind was already made up and before I could say anything, she was gone. I made to follow her but my pinky toe hit my bed frame hard, sending pain straight to my head. As I gripped my foot, I heard my wife rush the stairs, no doubt to look for her bodyguard. "Lachlan..." I growled through the mindlink. "Alpha," his voice came in, solid as ever. "Is anythjng the matter?" Apart from the pulsing pain from my little toe, and the self destructive nature of my new wife? "Have you seen the Luna?" I asked, flexing my foot. "I left her at your door," he said. "I am having breakfast now." "She will find you soon. Stop her from... doung anything foolish." "What do you mean?" He asked. "Is anything -" "Lachlan?" I asked, grabbing the shirt cloest to me and throwing it over my shoulder. "She is here." He said, and cut the mindlink. She has been Luna here for just a day, and my Gamma is al
