Imani barely slept that night. She tossed and turned, closing her eyes, but all she could think about was what her father had said and the cold indifference in his voice. Every word echoed in her head like a curse she couldn’t shake: “You will do as I say… the deal is final.”

Like hell she would follow his wishes.

She sat up, opened her drawer, and took out the photo in its silver frame. Her fists clenched around the old picture of her mother smiling, radiant, alive. She remembered the day they took it: a picnic, just her and Mum. Father had said he was busy something she didn’t believe anymore. Now she could see the strain between them, the small cracks she’d ignored.

Was it really a heart attack? Or something darker? The thought sent chills down her spine and anxiety nearly crippled her. Father wouldn’t, right? she asked the empty room. Night answered with silence.

She held the frame to her chest and let the tears fall. Sleep finally won the war.

By morning the house felt emptier than ever. The scent of coffee, her mother’s morning ritual was gone. The walls seemed to whisper secrets she was never meant to hear.

Imani moved to her mother’s study with determination in her step. Her father had sealed that room after the funeral, but today she didn’t care. She took the spare key her mum had once given her, slid it into the lock, and opened the door. Dust greeted her with a soft cough.

The desk was exactly as her mother had left it: books on geology and gold mapping, handwritten notes scattered across the surface. She ran her fingers over the worn wood, eyes closed, remembering how her mother used to sit there with her glasses on and a cup of citrus tea at her side, lost in thought and research. Oh, how I miss Mum.

With a heavy sigh she searched the desk until something brown caught her eye a folder. Tucked beneath it was a letter that made her freeze.

“If anything happens to me, check the mine records under ‘Project Aurora.’ Trust no one especially your father.”

Dated two days before her mother’s death

Imani’s heart thundered. Her mother knew.

Her phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number appeared:

“Meet me at The Spindle Diner by 8 p.m. I have information about your mother. Come alone.”

Her breath caught. Who could it be? A trap or the first real clue she’d been waiting for?

Outside, the sky was painted in shades of gold and gray. For the first time since her mother’s death something burned in her chest: a need for truth stronger than her fear. She straightened her shoulders and clutched the letter.

After two rings she dialed a trusted contact. A warm voice answered like velvet.

“What’s up?” Jade’s familiar tone sounded deceptively casual; Imani rolled her eyes. Typical Jade.

“A lot,” Imani said, keeping her voice cold. “I’m meeting someone tonight who says they have information about Mum’s death. I need you to track this number and find out who it belongs to. Be on standby before 8 p.m.”

“On it,” Jade replied. The soft clacking of keys sounded in the background. “This is going to take time, but I can get it.”

“I’ll be careful,” Imani said. “It could be a trap. But I’m not going in blindly.”

“Trust me my hands have been itching for work anyway,” Jade teased. “Send me the number.”

She forwarded the number and then tucked the brown folder and the letter under her arm. She walked out with her head held high.

If her father thought he could use and keep her in the dark , he was wrong!

Tonight she would find out what really happened no matter the cost.

The sun had long dipped below the horizon when Imani stepped out of the house, her black hoodie pulled tight against the cool night breeze. Her heart thumped like a steady drumbeat of defiance. Every step away from her father’s mansion felt like shedding a weight she’d carried for too long.

Her phone vibrated a message from Jade flashed across the screen. She unlocked it and clicked open the message.

Jade: I traced the number but could only find his name. Not sure if it’s real though. The name is listed as “Daniel.” He’s clean… too clean. No digital footprint, no history, nothing. That’s not normal, babe. Be careful! This could be a trap maybe from your dad or the Greensbergs. But there’s no direct traceable link to them.

Imani’s pulse quickened. If Jade couldn’t find anything, that meant one of two things the man was either ghost-level private… or dangerous.

She typed back quickly as she turned onto the next street, stepping into the black Camry she had ordered as an Uber.

Imani: Noted. If anything goes wrong, track my location. I’m on the move.

Richard Kane recovered first, his public mask slamming back into place with an almost audible click. The fury in his eyes, however, promised a private storm later.“Imani,” he said, his voice cutting through the music, deceptively calm. “I see you’ve found a… guest. Come. It’s time you properly met your future family.”As they approached, He gestured to the Greenbergs. Clint’s expression was one of thinly veiled contempt, but Ethan’s was more intriguing. He looked not angry, but… amused, a faint, cynical smile playing on his lips as his gaze flickered between Imani and Grady with clinical interest.Grady didn’t wait for her to move. He led her forward, his steps confident, as if he were the host. They stopped before the three men.Clint Greenberg nodded, curt.Ethan’s lips curvedin interest."Definitely have his attention now" imani thought as flicked her hair ." “Imani!”Her father’s voice cracked across the terrace like a whip. She froze, her lips still tingling from the kiss that stole her breath. It was soft, slow, and devastating in a way she had not anticipated. Grady’s hand slipped from her waist, but the warmth of his touch lingered like a brand but his eyes were dark and unreadable.Richard Kane stood at the threshold, his face thundercloud of fury.“What in God’s name are you doing?” His voice thundered.Imani didn't Flinch , instead she rolled her eyes, a smirk of amusement gracing her features.“What does it look like I’m doing, Father ?” She countered, meeting his gaze in open defiance, her tone sweet and sharp.“Inside. Now !" He Commanded “Why?” she challenged, standing taller. “So you can parade me around like an obedient doll?..Pretend I’m thrilled about being sold off?” His hand twitched ready to strike.“Enough! You will go in there and perform your duty… or so help me!” He strode forward, his hand raised, but halted

She gasped, her heart thundering. It was a formality, so why was her skin still tingling? She quickly withdrew her hand, clearing her throat before taking a final sip of her drink."I think you should stop drinking," he said, his voice serious yet sending warm volts of electricity through her. She was flushed; he was devastating. But she doubted he felt the same dizzying attraction. He seemed so utterly in control. He looked perfect, and for the first time, she wanted to stop fighting this feeling. Maybe having someone like him by her side would make her father think twice. She shook her head to clear the thought. But here he stood, a walking temptation. It was best to go back inside and face her fiancé."You looked lost in thought when I saw you." He moved closer, his cologne—a mix of fresh air, sandalwood, and peach—weaving a calming spell around her. The genuine concern in his demeanor made her want to confess everything. But he was a stranger, yet she couldn't deny the stra

“Where have you been, Imani? You’ve caused enough embarrassment already.” Her father’s voice cut through the grand foyer the moment she stepped inside the mansion. She could feel the anger radiating from him. Oh, how he hated to be defied. “Father,” she greeted, her voice steady but cold. “I heard you on the phone. I needed time to think.” “About what?” he snapped. “The company? Or your mother’s foolish ideals?” “About lies. About everything you've been doing without my consent. But do not think me a fool, Father. Mother's ideas were never foolish. It's your greed that can't wait to sell your own child!” she shot back. He slammed his glass on the table and leaned forward. “You’ll marry Ethan Greenberg, and that’s final.” “And if I don’t?” “Then you lose everything! The company, your inheritance, your mother’s estate. You’ll walk out of this house with nothing.” She stood perfectly still, her gaze cold and unyielding as it locked with his. The echoing silence stretched for sec

The screen filled with the face of the man who had given her the USB. His voice was rough as gravel, his deep gray eyes shadowed with a weariness that lined his face.“Hello. So... she finally told him what she had found. That was her biggest mistake."His voice tightened with regret."Though I warned her not to. She believed in him as her husband. The storm outside had slowed to a whisper, rain tapping faintly against the rusted shutters. Monitors flickered in shades of green and violet, their glow painting the women's faces as lines of encrypted code unraveled like silk. The hum of the processor filled the air. Jade’s finger hovered over the enter key for a heartbeat, then tapped it with finality.“We’re in,” Jade whispered, her voice tight with focus. “This is layered like a bank vault.”Imani’s breath hitched. Her pulse thudded in her ears as the final layer of encryption fell away, revealing a single folder. A final barrier vanished with a soft ping. The folder opened PROJECT AURORA CONFIDENTIALJade clicked it open.Files flooded the screen, reports, images, geological maps, blueprints and transaction logs.
