Chapter 2

Penulis: Morning Light
Okay, fine. I was the one who'd messed up first. Besides, mentally I was already pushing 30. There was no point holding a grudge against a 19-year-old brat.

Maybe Hugo really hadn't seen me.

Right then, the boarding announcement came on, so I hurried to the gate and deliberately walked ahead of him. He still didn't react.

Because I'd booked so late, I'd only managed to snag an economy seat. When I reached my seat, I ran into a problem. The overhead bin was too high, and I couldn't get my suitcase up there.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that the flight attendant was busy with someone else. I turned back and met Hugo's gaze for a split second, hoping he would help me out.

He looked at me for maybe one second, then broke eye contact, walked right around me, and headed straight for first class.

Wow. Okay. This time, I was 100% sure he was deliberately acting as if I didn't exist.

Some nice guy helped me hoist my bag into the bin, and I dropped into my seat, my cheeks puffed in annoyance. I fired off a sticker of an angry hamster to Hugo, then turned on airplane mode.

What was his deal? What was he even doing in Stavalon? Was he here on vacation, too? If he was, why hadn't he mentioned it to me?

The questions flooded my head. Somewhere in the middle of trying to puzzle them out, I fell asleep.

The plane touched down on time.

This trip back home was a spur-of-the-moment thing, so Mom and Dad hadn't sent a car. I wanted to surprise them anyway, so I didn't call the family driver.

I pinned my hopes on a ride-share app, but I'd underestimated Joslin's rush hour. There were over a hundred people ahead of me in the queue.

I was frowning at my phone, just about ready to cave and call the driver after all, when a luxury car eased to a stop not far away. The license plate was familiar.

Well, well. The car belonged to Hugo, who was also my neighbor.

I hurried over for a closer look, and sure enough, it was the Lodge family's driver, Mr. Moore. My mood instantly brightened. "Mr. Moore!"

He blinked in surprise. "Ms. Sutherland, you just landed, too? What a coincidence. You can ride back with Mr. Lodge. He's not out yet, though. You'll have to wait a bit."

That was exactly what I'd been hoping he would say. I handed over my suitcase and happily slid into the backseat.

What on earth was taking Hugo so long, really? What was he doing in there?

Just as I thought that, I saw him emerge from the terminal, his brows drawn together as he yanked open the back door. He froze for a second when he saw me, but he didn't say anything.

I scooted toward the far side, very considerately patted the seat next to me, and motioned for him to get in. He arched an eyebrow but still remained silent.

He wouldn't talk, so I didn't, either. The silence in the car gradually turned awkward.

At least Mr. Moore was chatty.

"Ms. Sutherland, did you just come back from a trip?"

"Yeah."

"Stavalon's a great place. It really has that old-town vibe."

I was a little puzzled. "How'd you know I went to Stavalon?"

Mr. Moore scratched his neck and said Mom and Dad had mentioned it. I didn't dwell on it.

My only issue now was that Hugo still wouldn't say anything. It left me feeling restless. I sneaked several glances at him, but all he did was sit there with his eyes shut and his lips sealed.

I flipped open the car's mini-fridge and spotted my favorite banana milk. I grabbed it in delight and was just about to twist it open when Hugo reached over, snatched it away, and shoved it back into the fridge. He even closed the door.

I gaped at him.

Since when had he become this stingy? I couldn't even drink a bottle of milk now? He was allergic to bananas, so the drink was obviously there for me.

I bristled and shot him a glare. He acted like he didn't see a thing and went right back to his fake nap.

Fine. He wanted to pretend we were strangers, huh?

I gave up on him, leaned against the window, and shut my eyes, too. I hadn't slept much the night before with my thoughts all over the place, so I was wiped.

What I didn't know was that the second I stopped looking at him, Hugo opened his eyes and stared at me for a long, long time.

When I woke up, I was already in my own bed at home. It was a little after 4:00 pm.

I dragged myself out of bed and wandered around the house until I found Mom in her studio. I padded over, sat down at her feet, and rested my head on her lap.

Memories of all the moments I'd had with Hugo flashed through my mind. Even though I knew I was probably about to collapse soon, I still took my medication and washed it down with a glass of water on the nightstand.I had no idea when I actually fell asleep. This was the dullest, and somehow the most meaningful, birthday of my 22 years.Morning light poured in.When I jolted awake, I was still in the same position as last night, kneeling by the bed. My first reaction was that I'd been reborn again. The pain in my chest from last night was gone. I searched all over and finally found my phone by the door.It was my 22nd birthday! I wasn't dead!I couldn't wait to tell Hugo. The second I opened the bedroom door, I met his gaze. His eyes were bloodshot, and his jaw was covered in stubble. He didn't look like some polished CEO at all.He was clearly just as worked up when he saw me. He didn't say a word—he just grabbed me and pulled me into his arms, holding me so tight I could barel

On the morning of the proposal, I happily got ready and waited at home for Hugo to show up.Honestly, I was a little nervous. Two lifetimes in, and this was my first time experiencing something like this. Mom laughed as she patted my head and said I'd finally grown up.Half an hour before the proposal, she took me up to the rooftop of Sutherland Group's office building. I was all dressed up in the kind of gown I'd always imagined as my wedding dress.Mom said I didn't need to go all out for an engagement, but I argued my case and insisted because I knew I didn't have much time left.If this was going to be the last time I saw Hugo, then I wanted this to be like our wedding. I wanted him to remember me at my most beautiful. As one of the stars of the show, Hugo had actually bothered to put on a suit for once. It gave him this refined, almost aristocratic air.The soft spotlight hit the center of the rooftop, washing his features in a warm glow as he stood quietly at the far end of

Before this, I'd never believed in the occult or supernatural things. The only reason I'd wavered was that, in my last life, I'd met an abbot who'd supposedly attained enlightenment. He said that Zeke and I were a bad match, and that one of us would end up killing the other.Back then, I'd been head over heels for Zeke, so I hadn't believed a word of it. Looking back now, the abbot had hit the nail on the head.I followed the monk's directions and met the abbot he'd mentioned. He was the same enlightened abbot I'd met in my last life. The abbot didn't look surprised to see me. He motioned for me to sit."I know what you want to ask," he said. "You were born with a congenital condition. It'll be hard for you to die of old age. You're destined not to make it past 22."It was like a bolt out of the blue. I couldn't bring myself to say anything for the longest time."That's all I can say, miss. Please head back. The one you're truly fated to be with is waiting for you at the door. Th

It didn't seem like enough. I leaned in and gave Hugo a quick peck on the lips, smacking my lips as I did. It sounded way louder in the empty stairwell than it should have.I suddenly felt embarrassed, like I'd just gotten my brain fried by hormones and lost all sense.Hugo didn't give me time to cringe. His left hand slid around to the back of my neck, pressed down hard, and yanked me forward, crushing my mouth against his soft lips.Compared to my earlier peck, this was a whole different level of sexy. I took a second to really feel it—his lips were soft, plush, and almost like jelly. It was Hugo's first kiss, too. All he knew how to do was latch onto my upper lip, sucking, licking, and nipping at it. He was way too into it. If he kept going like that, my lip would split.I pushed at his broad chest, trying to catch my breath and say something, but he suddenly freed his right hand, wrapped it around my waist, and lifted me up. He pried my legs apart, hooked them around his hips,

I was a little baffled. Curiosity got the better of me, so I dragged Hugo into the stairwell and looked up at him. "What did you say to my brother? Why did he suddenly do a complete 180 on me?""You wanna know?" Hugo looked at me."Yeah." I couldn't see my own eyes, but I knew they had to be shining right now.He took two steps forward and pinned me against the emergency exit door. He was so close I could see his crazy long lashes. His nose was really straight, too…I'd read online that guys with big noses were big everywhere. I wondered if it was true… I gave my head a little shake, trying to toss out the R-rated trash in my brain."I told him you don't like him anymore and that you like me now. I said I'm your boyfriend," Hugo murmured. My eyes widened in shock. How could he… How could he just say something like that?I swallowed hard, suddenly at a loss for words. What was with everyone? One after another, they were saying things I had no idea how to respond to.When I didn'

Even Dad, usually the calmest one at home, got a little worked up. He said, "I'll call Edgar and tell him to come back so we can throw a graduation party."I took a moment to settle down, then grabbed my admission letter and headed next door."Hugo, look at this—my admission letter! I got into Joslin University's literature department!"I shoved my acceptance letter right in front of his face, like I was showing off some treasure. He couldn't hide how happy he was, either. He reached out and ruffled my hair. "Nice job, Liss. I'm really happy for you."Because of the good news, both our families decided to hold a combined celebration and graduation party in mid-August. Even Edgar, who was doing further studies overseas, got called back.Deep down, I was a little uneasy. Edgar and I had parted on bad terms before he went abroad, and I had no idea how I was supposed to face him now.Of course, that was exactly when Mom told me to go to the airport with Hugo to pick Edgar up. I was
