Chapter 3

Autor: Morning Light
"Mom," I said.

She set down her paintbrush. "Honey, you're up. Hungry? I can heat up the lunch the housekeeper made."

Not that she mentioned it, I was indeed kind of hungry. But she was so warm, and it felt so good leaning against her that I didn't want to move. Besides, Dad would be home soon, and we'd have dinner together. I could hold out until then.

Mom ruffled my hair. "Alright, alright. Go call Hugo over for dinner. Look at you, still glued to your mother like this, even though you're already a big girl. Honestly."

Hugo? Again?

Remembering how he'd ignored me this morning, my first instinct was to refuse. But then I thought about how he was always home alone and felt a little bad.

After arguing with myself for a while, I decided to go get him anyway. Maybe I could also take the chance to ask what his problem was.

I quickly straightened myself up and went to knock on Hugo's door.

The door opened a moment later. He didn't look surprised to see me; he just turned around and walked back inside.

I stepped into the entryway and shut the door behind me.

Hugo sat cross-legged on the rug in front of the couch, playing a motion-sensor game. I went over and sat down next to him without saying a word.

I opened our chat. The last thing there was still the sticker I'd sent this morning. I sent the exact same one again.

His phone chimed, but he didn't check it.

I wasn't discouraged and started full-on spamming. His phone went off again and again, and his brows knitted in irritation. He finally grabbed the phone, glanced at the screen, then tossed it back down.

"What?" His voice came out low and rough, probably from not talking much.

It'd probably sound sinfully good if he panted in my ear…

The second I realized where my brain had gone, my whole face went up in flames. I shook my head hard, as if I could fling those dirty thoughts right out of my skull.

I snuck a guilty look at Hugo. He was still focused on his game, completely oblivious to me. I poked his arm. "My mom told me to call you for dinner."

"I'm not going," he said without hesitation.

What? Seriously? I'd invited him to dinner, and he was turning me down? What was his problem?

I shot to my feet and stared at him for a long moment, thinking he was being absolutely unreasonable. He was nothing like the Hugo I remembered from my last life.

Wait. My last life…

I vaguely remembered telling him once that he came over to my house for dinner every day like some stray dog… I honestly hadn't meant it like that.

Back then, I'd been dead set on marrying Zeke, and Hugo had kept trying to talk me out of it. I'd gotten angry and lashed out without thinking.

But that made no sense. How could the Hugo in this life be angry over something I'd said in a different lifetime?

Unless he'd also…

My heart lurched. I grabbed Hugo's arm hard, like I needed something to steady myself. A suffocating wave of panic crashed over me.

My fingertips went white, and my breathing turned ragged. A high-pitched ringing filled my ears. Through the noise, I could vaguely hear him calling me.

"Liss? Liss!"

I smiled self-deprecatingly. After everything I'd done to him, why would he still call me by my nickname?

When I came to again, I was in a hospital ward. Mom and Dad were sitting on my left. The moment they saw my eyes open, they both sagged in relief and started fussing over me.

I knew this scene all too well. In my last life, I'd hovered at death's door more times than I could count. I knew my heart condition had flared up again.

I shook my head weakly to tell them I was okay.

Mom turned away to wipe her tears.

Right then, Hugo came back with takeout. He hadn't expected me to be awake, so he'd only bought enough for my parents.

"I'll go buy more," he said, then hurried for the door like I was some kind of man-eating monster.

Dad caught his arm and told him to stay and watch over me while he and Mom went to get things sorted.

I knew they were trying to give us some space. They'd definitely noticed something was off between us.

"Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland, I'm sorry. I didn't take good care of her." Hugo set the food down and lowered his head in apology.

Memories of all the moments I'd had with Hugo flashed through my mind. Even though I knew I was probably about to collapse soon, I still took my medication and washed it down with a glass of water on the nightstand.I had no idea when I actually fell asleep. This was the dullest, and somehow the most meaningful, birthday of my 22 years.Morning light poured in.When I jolted awake, I was still in the same position as last night, kneeling by the bed. My first reaction was that I'd been reborn again. The pain in my chest from last night was gone. I searched all over and finally found my phone by the door.It was my 22nd birthday! I wasn't dead!I couldn't wait to tell Hugo. The second I opened the bedroom door, I met his gaze. His eyes were bloodshot, and his jaw was covered in stubble. He didn't look like some polished CEO at all.He was clearly just as worked up when he saw me. He didn't say a word—he just grabbed me and pulled me into his arms, holding me so tight I could barel

On the morning of the proposal, I happily got ready and waited at home for Hugo to show up.Honestly, I was a little nervous. Two lifetimes in, and this was my first time experiencing something like this. Mom laughed as she patted my head and said I'd finally grown up.Half an hour before the proposal, she took me up to the rooftop of Sutherland Group's office building. I was all dressed up in the kind of gown I'd always imagined as my wedding dress.Mom said I didn't need to go all out for an engagement, but I argued my case and insisted because I knew I didn't have much time left.If this was going to be the last time I saw Hugo, then I wanted this to be like our wedding. I wanted him to remember me at my most beautiful. As one of the stars of the show, Hugo had actually bothered to put on a suit for once. It gave him this refined, almost aristocratic air.The soft spotlight hit the center of the rooftop, washing his features in a warm glow as he stood quietly at the far end of

Before this, I'd never believed in the occult or supernatural things. The only reason I'd wavered was that, in my last life, I'd met an abbot who'd supposedly attained enlightenment. He said that Zeke and I were a bad match, and that one of us would end up killing the other.Back then, I'd been head over heels for Zeke, so I hadn't believed a word of it. Looking back now, the abbot had hit the nail on the head.I followed the monk's directions and met the abbot he'd mentioned. He was the same enlightened abbot I'd met in my last life. The abbot didn't look surprised to see me. He motioned for me to sit."I know what you want to ask," he said. "You were born with a congenital condition. It'll be hard for you to die of old age. You're destined not to make it past 22."It was like a bolt out of the blue. I couldn't bring myself to say anything for the longest time."That's all I can say, miss. Please head back. The one you're truly fated to be with is waiting for you at the door. Th

It didn't seem like enough. I leaned in and gave Hugo a quick peck on the lips, smacking my lips as I did. It sounded way louder in the empty stairwell than it should have.I suddenly felt embarrassed, like I'd just gotten my brain fried by hormones and lost all sense.Hugo didn't give me time to cringe. His left hand slid around to the back of my neck, pressed down hard, and yanked me forward, crushing my mouth against his soft lips.Compared to my earlier peck, this was a whole different level of sexy. I took a second to really feel it—his lips were soft, plush, and almost like jelly. It was Hugo's first kiss, too. All he knew how to do was latch onto my upper lip, sucking, licking, and nipping at it. He was way too into it. If he kept going like that, my lip would split.I pushed at his broad chest, trying to catch my breath and say something, but he suddenly freed his right hand, wrapped it around my waist, and lifted me up. He pried my legs apart, hooked them around his hips,

I was a little baffled. Curiosity got the better of me, so I dragged Hugo into the stairwell and looked up at him. "What did you say to my brother? Why did he suddenly do a complete 180 on me?""You wanna know?" Hugo looked at me."Yeah." I couldn't see my own eyes, but I knew they had to be shining right now.He took two steps forward and pinned me against the emergency exit door. He was so close I could see his crazy long lashes. His nose was really straight, too…I'd read online that guys with big noses were big everywhere. I wondered if it was true… I gave my head a little shake, trying to toss out the R-rated trash in my brain."I told him you don't like him anymore and that you like me now. I said I'm your boyfriend," Hugo murmured. My eyes widened in shock. How could he… How could he just say something like that?I swallowed hard, suddenly at a loss for words. What was with everyone? One after another, they were saying things I had no idea how to respond to.When I didn'

Even Dad, usually the calmest one at home, got a little worked up. He said, "I'll call Edgar and tell him to come back so we can throw a graduation party."I took a moment to settle down, then grabbed my admission letter and headed next door."Hugo, look at this—my admission letter! I got into Joslin University's literature department!"I shoved my acceptance letter right in front of his face, like I was showing off some treasure. He couldn't hide how happy he was, either. He reached out and ruffled my hair. "Nice job, Liss. I'm really happy for you."Because of the good news, both our families decided to hold a combined celebration and graduation party in mid-August. Even Edgar, who was doing further studies overseas, got called back.Deep down, I was a little uneasy. Edgar and I had parted on bad terms before he went abroad, and I had no idea how I was supposed to face him now.Of course, that was exactly when Mom told me to go to the airport with Hugo to pick Edgar up. I was
