Chapter 4

Author: Morning Light
Mom patted Hugo on the shoulder without saying anything, then left with Dad. The two takeout meals became just enough for Hugo and me.

Thankfully, I'd inherited my congenital heart disease from my grandpa; it wasn't some condition that restricted my diet to liquids. Otherwise, I really would starve to death.

Hugo still didn't say anything, but he carefully set out the food in front of me. I was too hungry for words, and I couldn't think of anything other than eating.

I wolfed down my portion in a few bites, then pushed the food container toward Hugo, signaling that he should eat. However, he snapped the lid back on and set it aside. Then, he looked at me darkly.

"Feeling any better?" His tone was hard and stiff, like I owed him big.

My heart sped up a little when I thought about why I'd ended up in the hospital. I was about to ask if he'd been reborn too when an abrupt ringtone cut me off.

We both looked down at my phone and saw the caller ID—Zeke. It went without saying who it was.

Hugo snorted, shoved his chair back, and walked out of the room. The chair scraped loudly against the floor, drowning out my soft call of his name.

I sighed inwardly and answered the call in resignation.

"Liss, I just heard from my aunt that you're in the hospital. Are you okay? I'll come see you tomorrow," Zeke said.

It wasn't surprising—his aunt was my attending physician, after all. That hadn't changed in this life.

He sounded worried, but it was all for show.

"I'm fine. You don't need to come. I just want to rest," I said softly, making myself sound as frail as possible.

"Okay. Get all the rest you need. I'll ask my aunt to keep a closer eye on you."

After I hung up, I craned my neck toward the door. It was quiet outside. Hugo showed no sign of coming back in.

I sent him a sticker of a peeking hamster. A soft rustle of clothes sounded outside, then I heard the door open.

I straightened up in bed, ready to have a heart-to-heart with him the second he walked in. I waited and waited, but he never came through the door.

Instead, he texted, "I'll sleep in the outer room. Call me if you need anything. Get some rest."

I poked his profile picture on the screen. How bold of him to ignore me!

Without realizing it, I sent him another sticker, this time of a hand patting a hamster and ruffling its fur.

Oh, God. What had I just done?

I really hadn't meant to. In my flustered panic, I deleted the sticker as fast as I could, still feeling rattled. Would he think the sticker represented what I wanted to do to him?

He sent a question mark.

I replied with a sticker of a hamster bowing out. After that, he didn't respond.

Things went on like this for several days, even though he took care of all three of my meals every day.

By the time I was discharged, we still hadn't had a real conversation once.

"Liss, did you and Hugo make up yet?" Mom sat with me on the couch and held my hand.

I shook my head.

"Hugo's had it rough since he was a kid. His parents divorced early—he's lived with his father since, but his father doesn't really care about him. Naturally, he's not the most sensitive young man. You need to guide him more.

"But remember that as a daughter of the Sutherland family, you should still have your pride. Don't lose your backbone over anyone."

Hugo…

"I know, Mom. I'll go talk to him today and clear things up," I said.

"Right now?" Mom hesitated. "It's pretty late, though. Go tomorrow."

I shook my head, checked the time, then headed out. When I knocked on Hugo's door, he'd just showered. His hair was still damp.

Wet strands clung to his forehead, softening his features. He looked a little less roguish than usual and a little more boy-next-door.

Before I realized what I was doing, I reached up and ruffled his hair.

Memories of all the moments I'd had with Hugo flashed through my mind. Even though I knew I was probably about to collapse soon, I still took my medication and washed it down with a glass of water on the nightstand.I had no idea when I actually fell asleep. This was the dullest, and somehow the most meaningful, birthday of my 22 years.Morning light poured in.When I jolted awake, I was still in the same position as last night, kneeling by the bed. My first reaction was that I'd been reborn again. The pain in my chest from last night was gone. I searched all over and finally found my phone by the door.It was my 22nd birthday! I wasn't dead!I couldn't wait to tell Hugo. The second I opened the bedroom door, I met his gaze. His eyes were bloodshot, and his jaw was covered in stubble. He didn't look like some polished CEO at all.He was clearly just as worked up when he saw me. He didn't say a word—he just grabbed me and pulled me into his arms, holding me so tight I could barel

On the morning of the proposal, I happily got ready and waited at home for Hugo to show up.Honestly, I was a little nervous. Two lifetimes in, and this was my first time experiencing something like this. Mom laughed as she patted my head and said I'd finally grown up.Half an hour before the proposal, she took me up to the rooftop of Sutherland Group's office building. I was all dressed up in the kind of gown I'd always imagined as my wedding dress.Mom said I didn't need to go all out for an engagement, but I argued my case and insisted because I knew I didn't have much time left.If this was going to be the last time I saw Hugo, then I wanted this to be like our wedding. I wanted him to remember me at my most beautiful. As one of the stars of the show, Hugo had actually bothered to put on a suit for once. It gave him this refined, almost aristocratic air.The soft spotlight hit the center of the rooftop, washing his features in a warm glow as he stood quietly at the far end of

Before this, I'd never believed in the occult or supernatural things. The only reason I'd wavered was that, in my last life, I'd met an abbot who'd supposedly attained enlightenment. He said that Zeke and I were a bad match, and that one of us would end up killing the other.Back then, I'd been head over heels for Zeke, so I hadn't believed a word of it. Looking back now, the abbot had hit the nail on the head.I followed the monk's directions and met the abbot he'd mentioned. He was the same enlightened abbot I'd met in my last life. The abbot didn't look surprised to see me. He motioned for me to sit."I know what you want to ask," he said. "You were born with a congenital condition. It'll be hard for you to die of old age. You're destined not to make it past 22."It was like a bolt out of the blue. I couldn't bring myself to say anything for the longest time."That's all I can say, miss. Please head back. The one you're truly fated to be with is waiting for you at the door. Th

It didn't seem like enough. I leaned in and gave Hugo a quick peck on the lips, smacking my lips as I did. It sounded way louder in the empty stairwell than it should have.I suddenly felt embarrassed, like I'd just gotten my brain fried by hormones and lost all sense.Hugo didn't give me time to cringe. His left hand slid around to the back of my neck, pressed down hard, and yanked me forward, crushing my mouth against his soft lips.Compared to my earlier peck, this was a whole different level of sexy. I took a second to really feel it—his lips were soft, plush, and almost like jelly. It was Hugo's first kiss, too. All he knew how to do was latch onto my upper lip, sucking, licking, and nipping at it. He was way too into it. If he kept going like that, my lip would split.I pushed at his broad chest, trying to catch my breath and say something, but he suddenly freed his right hand, wrapped it around my waist, and lifted me up. He pried my legs apart, hooked them around his hips,

I was a little baffled. Curiosity got the better of me, so I dragged Hugo into the stairwell and looked up at him. "What did you say to my brother? Why did he suddenly do a complete 180 on me?""You wanna know?" Hugo looked at me."Yeah." I couldn't see my own eyes, but I knew they had to be shining right now.He took two steps forward and pinned me against the emergency exit door. He was so close I could see his crazy long lashes. His nose was really straight, too…I'd read online that guys with big noses were big everywhere. I wondered if it was true… I gave my head a little shake, trying to toss out the R-rated trash in my brain."I told him you don't like him anymore and that you like me now. I said I'm your boyfriend," Hugo murmured. My eyes widened in shock. How could he… How could he just say something like that?I swallowed hard, suddenly at a loss for words. What was with everyone? One after another, they were saying things I had no idea how to respond to.When I didn'

Even Dad, usually the calmest one at home, got a little worked up. He said, "I'll call Edgar and tell him to come back so we can throw a graduation party."I took a moment to settle down, then grabbed my admission letter and headed next door."Hugo, look at this—my admission letter! I got into Joslin University's literature department!"I shoved my acceptance letter right in front of his face, like I was showing off some treasure. He couldn't hide how happy he was, either. He reached out and ruffled my hair. "Nice job, Liss. I'm really happy for you."Because of the good news, both our families decided to hold a combined celebration and graduation party in mid-August. Even Edgar, who was doing further studies overseas, got called back.Deep down, I was a little uneasy. Edgar and I had parted on bad terms before he went abroad, and I had no idea how I was supposed to face him now.Of course, that was exactly when Mom told me to go to the airport with Hugo to pick Edgar up. I was
