Chapter 3

Author: Breeze
"There were so many reporters today. You should check it out. It's all over the news."

I answered calmly, "I've seen the news. It's okay. Let it go."

"Don't be upset, Wendy. A few of us already gave her a piece of our mind for you. Honestly, each of us only said one thing, but you should've seen her. She broke down crying like it was the end of the world. Eric looked like he wanted to tear us apart. Tch, what a disgusting pair."

I could not help but laugh, "Thanks, guys. Could you let our other friends know? It's true that Eric and I are divorced."

"What? No way, she really took Eric from you? That's not okay. I need to talk to Daniel. We have to think hard about whether to keep working with Eric or not."

I had worked so hard to help Eric's company by getting in with the wealthy wives' club and bringing in lots of benefits. It was not a club that just anyone could join, and today, just receiving a few harsh words was already being let off easy.

Not long after I hung up, they both came back.

I stepped out of the bedroom to say hello and to tell them I was moving out.

However, before I could get a word out, Eric kicked me in the stomach.

"Did you do this on purpose? You got those women to insult Yvonne, right? That's so low!"

He kicked me so hard that I doubled over in pain, breaking out in a cold sweat.

Yvonne's eyes were puffy from crying, and she ran into Eric's arms.

"I'm sorry, Eric. Wendy doesn't want me around, so I'll just go."

"She's the one who should be leaving! Wendy, I just found out tonight that you were the one who pushed me into the river on purpose!”

"I can't believe how mean and heartless you are! Leave now! I never want to see you again!"

I held back the pain in my belly, struggling to stand up and look him in the eye.

"Eric, you're being so silly. Didn't you ever think that if I really pushed you, why would I almost die trying to save you? You saw me in the hospital, fighting for my life. Who would play a game that could cost them their life?”

"Someone did push you that day, but I was pushed in just like you were!"

With that, I went upstairs and quickly moved my few things, one by one, to the front door of the big house.

Eric looked confused. When I carried out the last suitcase, he finally understood.

He grabbed my arm and asked, "Did you plan to move out all along?"

I pulled away from him. "Isn't this what you wanted? So be it."

My words seemed to make him think twice, and he softened a bit. "Where will you go if you leave? If you say you're sorry to Yvonne for real, I might think about letting you stay."

Before I could answer, Yvonne got upset.

"Eric, she can't take all that! Wasn't she supposed to leave with nothing?"

Right in front of us, Yvonne opened all my suitcases, scattering my things all over the ground.

Eric looked annoyed, but she quickly said, "Eric, I only heard about what happened today. She almost killed you back then. You can't be nice to her and let her take all these valuable things!"

Eric believed her without a doubt, and the next second, he took out a lighter and tossed it onto my pile of stuff.

The flames roared to life in an instant.

"Yvonne has a point, if you're going to leave, then leave everything behind!"

As the fire devoured each item, my heart crumbled into pieces.

'Eric, our decade of love is now just ashes,' I thought.

I climbed into the car by myself, gazing at the house I had called home for so many years as it slowly disappeared from view.

I quickly pulled out my phone and dialed a number. "Mr. Lloyd, I'd like to work for your company."

"I'll come ready with my full commitment, and two of Eric's key clients. Is that enough? I can bring more if needed."

A deep voice answered. "What do you want in return?"

"I have no home and not a single penny to my name."

"Alright. Come to my place."

On the screen, Eric was by the river, watching the sunset, when out of nowhere, someone pushed him from behind, sending him tumbling into the water.I was just walking by when the same person pushed me too.I could not swim, but I managed to give the only log I found in the river to Eric, while I started sinking slowly to the riverbed."Look at the person who pushed you. Doesn't that figure look familiar? Even with a hat on, doesn't it remind you of Yvonne?"Yvonne denied it fiercely. "You're trying to pin this on me! It couldn't be me!""Really? Then maybe you'd like to see the other security videos I have, showing you changing clothes and leaving the alley?"Eric was stunned and whispered, "No way… Yvonne did this?"I jumped in. "You've always thought Yvonne was so upset about you marrying me that she left the country, right? Well, you're wrong. If she really loved you, why did she rush to convince you to marry me to take responsibility?”"She was using you all along! She kne

I stood there, still as a statue, as memories came rushing back.My family did not have much money. They spent everything they had so I could go to that fancy school. To save money, I never ate breakfast. Then one day, I found a fancy breakfast on my desk and saw Eric walking away. I never let on, but I quietly accepted the food he left for me.I had come from a regular middle school, so keeping up with the smart kids at that high school was tough. When I was really struggling, I found a set of class notes on my desk that helped me a lot.Once again, I saw Eric. From then on, I secretly started to like him. However, I never thought he did those things because he liked me, I figured he just felt sorry for me.Thomas went on, "Every time you smiled at me on the basketball court, it was like my heart melted.""Later, I got brave enough to write you a love letter. I asked Eric, my buddy, to give it to you, but you turned me down hard. You said you wanted to focus on school and not

His words made me laugh. "You know I've loved you for years. You're not stupid, but how did you treat me?:"I worked so hard to help make your company succeed. After it went public, you gave my shares to Yvonne behind my back and pushed me out of my VP job. You wanted me to hang out with rich ladies to keep your clients happy…”"And what did I get in the end? Divorce papers from you!"He looked worried when he saw that I was not soft anymore."Didn't I tell you? Once she gets her citizenship, I'll divorce her and marry you. Isn't that what we agreed on?”"Wendy, if you bring back those clients, I won't divorce you. I know you're just with Thomas to make me mad. You can't just throw away our years together."I laughed even harder. "I do love you, but I'm not dumb. There are so many ways to get someone their citizenship. Why did you choose this way?”"Eric, I'll just think of our time together as wasted years of youth. Please leave and don't bother me again.""Alright! Wendy, you

What did she mean by that? Was there something going on between Thomas and me that I did not know about?"Do you know why Mr. Lloyd, even though he's so great, hasn't had a woman by his side for years?""Huh? Why?""Because he's always had someone special in his heart."Before I could ask more, we were already at the hospital entrance.I got out of the car and saw Thomas looking worried.I asked him, surprised, "Didn't you get on a plane? Why are you here?"He did not answer my question. Instead, he sounded annoyed, "I was gone for just a bit and you ended up like this? Really, you're hopeless!"With that, he took my hand again and rushed me into the hospital.I could not remember how he had gotten me back to the villa after that. Jessica's words kept echoing in my head. For some reason, thinking about the woman Thomas held dear made my heart race.I was going to call Jessica for the whole story after Thomas left, but then, out of nowhere, Eric came running up.As soon as he

I thought about the little money I had in my bank account and let out a sigh."Okay, Mr. Lloyd. I'll do as you say."I threw myself into work over the next few days.I kept my word and set up meetings for him with the husbands of some wealthy ladies I knew well.He made them offers they could not refuse and signed deals with them.Only three days remained until I could get my divorce with Eric, but I was feeling uneasy, like something bad was going to happen.I had only planned to introduce Thomas to a couple of small clients to show I was serious about the job, without really affecting Eric's company. However, somehow, I ended up convincing some big clients to switch over too.Eric had to be furious with me.Today, as I was leaving the company to deliver a contract, a group of people suddenly blocked my way. They all waved their phones at me like they were trying to catch me in a net."Wendy, people are saying you're the one who caused Eric's accident in the river, and that

He immediately turned and headed for the kitchen.Sitting on the couch, sipping the hot coffee the butler had brought, I asked with curiosity, "Why did Mr. Lloyd go to the kitchen himself?"The butler, smiling warmly, answered, "Ms. Canfield, you're in for a treat. I've heard he's a great cook, but I've never seen him in action."As we chatted, Thomas came over with a bowl of piping hot special mushroom soup and a few small dishes for me.In the blink of an eye, the butler and the other servants had vanished from sight. He watched me until I had finished everything, then he finally relaxed and leaned back on the sofa.Without any preamble, he asked me, "I've agreed to help you get your revenge on him."His words took me by surprise, and my mouth hung open in shock. What was he even talking about? I had come to him because I was out of money and my name had been dragged through the mud by Yvonne. Finding a job to support myself was going to be tough, so I took a chance on him, fi
