Chapter 2

Author: Breeze
I smiled and told him, "Didn't you say this divorce is just a pretense? I believe you."

He froze for a second, guilt written all over his face.

I felt a tiny sense of victory inside.

He should feel guilty after all those years. I wish he would feel that way forever.

The next day, Eric came home really early, carrying a big box.

"Wendy, there's a fancy dinner tonight, and they said to bring your spouse. Will you come with me?"

I took the box and opened it to find a stunning evening gown with a sparkling diamond necklace on top, even bigger than Yvonne's.

"Alright. I'll try it on."

For years, whenever there was a fancy event, he would take me along, but I always had to get my own dress and jewelry. That was the first time he ever bought me a dress.

I figured it would not fit right since he had not paid much attention to me in years. Was I still chubby or had I slimmed down?

However, before I could even think about it, Yvonne barged into the room.

She shoved me aside, grabbed the gown from the box, and ripped it apart.

"Wendy, you don't deserve to wear something this nice! If it weren't for you, it all would've been mine!"

After ruining the dress, she snapped the necklace and flung it at my face, cutting her finger in the process.

I did not get mad. When she pulled out the dress, I could tell it was not my size. I used to be a bit chubby, but I have gotten much skinnier these days.

That size seemed like it was picked for my old body.

If it did not fit, it was no big deal if it was ripped up.

I picked up the pieces calmly, put them back in the box, and without looking up, I told her, "Yvonne, you were the one who rushed off to get married abroad. Why blame me for your choices?"

Just then, there was a knock at the door, and Eric's voice called out, hurrying us.

Yvonne burst into tears, collapsed into Eric's arms, and showed him her bleeding finger.

"Eric, I just wanted to try on the pretty dress, and she said I made everything I touched dirty. She tore up the dress and the necklace, and when I tried to stop her, she hurt me."

Eric spotted the torn piece of the dress in my hands and his face turned red with anger.

He marched right up to me and slapped my cheek hard.

"Wendy! You've gone way too far! I told you that the divorce is just for show, so why are you still being mean to Yvonne?!"

I held my stinging cheek, tears welling up in my eyes.

That was the second time he hit me over Yvonne.

Even with a second chance at life, I could not escape being picked on by Yvonne.

I could not keep quiet anymore and shot back, "Eric. After ten years of marriage, don't you know me at all? Would I really do something like that?

"And be honest. Is this divorce really just for show?"

He looked stunned, as if I had caught him off guard. He stared at me, speechless, without any explanation.

Then he grabbed Yvonne's hand. "I don't have time for your silly talk. Yvonne's coming with me tonight. You should stay home and think about how you can become a better person. If you don't know how, just Google 'how to become a good sister-in-law!'"

With that, he stormed off with Yvonne, not even glancing back.

I looked at the mess around me, dried my tears, and started packing my bags quietly.

In this second chance at life, I would not let them threaten me anymore.

Eric and I were high school sweethearts. I had a crush on him for four years, and we got engaged in our second year of college after I nearly died saving him from drowning.

In my previous life, I knew he had feelings for Yvonne, even though she did not show much interest in him.

I thought that once we were married, he would realize what kind of woman truly deserved his love.

However, I was so wrong, and it had cost me my life.

That night, a wealthy lady who was a good friend of mine gave me a call.

"Wendy, what's up with Yvonne? She's really overdoing it, right?”

"She came and started telling everyone that you and Eric are divorced. She even said you pushed Eric into the river on purpose and then pretended to rescue him, just to make him marry you.”

On the screen, Eric was by the river, watching the sunset, when out of nowhere, someone pushed him from behind, sending him tumbling into the water.I was just walking by when the same person pushed me too.I could not swim, but I managed to give the only log I found in the river to Eric, while I started sinking slowly to the riverbed."Look at the person who pushed you. Doesn't that figure look familiar? Even with a hat on, doesn't it remind you of Yvonne?"Yvonne denied it fiercely. "You're trying to pin this on me! It couldn't be me!""Really? Then maybe you'd like to see the other security videos I have, showing you changing clothes and leaving the alley?"Eric was stunned and whispered, "No way… Yvonne did this?"I jumped in. "You've always thought Yvonne was so upset about you marrying me that she left the country, right? Well, you're wrong. If she really loved you, why did she rush to convince you to marry me to take responsibility?”"She was using you all along! She kne

I stood there, still as a statue, as memories came rushing back.My family did not have much money. They spent everything they had so I could go to that fancy school. To save money, I never ate breakfast. Then one day, I found a fancy breakfast on my desk and saw Eric walking away. I never let on, but I quietly accepted the food he left for me.I had come from a regular middle school, so keeping up with the smart kids at that high school was tough. When I was really struggling, I found a set of class notes on my desk that helped me a lot.Once again, I saw Eric. From then on, I secretly started to like him. However, I never thought he did those things because he liked me, I figured he just felt sorry for me.Thomas went on, "Every time you smiled at me on the basketball court, it was like my heart melted.""Later, I got brave enough to write you a love letter. I asked Eric, my buddy, to give it to you, but you turned me down hard. You said you wanted to focus on school and not

His words made me laugh. "You know I've loved you for years. You're not stupid, but how did you treat me?:"I worked so hard to help make your company succeed. After it went public, you gave my shares to Yvonne behind my back and pushed me out of my VP job. You wanted me to hang out with rich ladies to keep your clients happy…”"And what did I get in the end? Divorce papers from you!"He looked worried when he saw that I was not soft anymore."Didn't I tell you? Once she gets her citizenship, I'll divorce her and marry you. Isn't that what we agreed on?”"Wendy, if you bring back those clients, I won't divorce you. I know you're just with Thomas to make me mad. You can't just throw away our years together."I laughed even harder. "I do love you, but I'm not dumb. There are so many ways to get someone their citizenship. Why did you choose this way?”"Eric, I'll just think of our time together as wasted years of youth. Please leave and don't bother me again.""Alright! Wendy, you

What did she mean by that? Was there something going on between Thomas and me that I did not know about?"Do you know why Mr. Lloyd, even though he's so great, hasn't had a woman by his side for years?""Huh? Why?""Because he's always had someone special in his heart."Before I could ask more, we were already at the hospital entrance.I got out of the car and saw Thomas looking worried.I asked him, surprised, "Didn't you get on a plane? Why are you here?"He did not answer my question. Instead, he sounded annoyed, "I was gone for just a bit and you ended up like this? Really, you're hopeless!"With that, he took my hand again and rushed me into the hospital.I could not remember how he had gotten me back to the villa after that. Jessica's words kept echoing in my head. For some reason, thinking about the woman Thomas held dear made my heart race.I was going to call Jessica for the whole story after Thomas left, but then, out of nowhere, Eric came running up.As soon as he

I thought about the little money I had in my bank account and let out a sigh."Okay, Mr. Lloyd. I'll do as you say."I threw myself into work over the next few days.I kept my word and set up meetings for him with the husbands of some wealthy ladies I knew well.He made them offers they could not refuse and signed deals with them.Only three days remained until I could get my divorce with Eric, but I was feeling uneasy, like something bad was going to happen.I had only planned to introduce Thomas to a couple of small clients to show I was serious about the job, without really affecting Eric's company. However, somehow, I ended up convincing some big clients to switch over too.Eric had to be furious with me.Today, as I was leaving the company to deliver a contract, a group of people suddenly blocked my way. They all waved their phones at me like they were trying to catch me in a net."Wendy, people are saying you're the one who caused Eric's accident in the river, and that

He immediately turned and headed for the kitchen.Sitting on the couch, sipping the hot coffee the butler had brought, I asked with curiosity, "Why did Mr. Lloyd go to the kitchen himself?"The butler, smiling warmly, answered, "Ms. Canfield, you're in for a treat. I've heard he's a great cook, but I've never seen him in action."As we chatted, Thomas came over with a bowl of piping hot special mushroom soup and a few small dishes for me.In the blink of an eye, the butler and the other servants had vanished from sight. He watched me until I had finished everything, then he finally relaxed and leaned back on the sofa.Without any preamble, he asked me, "I've agreed to help you get your revenge on him."His words took me by surprise, and my mouth hung open in shock. What was he even talking about? I had come to him because I was out of money and my name had been dragged through the mud by Yvonne. Finding a job to support myself was going to be tough, so I took a chance on him, fi
