When Sean was still Shane, genetics technology hadn't been significantly developed yet. Despite that, his parents had spent a considerable sum of money for him to get his DNA sequenced by a biology laboratory.

If Sean wanted to return to the Kingston residence as Shane and claim his inheritance, he would have to prove his identity using his genetic data.
