*Avina*

I jolted upright with a sharp inhale, my eyes snapping open with my breath catching halfway like something had clawed its way up my throat.

And I instantly regretted that action.

The world lurched and a sharp pain detonated behind my eyes. It was as if someone had driven a spike straight through my skull and left it there. I squeezed my eyes shut, but that only made it worse.

A broken sound slipped out of me.

“God—”

The world lurched and a sharp pain detonated behind my eyes. It was as if someone had driven a spike straight through my skull and left it there. I squeezed my eyes shut, but that only made it worse. A broken sound slipped out of me.“God—”My hand flew to my temple, fingers pressing hard like I could hold my head together, like it wasn’t about to split open. The movement tugged at something else, and a sharp, tearing ache ripped through my shoulder.“Holy shit!“ I cussed under my breath, gripping my shoulder. The ache slowly spread from my shoulder down my arm in a hot, throbbing wave, stealing the strength from my fingers. My arm sagged uselessly at my side, heavy and wrong. I don’t remember hitting my shoulder against anything that would’ve caused this kind of bone-deep ache. And where on earth

*Avina*I didn't scream. I didn't waste my breath. I just threw my entire weight to the right, slamming my shoulder into the man with the gravelly voice. And because he wasn't expecting it, he stumbled back, his boots slipping on the damp floor. I lunged forward, using my bound hands like a club. I swung blindly, catching the second man—the one with the airy voice—directly in the side of the head. I heard a sharp clink as the syringe he was holding shattered against the floor."You little bitch!" He screeched. I didn't wait to catch my breath. I quickly reached up, my fingers trembling as I clawed at the blindfold. I ripped it down, the world blurring into focus. I threw a quick searching glance through the room. It had grey concrete walls, a single flickering bulb, and a medical bed in the center surrounded by rusted IV poles and trays of gleaming steel instruments. It somehow looked like a makeshift surgery, and strongly reminded me of a butcher shop.I swallowed hard down my dry

*Avina*The world didn't come back all at once when I regained consciousness. It just slowly returned in sharp, jagged pieces of sensory overload. First thing I noticed was the smell. It was a thick and suffocating mix of stagnant water, rusted iron, and the sharp, medicinal sting of antiseptic. And then there was this intense cold that seeped through the fabric of my dress, biting into my skin from the damp concrete floor beneath me. I shivered, my shoulders flexing as I tried to move my hand to touch the back of my head, but my arms wouldn't budge. It only took me half a second later to realize that my wrists were pulled tight behind my back, the rough bite of hemp rope digging into my skin. Fear twisted my gut. I tried to pry my eyes open, but was met with only darkness. I reached up, my fingers coming in contact with a thick, grimy fabric that was tied around my head, pressing against my eyelids. I lay perfectly still, my heart thudding against the cold concrete floor. ‘Don't

*Avina* I leaned back, the leather creaking beneath me. I should have known. Ronan Graves didn't just play the game; he owned the stadium. Hell, the man probably owned the entire city. He was the highest shareholder in my mother’s company which means that he holds more power in this building than I did.Why hadn't he told me? Was this why he had been watching me so closely? He wasn't just interested in the ex-wife of his nephew, he was protecting his investment.A pinch of acute disappointment rolled in my stomach but I quickly stuffed it away. Because it was a feeling that was both unusual and alien to me especially after I had already gone out of my way to convince myself that Ronan meant nothing to me. No matter what. Shaking my head, I scrolled further down, past the list of minor board members, and finally hit the financial audits. My eyes narrowed. There were discrepancies. Huge ones. There were payments to companies I’d never heard of. L&M Logistics. Blue Horizon Holdings.

*Avina*Needless to say, I was appointed the CEO of Drenex Holdings before the day was over. And when I woke up the next morning, multiple headlines were still screaming my name. By the time I reached the Drenex Holdings headquarters at 8:00 AM, the world already knew everything. Or, at least, the version of ‘everything’ the press could piece together. — Daughter of Murderer Takes the Throne. — Sebastian Winslow Accused Of Murdering His late Wife, Calista Drene-Winslow— Calista Drene’s Will Surfaces After 25 Years. These and many similar others were the titles plastered across many major magazines, newspapers and tabloids in the city. Stuffing my phone into my bag, I stepped out of my car, the morning sun glinting off the glass towers of the city. I brushed a hand down my bruised plum colored suit to ease out any possible crease. My heels hit the pavement with a rhythmic clack-clack-clack sound that made my resolve grow stronger. As I walked through the lobby, the air around me

*Avina*I got to the elevator only to find out that it was out of service. My hands curled into tight fists. They are really going out of their way to make sure I don't get any chance whatsoever. Only that they underestimated me this time around. I scanned the hallway and found the emergency stairwell by the corner. Profound relief rushed through my body. Without wasting any more time, I turned and ran. My lungs burned, the sound of my heels echoing against the concrete was like a drumbeat. I reached the top floor, pushed through the heavy doors, and found myself in the plush, silent hallway of the executive suite. The massive mahogany doors of the main boardroom stood at the end of the hall, and I could hear the muffled sound of my father’s voice coming from within.I stopped and smoothed my hair back into place. I took one long, steadying breath. Then, I threw the doors open. The sound of the heavy wood hitting the stoppers was like a thunderclap. All heads snapped in my direction
