Chapter 5

Albas POV

The silence after Alpha Marshall spoke felt really heavy. It was even heavier than the rain that had ruined my anniversary dinner a few hours ago.

An important member of his pack. His special guest.

I stared at him thinking I must have misheard. No one talks to an Alpha King like that without getting in trouble. No one offers shelter to a wolfless omega like me like I’m something valuable.

"Have you lost your mind, Alpha Marshall?" Dante’s voice cracked through the silence. He sounded shocked and angry. "She is my mate. My Luna. You can't just..."

"Was," Marshall corrected. He sounded really calm, like Dante’s anger didn't bother him. "She rejected you herself in front of witnesses. Has your memory already failed you, Alpha Dante?"

The crowd started murmuring louder. I heard some of the Alphas who had supported Dante earlier shifting their feet. They didn't seem sure of themselves anymore.

"This changes nothing," Dante snapped. His jaw was shaking. "She has nowhere else to go. She knows nothing but this pack."

"Then it seems fortunate I've offered her somewhere else to go." Marshall’s gaze didn't leave mine. There was something in his eyes that I couldn't read. It made the mark on my neck throb in a way that had nothing to do with Dante.

I didn't know this man. I had heard of him like every wolf in every pack has heard of him. He's the Alpha King, ruthless. His own wolf is said to be cursed.

"Why?" The word came out before I could stop it.

Marshall’s eyebrow went up. "Why what, Luna Alba?"

"Don't call me that. I'm no one’s Luna anymore." I straightened my spine, trying not to let my voice shake. "Why would the Alpha King care about an omega he’s never met before tonight?"

"Maybe I don't like watching an Alpha threaten a woman who has already said no." He said it simply, like it meant nothing to him. Like the whole pack wasn't standing there listening to him stand up to Dante.

Dante’s face turned red. "You overstep, Alpha Marshall. This is my pack. My territory. My business with my mate is not yours to interfere with."

"And yet I have interfered," Marshall said. "And there's very little you can do about it, is there?"

I watched Dante’s jaw work. He knew, like I did, that the Alpha of Alphas doesn't make declarations that he expects to be challenged.

I still had hope. "Alpha Marshall," I said carefully, "I appreciate the offer. I don't want to be anyone’s burden."

"Burden?" He studied me for a moment. "I don't recall using that word."

"A guest," I repeated. "I know what that sounds like."

"Then you misunderstand me." Something shifted in his expression. "I don't offer my name as a kindness, Alba. I offer it because Alpha Dante has shown what kind of man he is tonight. I don't have much patience for men like him."

Veronica, who had been quiet beside Dante, finally spoke up. "This is absurd. You would take in his discarded mate simply to spite him?"

"I'd advise you to remain silent," Marshall said, without looking at her. "Given that you're the reason half of what was just exposed tonight became necessary."

She paled and said nothing else.

Dante took a step toward me. For a moment I thought he was going to grab my wrist. Marshall moved first. He didn't block Dante. He got close enough that Dante stopped.

"Don't," Marshall said. That one word carried a lot of weight.

Dante’s hands curled into fists. "She'll come back. Once she realizes what she’s lost, once she understands that no Alpha King’s charity lasts forever, she'll come crawling to me."

"We'll see," Marshall said, unbothered. He turned his attention back to me. "You don't have to decide anything tonight. You can't stay here. Not after this."

I knew that. I understood it when Dante called the guards to arrest me. I understood it when he threatened to silence me.

Trusting a stranger, even one who just defended me, felt like jumping off a cliff.

"Why does it matter to you?" I asked again. I needed an answer.

Marshall’s lips curved slightly. Not quite a smile. "Maybe that's a conversation better suited for somewhere other than your former mate’s hallway."

I glanced back at Dante one last time. He was still seething. Veronica’s hand was on his arm. He didn't seem to notice.

I had nothing left here. No allies, no savings, no home.

"Fine," I said, the word leaving me before I could change my mind. "I'll come with you."

Marshall’s gaze lingered on me. Something flickered behind his eyes. "Good," he said simply. He extended his hand toward the door.

I didn't know yet that walking through it would mean stepping into a world more dangerous than the one I was leaving behind.

Alba’s POVThe drive to Marshall’s place took all night. I spent the time staring out the car window, watching the trees go by in a blur. I kept thinking about what I had done. I couldn't shake the feeling that I had made a huge mistake.I had left with nothing. No clothes, no money, nothing. Just the dress I wore to the ceremony and the mark on my neck that still felt like it was burning. I tried to calm myself down by pressing my fingers against the glass of the window, focusing on that instead of the panic in my chest. When we finally arrived, the sky was starting to get lighter. Marshall’s house was huge. It was made of stone. It looked like it had been carved right out of the earth. It was taller and wider than anything I had ever lived in. There were guards stationed around the walls, spaced evenly apart. They all bowed when Marshall’s car came through the gate.I was expecting to feel really tired when I got out of the car. What I felt was everyone staring at me. The servants s

Chapter 4 Alba's POV I didn’t know what had led me into accusing Dante of being impotent, but hearing him expose that Veronica was already pregnant with an heir for him wasn’t what I had expected to find out.“Stop causing a scene here, Alba!” he suddenly shouted when he realized the extent of the damage he had caused himself.“Who wouldn’t want to have a lady like Veronica impregnated? She is a beta’s daughter and has highborn blood in her veins. Why would I leave someone like her for you?” he snapped, leaving me shocked.“Alpha Dante, are you defending your actions of impregnating another woman when your Luna is still alive?” the Alpha King asked him, and the crowd went silent as they listened to what excuses he had to say.“You don’t have anywhere else to go, Alba. I’m all you have. Come to me now and I’ll put this behind us. Don’t forget you depend on me,” Dante said instead, forgetting the question he was asked.A cry almost escaped my lips but I forced myself and held it back

Chapter 3Alba's POV“Don’t push your luck, Alba! You never know when I reach my limits!” Dante snapped the second he heard my words about wanting to reject him.He left the suit he had been trying to wear, leaving Veronica aside as he walked towards me.“You’re indebted to me! Don’t forget that without me, you’re nothing! How dare you!” he snapped.“How dare you, a wolfless thing, think of rejecting me, an Alpha?” he added, his pride seeping through every word.“Isn’t that what you and Veronica have always wanted? Isn’t that what you particularly wanted so that you could mark her and make her your official Luna? Why are you acting so disinterested now all of a sudden?” I asked, staring at him. And then at Veronica, who stood behind him, looking confused.“ I'm only together with him because I missed how close we were before, Alba. Stop accusing me of things I’m not guilty of,” she said with a childlike whining tone, like she always did whenever she wanted to accuse me of things I was

Chapter 2Alba's POV I pushed open the door without looking back, ready to confront him for all the four years of silence I had endured.“Alba, why are you in my chambers when I haven’t sent for you?” he asked the second he saw me, enraged that I had shown my face when he didn’t want me to, when he was busy with his mistress, Veronica, to even recall that today was supposed to be our anniversary.I noticed the faint smile on her lips, how she looked triumphant, as if she had won a trophy. This same woman had broken up with Dante four years ago when his pack faced a crisis at the border which made the finances dwindle. She ran off with his previous beta who had also stolen from the pack treasury.I’ve always loved Dante and I thought staying and helping him heal from that betrayal, especially after I found out we were fated mates on the night of my eighteenth birthday, was going to be enough to prove my love and affection to him.I thought he would accept me after that. Chapter 1Alba’s POVMarrying Dante, the Alpha of Moonstone Pack and my fated mate hadn’t seemed like the biggest mistake of mine, but lately, it was beginning to feel exactly like that.I stared at the table that had already been set out before me. The dishes had been ruined by the rain. The scented candles and confetti I had meticulously arranged during the day were also ruined, washed into nothing but a messy blur beneath the downpour.“Luna, you need to leave now so you do not catch a cold. I don’t think the Alpha would still be coming,” my servant said to me.There was a shrill tone in her voice, as if she was truly bothered about me, as if she was scared I might fall sick from the huge downpour I had been sitting under for hours now.“I’ve repeatedly gone to call the Alpha, but his guards won't allow me to meet him. They always keep giving the same excuses,” she continued, but I stopped her with a flicker of my hand.I didn’t want to bother her with my problems. I had already de
