Liam

“I must say Mr. Denver, your artworks are amongst the finest the country has to offer,” Mrs. Banks, wife of the top officials in New York City says with appreciation written all over her face, as she gazes across my office. She sits down in the chair next to my desk while I lean against mine, crossing one leg over the other.

“Thank you ma'am. Your compliments are most appreciated, but please call me Liam.” I respond. “Thank you for taking an interest.”

She laughs. “You’re so polite, Mr. Denver.”

I gesture toward a box sitting on my coffee table. “Have a look inside?”

She cocks a brow curiously and does so. “What’s in it?”

After opening it and finding a small framed painting of her and her husband, she gasps and covers her mouth with both hands. “Oh my goodness! This is beautiful. Thank you so much, Liam.”

“My pleasure, Mrs. Banks. Just a little way of showing my appreciation for your continued patronage. Just the other day I saw one of my works in the mayor’s office on tv. I knew

We both laugh softly at that, enjoying each other’s company without the slightest ounce of tension hanging between us anymore. It doesn’t take long for our laughter to die down, however, and I find myself unable to meet his eyes. “So tell me, what do you think of my hair now?” He questions teasingly, gesturing toward himself. “It’s good.” I say. “Just good?”I roll my eyes. “It’s okay. Now can I get back to my food?”He laughs loudly, throwing his head back and holding his stomach.“Of course.”Silence fills the space once again, broken only by the sounds of clinking cutlery and soft music echoing throughout the hallways. The silence is deafening, leaving both me and Liam to our own thoughts. We eat and drink but I remain mostly quiet. Eventually, Liam’s phone begins vibrating and he excuses himself to answer it. He quickly leaves the table and strides into the foyer entrance down the long hall. After a few minutes, he walks back into the dining area, returning to his seat at the t

The waiter appears a few seconds later and takes our order. Once we make our selections, he bows his head politely and leaves the two of us to ourselves.Neither of us says anything while we eat. All of our concentration is focused on keeping our eyes on our respective meals, although I catch him stealing occasional glances in my direction.“So..” Liam finally says, clearing his throat. “I’ve been waiting to ask…”“Yeah?”“Why does it feel like you hate me?” He asks bluntly, his gaze piercing into mine.“Huh?” I mumble dumbly, completely caught off guard by his question.“Up until yesterday, we’ve been at each other’s throats. First you steal my meal at the food truck, then there's the endless banter at the office.”I drop my fork onto my plate, placing my elbows on the tabletop and resting my chin in my hands. “Are we seriously doing this? You’re gonna ruin a perfect evening?”He shrugs. “I don’t want to. But if we’re going to have an amicable working relationship, I need to know wha

Liam looks stunning. There he stands, dressed in the most impeccably tailored suit, you would think that Zeus made it himself. His hair looks soft and silky, his smile charming as usual, while his blue eyes sparkle with amusement and affection. My heartbeat speeds up as he smiles at me.The man has my complete attention standing there, holding a bouquet of flowers in his hand and wearing a look of absolute delight on his face. Though I have seen him a million times before, it somehow feels like the first time. It must be the new haircut and I have to admit, the effect is striking. His gaze makes me tingle all over with anticipation, and there is a warm feeling blooming in my chest. He steps closer, his fingers brushing against my bare arms as I hold the door open for him. His cologne is intoxicating. I inhale the scent slowly, savoring the sensation, unable to believe the fact that Liam’s the reason I’m feeling this way.He holds up the bouquet of flowers and presents them to me with

LilyTurns out saying no to a date with one of New York’s most eligible bachelors is a near impossible task, even for me. In my defense, Christie didn’t make it easy for me either. We’ve been going at it all day, with her giving me a million and one reasons why I should go out with Liam. Sometimes I wonder if she has my best interests at heart.“The guy’s a flirt. He’s no good, no different from all my exes.” I argue, time and time again but she won’t hear of it. Her stubbornness and insistence has me wanting to strangle her.“It’s wrong to judge a book by the cover,” she says, and before I could argue any further, she goes off on a tangent. So now here I am, standing in front of the mirror, my hair in an elegant chignon, wearing a strapless black dress that shows off just enough cleavage and curves without looking slutty. The bodice isn’t too low, not too tight or too loose, but just right. An emerald necklace with diamonds hangs around my neck, which matches my emerald earrings and

When she looks up at me, the look on her face makes my heart melt. She looks absolutely miserable and her face pales further, if that’s even possible. She bites her lip nervously as she shakes her head, her hair falling down over her shoulders, framing her face perfectly. She walks over to the couch and plops down, pulling her legs up underneath her while I sit beside her. Her head lies down on her knees and she stares ahead blankly. For a while, we’re quiet. Until finally, she starts talking. “I’m sorry.” She mumbles in between sobs.“Huh?” I say softly, feeling slightly bewildered. I wasn’t expecting her to apologize to me. Not in a million years. Tonight is turning out to be a night of surprises.Lily turns around and looks at me with red rimmed, watery eyes, and smiles. “Don’t make me say it again please.”I chuckle breathlessly and shake my head. She does seem to have gotten herself together now. “Okay, okay, I won’t do that. Go on,” I encourage her and lean forward, eager to hea

Liamdammit. Turns out choosing to work on a painting at the gallery was a bad idea, now I’m stuck here alone during this thunderstorm, and the lights are flickering. The day seemed to fly by after my earlier brush with Lily, and that pretty much set the tone for a bad day. I just don’t get it.Every attempt I make to get closer to her—for work reasons of course—ends up being met with coldness and hostility, and now I’m done trying. I’m getting to my limits gradually, and as soon as I can’t tolerate the strain anymore, I’ll dismiss her. That would be much better for both our sakes. Good riddance.I sit, eyes strained on my phone as I try to find some way to pass time, because I have no idea what else to do. My back hurts from sitting in the uncomfortable wooden chair for so long and the growling from my stomach only makes it worse. A sigh escapes my lips as I take a glance at the clock at the other end of the room.10pm. Shit. I’ve not been at the gallery at this hour since my early da

LilyIt’s another day to walk around with a cloud hanging over my head. As hard as I try, I can’t shake off the memory of what happened at home with my mom. Even with the efforts I put in to ensure we rarely cross paths, I guess it’s somewhat inevitable since we’re living in the same house. Maybe it’s high time I moved out of the house, to Christie’s on a more permanent basis—or maybe at least until I can afford someplace else. Her words ring in my ears as I take my place behind my desk:“I can bet my entire net worth that you’ll lose your job soon. You’re just too incompetent.”On another day, I would have been able to tell her to fuck right off, but today I wasn’t in the mood for confrontation or even verbal sparring. Instead, I chose to remain silent in favor of going through the motions of work. It was all I could do to keep from slamming her head down on the table. Ok, I won’t do that but I sure as hell want to.Luckily, Liam is not in his office yet, so I’m thankful that I don’t

I cock a brow. “You mean Lily?”He leans back into his chair, a smug grin on his lips. “Yeah. How was her first day at work?”“Good.”I lie. But I can’t tell him she called my paintings trash. He’d never let me hear the end of it.“Gotten up in her guts yet?” He continues.I stare at him. “No. Why would you ask such a question?”“C’mon Liam. You’re a flirt who can’t keep his dick in his pants. We both are. And Lily more than fits into the description of a classic, sexy temptress.”He’s got that right. But it can’t happen. Her sore attitude and the fact that she’s Dean’s sister makes it impossible. We’d be lucky to get past a day without getting at each other’s throats, never mind hooking up. Not a chance.“She does. But it’s not happening.”“Why?” He asks, genuinely curious.“She’s my friend’s sister. Dean and I go way back. I can’t afford to ruin our friendship.”“Nonsense.” He waves me off and downs his whiskey. “If you’re good friends like you say you both are, then he should be mo

Lily smirks at me, her lips twitching ever so slightly upwards before turning away. I can’t tell whether it’s an attempt at humor or a grimace.“They’re in the storeroom. But if you want them back, you’re gonna need to get them yourself.” She walks to the exit, opens the door and pauses. “I’ll be at my desk if you need me.”Then she’s gone, leaving me sitting in my office in disbelief.* * *The rest of the day flies past with me barely seeing Lily. Or rather, both of us making conscious efforts to evade each other. For someone who’s usually clear and in control of his feelings, I can’t quite pin down what I feel for Lily.On one hand, I find her extremely attractive. If she wasn’t Dean’s younger sister, I would be pulling out all the stops to get her into bed. But as it is, I don’t want to do anything that might ruin my relationship with Dean. Then there’s the other part of me that finds her quite annoying with her penchant for getting on peoples nerves—my nerves in particular. Well,
