Steven

Steven saw Aaliyah leaving as they got to her door. Aaliyah waved at Luke, but she winked when she saw Steven. He took that as a sign that they had been talking about him. What had they said? What was Cassandra thinking when it came to the two of them? He was sure that he was going to lose himself with her, but now he had Luke to keep him straight. Why couldn’t it have just been the two of them?

His friend commented on the place, and he told him about the extra furniture that he had found ‘lying around’ and hooked his sister up with. Steven could see that Luke knew something was going on, but he didn’t want to get into it too much. He let it go and Steven was ever so grateful for that. There was nothing else that he could do.

Cassandra was stunning, wearing a light summer dress that showed off her curves. She wasn’t dressed to impress though, more to be comfortable, and it had been a while since she’d had that look on her face. Steven felt like she was getting back to her

JENNII pour myself a cup of peppermint tea and take it to my laptop in my office. It’s getting late, but after Laurie’s remark about Langston and me having a whole slew of babies, I can’t stop thinking about fostering children. I settle into my desk chair and take a sip of tea as I open my browser. I search “How to become a foster parent in Georgia” and click on the top result.I continue to sip my tea as I read through the information, my pulse quickening. Am I really ready to take such a huge step? There’s a form I can fill out to get someone to contact me and discuss the process further. I hold my breath and then go for it. What can it hurt? I can at least get the ball rolling. If I decide later I’m not ready, then I can back out. But I see the faces of the children on the website, and it tugs on my heartstrings. These kids need help, and I can give them a good life. The best of the best. I could take them from hell to heaven. The thought warms me. Or maybe it’s just the tea I jus

Mittens and Zebra, the two gray striped cats that my parents have, chase each other across the living room, tumbling into one of their famous wrestling matches that they’ve been doing since they were kittens. Mittens swipes Zebra across the nose, and Zeb howls in pain.“You two are worse than kids. No respect for Jenni’s piano performance.”When Jenni finishes the song she’s playing, she looks up at me. “Hey, babe.” She gets up and walks up to me, slinging her arms around my shoulders. I try not to stiffen. It’s so strange having her touch me like this, but it’s nice too, which puts me on treacherous ground. I can’t enjoy this too much.“Wes,” my mom calls to my father. “Look at how adorable they are together.” She claps her hands giddily.Dad looks at us from over the book he’s reading in his favorite chair by the fireplace. “I see that.” He sets the book down and uncrosses his legs. “Is dinner ready yet?”“I’ll go check with Lidia.” She heads toward the kitchen.Jenni and I settle o

“And you’re just now telling me this?”Jenni is warm against my side. She feels nice there, like she fits into me. For a moment, it’s almost like the rivalry is gone between us. But who am I kidding? She’s only acting.“I didn’t know we were telling people yet.” I look down at Jenni.“We talked about it, babe.”Babe? Now we’re using pet names? I’m so out of my league here.“So that’s why you took her on such a nice date!” Mom looks like a kid who just got a coveted toy on Christmas morning.I can’t help but feel a little guilty at the look of pure joy in my mom’s eyes.“That’s right,” Jenni says. “I couldn’t help but fall for him after that.” She snuggles into me.She’s good at this. I can barely tell she’s acting, and it’s taking my breath away to have her so close.“Look at the two of you together!” Mom is ecstatic, and guilt creeps up at the web of lies we’re spinning. Jenni and I haven’t really talked through the logistics of how we’re going to end this thing. I don’t like the ide

LANGSTONToday is race day, and my stomach is tied in knots as I head to the Blue Mountain Racetrack. The Finleys and Keiths created this racetrack years ago, and we’ve been holding races here for generations. I keep reminding myself that I’ve done everything I can to prepare and I have to let Thunder and his jockey do their jobs. I take a seat as the race begins. Jenni is sitting with her family nearby. I look over to see her all dressed up with a fancy hat and everything. We go all out when it’s racing day.“How was your date with Jenni?” my mom asks when I take a seat next to her.“It went well. I took her to seeLes Mis.”“You know that’s her favorite musical, right?”“That’s what I understand.”My mom’s face glows with excitement. “I can hear those wedding bells already!”Kaison leans forward. “Mom, he’s not telling you the whole story. I heard he bought out the entire theater to give her a private showing.”“What? Langston, you sly dog! Who knew you were such a romantic?” Ashton

“I’ll let him know there’s nothing actually going on between us, and he won’t care,” Langston explains. There’s a car waiting for us with our driver, Nate, one of the Atlanta staff members that serves the Keith family. We’ve done so many things together for so many years that we all know the employees that work for the families. The air is cool, and I wish I’d brought a jacket. But Nate has the car warm, and I slide into the back seat. I scoot all the way over to make room for Langston.“Where are we going?” I ask when Nate pulls out of the airport.“You’ll see.”We drive through traffic and eventually pull up to the Fox Theater. “Are we watching a show? What about dinner?”“Don’t worry, I won’t let you go hungry. Heaven forbid you get hangry on me.”I roll my eyes. “I don’t get hangry…”“You don’t? Then why do you have daggers shooting out of your eyes when it takes too long for our food to come out at the diner?”I scowl at him. “I don’t want to talk about it.”Nate opens my door, a

Noodle jumps up on the couch and stares Langston down hard.“I’m all out of meat, kitty.” He shows her his empty hands, but she meows demandingly at him.I can’t help but laugh.Noodle eventually gives up and snuggles beside Langston.“I guess you’ve won her loyalty,” I say.“That’s what happens when you spoil a kitty.”“So back to the fake dating thing,” I say. “How is this going to work? Are we going to have to kiss each other and stuff?”Langston smiles. “Isn’t that what couples do?”“Not always in public. Some people don’t like PDA.”“But we’re putting on a show, and we need it to be convincing. My mom can sniff out lies like a bloodhound. After raising five boys, she’s become quite the expert.”I laugh. “You guys did put her through a lot growing up, so it’s no surprise.”“We broke so many things in the house and blamed them on each other.”I shake my head with a smile. “Typical boys. Ronnie tried to do that to me too, but our parents always believed me.”“And sometimes it was yo
