(Kael’s POV )

The Hollow had never been this quiet.

Not after a battle. Not after blood. Not even after death.

Kael sat with his back against the charred remains of a support beam, his body still trembling from what had passed through him. Every muscle ached. His veins pulsed with something colder than blood, something that wasn’t entirely his anymore.

Aria slept only a few feet away, the baby nestled in the crook of her arm. The faintest shimmer of gold pulsed beneath the infant’s skin when he breathed, soft, rhythmic, harmless. For now.

Tessa and Jarek had taken the first watch. He could hear them whispering near the ridge, their voices a low hum against the still air. The forest beyond remained unmoving, as though the world itself had paused to catch its breath.

Kael’s gaze drifted back to the sealed ground where the gate had once been. The earth there was smooth now, untouched, the runes dark and lifeless. But he could feel it, deep under the soil, something vast and pa

(Aria’s POV)Preparation is a quieter kind of war. There are no screams in it. No blood singing on stone. Just intention, tempered, tested, struck again and again until it holds.By dawn, the estate had shifted from repair to readiness. Corridors subtly reoriented themselves, shaving distance, reinforcing thresholds. Wards thickened like gathered breath. The magic wasn’t frantic. It was focused.I stood in the map chamber while Azrael sketched silver light into the air, thin lines linking sigils that pulsed like distant stars. Three points emerged with three convergences and each humming with a different pitch of danger. The Hollow Crown burned brightest.“You’re certain?” I asked.Azrael lowered his hand. The constellation steadied. “It reacted to you before you ever knew what you were. Places don’t do that without cause.”“Reassuring,” Ren drawled from his place against the wall, sharpening a blade that seemed to drink the light around it.Matteo didn’t smile. He stood near the thre

( Aria’s POV ) The silence after a battle is never empty. It hums. Not with relief, but with aftermath. With the echo of choices made too fast to reconsider.Kael carried me through the corridors like I might shatter if he set me down, his blood slick on my sleeve, his jaw locked so tight I could feel the grind of bone beneath skin. The estate was alert and watching, magic sighing as it repaired itself around us.I should have been shaking.I wasn’t.That scared me most of all.“Kael,” I murmured when we reached the inner healing chamber. “Put me down.”“No.”“Kael.”His steps slowed, then stopped. He looked at me like he was bracing for impact, as if my next words might break something irrevocable.“I need to stand,” I said gently. “If I can command the world, I can stand.”Something like pain crossed his face, but he obeyed. The floor was cool beneath my bare feet. Sigils pulsed faintly, reacting to my presence like they recognized me now, like I was no longer a stranger wandering

( Kael’s POV ) The bond woke me before the wards screamed. Not noise.Pressure.A wrongness that slid across my skin like oil over water.I was on my feet in the dark before Aria stirred, already reaching for the blades under the bed, magic snapping awake in my veins. The estate exhaled a warning tremor, a low, resonant thrum that meant something had touched the outer perimeter. Not breached.Tested.I turned to Aria. She was already sitting up, eyes glowing faintly silver in the half-dark, breath steady despite the danger punching through the air.“You feel it,” I said. She nodded once. “They’re closer.”“Stay here.”“No.”I didn’t argue. There wasn’t time, and worse, I couldn’t bring myself to force her now. The bond would fight me if I tried. It didn’t want cages. It wanted alignment.Fine.I helped her to her feet and threw her one of Lira’s ward-threaded jackets. She shrugged into it, magic flaring instinctively as it sealed around her.“You don’t have to lead,” I said quietly a

( Aria’s POV ) The word mate didn’t land gently. It struck like thunder. Not loud but deep. Underground. The kind that cracks fault lines no one knew were there.Kael’s arms were iron around me, heat and certainty and something terrifyingly close to devotion anchoring me upright while the room buzzed with magic and shock. Everyone was staring. Waiting. Watching me like my answer might reshape the world.Maybe it already had.“I’m not a thing to be claimed,” I said, carefully. Steadily. “Not by gods. Not by monsters. And not by you.”Kael didn’t flinch.Good.“I know,” he said quietly. “That’s why I said as my mate. Not my possession.”The distinction mattered more than he realized. The bond pulsed. Not painful. Not invasive. Just… present. Like a second heartbeat I hadn’t learned to recognize yet. When I focused, I could feel him there. Enormous. Controlled. Wrapped tight around something wild and dangerous that paced constantly just beneath his skin. His wolf. And beneath that. Fea

( Kael’s POV ) Night pressed in around the estate like a held breath.Too quiet.I felt it in the way the wards hummed sharper than usual, in the way my wolf paced beneath my skin, unsatisfied, restless, hunting. Aria slept tucked against my chest, her weight warm and real, her heartbeat steady beneath my palm.Still, I didn’t relax.I never would again. She lay in the bed I rarely used with massive, carved oak, magic-threaded into the frame itself. I hadn’t bothered undressing her fully. Just enough to make her comfortable. Enough to see that the black residue was gone, her skin clear of shadow, her magic humming softly again like moonlight over water.Claimed by nothing. Not yet.I brushed my thumb over the faint bruise on her arm, fury coiling hot and patient in my gut. A bruise meant someone had touched her. That they had gotten close enough to think they could take what wasn’t theirs.A mistake they would not live to learn from twice.Aria shifted, brow furrowing. Her fingers ti

Aria’s weight in my arms should have soothed me.It didn’t.Every step toward the estate only sharpened the fury threading through my veins, tempering it into something colder, more lethal. Not rage anymore.Purpose.The kind that doesn’t fade. The kind that ends with bodies on the ground.Aria exhaled against my collarbone, soft, steadying. She was trying to calm me and her, the one who’d been ambushed, who should’ve been clinging to consciousness instead of worry over what storm she’d woken in me.I tightened my hold anyway. She felt too light. Too breakable. And the magic clinging to her skin was wrong, like frost crawling across warm glass. The Devourer’s touch always left a residue. And I hated that I could feel it on her. When we broke through the last line of trees, the estate lights flared across her face, painting gold across the bruised imprint on her arm.My wolf snarled inside me.Aria stirred. “Kael… you don’t have to carry me. I can walk.”“You’re staying where you are,”
