Susan's POV
“Ethan, please I need you to promise me you won't get mad at me after the confession. It might as well get you upset, and I wouldn't want that to happen,” I begged Ethan. I prepared his mind for the big stage. That way, he doesn't get surprised after listening to me. After pleading with him not to get mad at me after the confession, I realized how stupid I sounded. That was one of the dumbest requests I ever made. I should know better than to trust the loyalty of a man who reeks of desperation. How can I demand such from an angry man? The way he expressed his anger, he might as well defeat a battalion of soldiers without a scratch on his skin. “Cross my heart, Susan. We both know I can never lie to you. You can trust me on this one. I promise to act accordingly. Just spill. You know I can never do anything to hurt you,” Ethan assured me with a soft tone. How he went from being a wild cat to a cool sheep baffles me. I knew his actions weren't genuine. He only said that to trick me into speaking. I cleared my throat and gulped my saliva before going to hide behind Paul. He's the only one that can stop Ethan from hitting me after the confession. “So Paul and I went to Maria's house to plead for your release. She asked us to sign the court restraining order document against you and we did. That was the only way she could sanction your freedom,” I explained. Immediately, I went on both knees to plead for Ethan's forgiveness. I didn't have to wait for him to speak first. He was speechless for a while. He faced the ground most of the time as though he were crying. What I said might have messed with his brain. I was hoping he wouldn't lose his sanity. That's too much for one person to handle. I stood off the ground and took a few steps away from him just to ensure my safety. The next few minutes weren't predictable. Slowly, he lifted his head and looked in our direction. His eyes have become reddish. He was starting to look like a wolf yearning to launch an attack on his prey. “So are you saying that you…" Ethan stuttered at every attempt to speak. The words suddenly became too heavy for his lips. “Are you saying I won't have access to Maria or the kids? Is this what it's all about? Please don't lie to me. Tell me what I need to know,” He finally found a way to speak. “Yes, Ethan. I apologize for going against your will. You warned me about this and I disappointed you. I hope I can make amends,” I added with an apology. My apologies were left unattended. I couldn't tell what was running through Ethan's mind, but I bet they weren't cool. He must be plotting something evil against me, I guess. What he might do to me would not be televised Maria is a fucking billionaire. She doesn't joke with her kids and will do everything to protect them," I explained. “To hell with her stupid wealth. I don't want to hear shit about that.,” Ethan yelled at me to stop me from speaking. “Who gives a fuck about her wealth and new identity? She ain't got nothing on me. Maria can still be manipulated. She can't be smarter than I am,” Ethan buttressed. He seemed so confident of getting the kids back despite the lack of concrete evidence. “Your wife is right, Ethan. You have got to listen to her and stop fooling around. It's obvious you're not making any sense,” Paul stepped in. You aren't sure if the kids are yours. You haven't even conducted a DNA test yet. I advise you to forget about Maria and move on with your life," Paul advised Ethan and spoke in my favor. I loved the way he approached the situation. He might not be a man of many words, but he makes so much sense each time he decides to speak. “Paul, even you?” Ethan shook his head sideways regretfully “Whose side are you on? You should take sides with me. I can't believe you could say that to my face. What are we cousins for?” Ethan lamented. He was disappointed in Paul for supporting me. “I love you as my cousin but we just gotta be honest with ourselves. You're fighting a lost battle. Let go of this shit and return to the company,” Paul added. “Fuck you, Paul. I could have stood a chance if it weren't for your stupidity. You and Susan brought me into this mess. You allowed yourselves to be fooled by Maria. And now you want to play the victim card? Damn you!” Ethan blasted Paul. He wasn't looking in my direction anymore. It was so unfortunate that Paul took the fall for me. I felt so guilty seeing Ethan treat him like that. I had every reason to intervene. However, I decided to step aside and let the two men handle the situation their own way. The fact that Ethan didn't previously hurt me doesn't guarantee my safety this time. From the way he spoke to Paul like a nobody, I won't be surprised if Paul does nothing while Ethan hits me hard. “So you're trying to blame me for everything? Is this the motherfucking thanks I get for coming through for my cousin? Same thing your parents can't do for you?” Paul fired back at Ethan after the long wait. It was starting to look like a thug of war when Ethan approached Paul with a powerful punch. I was afraid that they might hurt themselves. That's the first time I'll witness them argue like that. And it all happened because of me. “How dare you speak about my parents in such a manner? One more word from you and your teeth will be scattered on the ground.” Ethan threatened Paul.Tony Woods' POV “Did you just hear that? He fucking uttered something,” I called Marcus attention to the voice I heard. I needed to be certain that I wasn't imagining things that weren't real.In a delicate situation like that, the last thing I'll consent to is jokes or pranks.“Of course, I did, Tony. You weren't the only one who heard the voice. It is safe to say that your ears lead you in the right direction. Let's listen to what the son of a bitch has to say,”Marcus replied.I was relieved by his utterances. It confirmed that I wasn't losing my mind after all.Patrick stepped forward. He stood before everyone to ensure he was closer to Sean than any of us. “Start talking now! This is your chance to make it right again. Tell us what you know about Angela's whereabouts. And don't you dare miss out on any details,” Patrick ordered Sean. For a moment, I was impressed by his moves. That was the only sensible thing that has been done over the last couple of hours. If he had rec
Tony Woods' POV “Stop that man.Don't let him get an inch close to the interrogation room. He's going to do something crazy," Officer Patrick instructed his other officers.Instantly, they stood before me and formed a shield to block my exit.Soon, Patrick joined me as he panted heavily. I gave him the run of his life that he would never forget rushing. “What's the meaning of this madness, Patrick? Have you suddenly lost your manners? Is this how you treat a man of my age?Tell them to get the fuck out of my way before someone gets hurt," I demanded.I used my age as an advantage to get past the officers, but I failed. The officers in front of me were ruthless. It was as though Patrick had cast a spell on them, that made them obey his command without grudges.“This ain't got nothing to do with ageYou brought this upon yourself. If there's anyone that might end up hurt, it's you," Officer Patrick said to me. It was starting to sound like a threat to me. I couldn't handle the r
Chapter 55Tony Wood's POV“Wait a minute, did you just hear that?” I called Patrick's attention to the tiny voice I heard. “Heard what? What are you talking about? Are you starting to hear things that aren't real?” Patrick mocked me. He didn't think I was telling the truth. “Have you forgotten the reason we are here? Let's go inside quickly before she escapes,” he urged me, but I refused. I was resilient and focused on my instincts. “I might be old, but certainly not dumb or stupid. I knew what I heard. That was Kelly's voice,” I challenged Patrick.I didn't allow him to control my thoughts. I left the doorway and strolled around my mansion, trying to trace the voice I heard. “Papa, please come,”I heard the voice calling me for the second time. I traced the voice to the garage and saw Angela and Kelly seated inside the car. I tried to get closer to them, but she drove off. I didn't try to run after the car, knowing it would be pointless to do that. For the second consecut
Tony Wood's POV“Where's Angela?Where's Kelly?” I popped the question without a direct lead. I was hoping that someone would sacrifice themselves to speak up.“Oh, shit. She fucking escaped. How did this happen? Where are the fucking nurses?” The doctor screamed. He slammed the wall to demonstrate his rage. He was about to leave when I held him back. “Where the heck are you going?”“What the heck is this? Let go of me,” he requested.“I want to summon all the nurses to know who was on duty,” he explained.I was ruthless!I refused to let him go, knowing that he was the reason for Angela's escape. If he hadn't hesitated when I called for her arrest, Angela would be sleeping behind bars already.“Oh, come on, Tony. You know I have nothing to do with this. I was only trying to protect the image of my hospital,” he claimed. That was the lamest excuse I've ever heard. The excuse made me even more angry. I wasn't conscious of my act anymore. And the next minute, I was already draggi
Tony Woods' POVI am at the point where I genuinely don't know what to do. It feels like I'm struggling. It feels like I'm standing at a crossroads, stuck and uncertain about my actions. The people you think you know. You come to realize that maybe you don't know them after all.And that shakes you.I usually have answers, but now, I'm the dumbest man alive.I'm used to having directions. But this time, I feel lost in the dark. And it's crazy each time I remember that I am all alone. I don't see anyone coming to salvage my pathetic situation. Each time I recall that I'm the architect of my misfortunes, my heart bleeds. The question that keeps echoing in my head when I wake up every morning is, “When will I finally get out of this?” To worsen it all, I am not guaranteed a perfect response, let alone a remedy. “What the hell is going on here, Mr. Woods? Why did you invite the police to my hospital?” The Doctor asked me in a faint tone. He was panting heavily after running to m
Tony Woods POV“Are you sure you are ready for this moment, Mr. Woods? I want you to take your time and reflect on it before coming up with a decision. What I'm about to disclose might sound partially devastating and heartbreaking to you. And I am sure you wouldn't want that for yourself. Remember your health status. I don't want to be the one to escalate your blood pressure,” The doctor retreated just when he was on the verge of disclosing my son's test results. It wasn't a question I found quite intriguing. But somehow, I was able to control my rage. “Really? Are we going to do this all day? Come on, Doctor. I am not interested in any of your jokes. Just hit the nail on the head. Doctor, if I weren't ready, I wouldn't be here. As we speak, I am involved in an ongoing police investigation,” I revealed. What Ignorance! If only he knew what I've been through in the last 48 hours. “Oh, shit. What did I just do?” I spoke in a low tone. I got carried away by my emotions. It t
