“Shit,” I told my roommate. “I forgot my ear monitor.”
“Go back for it, but don’t let Jenny see you. Make sure to return before we go on stage.”
I waited for Jenny to go through the door and quickly ran up the stairs. I was walking along the hallway when I saw two men walking in my direction. My heart skipped a beat when I recognized one of them. Mason Steele, the host of the party.
The most handsome man I had ever seen was wearing a dark blue suit and strolling casually along the hallway. My heartbeat skyrocketed as I wondered whether to return or continue. Well, he has already seen me so it was better to get on with it.
I stopped moving as they drew closer.
“Good evening, gentlemen.” I said not quite meeting their eyes.
“Who are you?” It was Mason who spoke. His voice was laced with authority.
I managed to snatch a look at his perfect face. His perfect blue eyes were watching me. His dark brown hair was combed back. He had thick eyebrows and very kissable lips. I shook my head when I realized I was staring.
“My name is April, and I’m one of the singers. I forgot my ear monitor in the room so I’m off to retrieve it.”
“Weren’t you given the rules?”
“Let it be, Mason.” His companion said. “The poor girl is shaking so much she might fall. Please go ahead, miss.”
“Thank you so much,” I said before practically running away from them, releasing a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
I began to fear I’d forget the lyrics. It was when I reach the room that I realized the door was locked. Shit. How did I not think of that? Jenny was surely going to kill me. I was ruining everything before we even got to the stage.
Since I had no phone, I had to run back to the garden. I was almost at the stairs when I saw an angry Jenny coming up the stairs.
“You’re going to be the death of me, April.” She said and I took a deep breath.
“I’m very sorry.”
Jenny passed by me and went to open the door. I ran in and grabbed my ear monitor before getting out in the speed of lighting. Jenny and I went outside in silence. I knew she was angry and I understood. At that point, even if she had taken away my role, I wouldn’t have minded. I was a wreck already.
“You mess up and you’re fired,” Jenny warned me as we joined the others.
Except for the stage, the backyard had mostly dull lights. We stepped on the stage and quickly positioned ourselves as music played in the background. Surprisingly, I was feeling quite confident. Maybe it was because of the darkness, and the fact that I could not see those watching us clearly.
Jenny gave me a microphone.
“Don’t disappoint.”
The others were already. The music stopped as we waited for our song’s beat. The dancers behind me started moving their bodies immediately, while I waited a while before starting to sing. Surprisingly, my voice came out clearly, better than I had expected.
As time went on, I began to enjoy myself, trying to forget that Mason was one of those watching me. I knew I had not made the best first impression so I tried to ensure I didn’t ruin his party.
There was little cheer but that was expected from snobby rich people. It was after the performance that we received some applause. The second song was easier, and I had more confidence. The crowd got ecstatic as we completed, most likely due to the gallons of alcoholic drinks they’d consumed. I was more than relieved when the performance ended without a mess on our side.
“You did well,” Jenny told us. “Especially you April. I’m pleasantly surprised. That was really great. I won’t be surprised if Mason invites over for his next party.”
Flashes of Mason’s billion dollar face appeared in my mind. The man was so good-looking. I remembered those shouldering eyes and how they focused on me. A sweet feeling swirled all over my body and I sighed. Any woman who got in his arms should consider themselves lucky. The man was a walking wet dream and I knew he dated only the most beautiful women in the world. Since I was not among those, I decided to focus on the food. A ‘foodgasm’ was sufficient for me to forget my loneliness, and I knew I’ll be reaching one soon because the food was totally delicious.
Unfortunately, that did not happen because I was quickly dragged away from the table by Jenny.
“What song can you sing best for a solo?” she asked once we are out of earshot.
“Rising moon,” That was the title of my favorite song. “Why?”
“Because you have another performance in exactly fifteen minutes.”
“What?”
“Yes, in the study, for Mason and three other gentlemen.”
“What? That was not in the plan.”
“It is now.”
“Why?”
“Mason asked for a solo performance from you.”
My lips hung open. How angry could he be that he wanted to humiliate me?
“Why?”
“Because he wants you to perform, I guess. Look April, I don’t have time for drama so you better chose a song right now and prepare. Mind you, it was an order so you can’t exactly say no.”
“Why not?”
“I know what kind of man he is, and we are in his house. Now if you want all of us to get out of here alive, you better do as told.”
“If he’s that dangerous, why did you bring us here?” My heart was now beating like crazy and I was beginning to feel sweaty.
“Money.” She said like it’s an appropriate answer. I couldn’t believe she was willing to put us in a dangerous situation because of money.
“Now I feel very scared.”
“Get your act together. Let’s go to the room. I don’t like this as much as you but we don’t have many options right now.”
This information did not help with my nerves. When we reached the room assigned to us, Jenny poured me a small glass of brandy and I drank it all in one gulp. Walking to the mirror, I started singing my favorite song.
Jenny sat on the couch, and watched, giving me advice on certain parts that needed improvement. I could barely hear what she was saying.
A few minutes later, she took me to the room where Mason was. There were three men in the room. Two were seated on one couch while Mason had sat on a straight chair behind a desk at the back of the room. He looked like a teacher about to watch one of his students give a presentation for the first time.
“This is April, one of my best singers.” Jenny introduced me before leaving the room.
“I’m going to perform one of our best songs,” I said. “It’s called Rising Moon. I hope you’ll enjoy it.”
The two men nodded in anticipation while Mason maintained a poker face. Taking a deep breath, I began to sing, making sure to focus more on the gentlemen because Mason’s stare was quite unnerving. I sent a few random glances his way towards the end and noticed he was staring quite intensely. Despite that, I managed to make it all the way to the end. When it was over, the other men clapped.
“That was amazing,” one of them said.
“Right.” His friend agreed and turned. “And she’s very beautiful. What do you think, Mason?”
“It was bearable,” Mason said. “You can leave now.”
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. I smiled at the two men.
“Thank you so much, gentlemen.” I said and started moving towards the door.
“Wait. I’ll walk you out.” the youngest man in the room said. I smiled and waited for him to catch up. When we were outside, I breathed.
“Is he always like that?”
“Who. Mason?”
“Yes, he is quite intense. But I’m not, which is why we should go and dance. That’s a nice song playing.”
“Sure, why not?” I said. If he was in Mason’s circle, he was probably rich. The handsome young man also seemed like a really nice person and I didn’t want to let that go easily. In that business, building connections and networking is very important. Without that, you are nothing.
I found out his name as Jed, and it suited him well. He was tall, and very handsome, a bit on the cute side but I liked it. He didn’t look as threatening as all the men I had seen in that house so far. Jed was safe, at least he seemed to be. So far he had been the nicest person to me at that party which meant a lot to me. When we got to the dance floor, we started dancing to the amazing songs played by the DJ.
When the party ended, we exchanged numbers. As the limo went through the gate, I sighed in relief and the tension left my body. Finally, I was free again.
The last thing I ever wanted to do is return to Mason’s house for whatever reason. I hoped I never had to.
April.I couldn't shake the picture off my mind; the two of them standing close before kissing passionately in from of cameras. It was the ultimate betrayal, something I had not expected from Mason. I thought I'd come to know him, but clearly I had lied to myself. The rumors were right. Mason Steele was a heartless man. The pain was strong, stronger than everything I'd ever felt. It felt like someone had hit my heart with a baseball bat to shatter it into a million pieces. A few days ago, he'd promised me the world only to turn around and show Carolina of to the world. At first, I wanted to believe something was off, but Mason looked so much into that kiss. He'd kissed her so passionately. It appeared that they'd set a trap for me. Hannah had appeared with them. Had they planned her kidnapping too? Everything was confusing. The fact that Mason refused to pick up my calls made me even more suspicious."You need to get out of bed," my mother said. "You've been in bed for five days. Th
I stared at the faded poster of Luisa Cove as I belted out lyrics of the new song Maria had written. I hit a high note before suddenly stopping. I couldn't do it anymore. "I'm sorry guys, I said. I'm not feeling well at all. Could you please give me five minutes?" "It's alright,"Jenny, who had been watching me with a concerned look said. I had reunited with my former band for a new song they wanted to perform. I also wanted to spend time with them since they were my closest friends. Stepping away from my former band mates, I went to the wall. Leaning against it, I slid down to the floor and raised my knees before placing my head on them. I had been trying to reach Mason for hours but his cell was off. I even called his office and his personal assistant assured me he was fine. So why wasn't he reaching out to me? It bothered me so much. What if he was still with Carolina? What if she manipulated him into believing her side of the story?"Hey April, you must be feeling sad because M
Mason. After listening to everything April said, I felt very angry that I had been dinning with a snake all along. I called Kyle Barker, a private investigator to give me hidden information about Carolina Mendoza, which he did. What I saw in that document shocked me. All doubts were erased. I knew she was the one who kidnapped my sister. Now that I knew the true nature of the person who lived inside, seeing Carolina's huge mansion felt different. I had always admired the grandeur and luxury it consisted of, but now it disgusted me because I knew it was built on the blood of innocent people. Carolina was not the self made woman her reputation made her out to be, she was a robber who had risen by stepping on others. My heart raced in anticipation as I stepped out of the car and walked up the driveway. Taking a deep breath, I went to the door and rang it. It was like the housekeeper had been expecting me. She didn't look surprised. "Please come in, Mr. Steele." I followed her through
Mason’s POVA continuous beeping sound woke me up. Opening my eyes, I squinted at the brilliant white ceiling before closing them again. Whoever thought it was a good idea to use such a bright color for a hospital room must have been mad.I could tell I was in the hospital by the smell and beeping machine with a cord attached to my hand. After blinking several times to help my eyes get acquainted with the light, I opened them fully. I was alone, thankfully. I looked at the blue bed sheet covering my body and pushed part of it off.Memories of my last minutes of consciousness flooded my mind, reminding me of the problem at hand. Hannah was still missing. I pressed the sound button by the bed to get someone in the room. I needed to get out of there.Almost immediately, the door opened and Carolina walked in. I frowned. Was she the one taking care of me? I was definitely not happy to see her.“Finally,” she said, coming to the bed and kissing me on the forehead. “You’re awake. Was almost
April's POVImages, video footage and text swirled over the screen intermittently as a female reporter's voice spoke in the background. I backed off to the nearest chair, letting my body collapse on it. With wide eyes, I continued to stare at the screen, which had now switched to the station’s studio and listened to the news reader as he spoke about the shooting that had left Mason Steele in hospital fighting for his life.Despite knowing it was futile, I dialled his number and held the phone to my ear. No one answered just as I expected. I had been trying his number in vain for hours. Quickly getting up, I grabbed my purse from the table and walked out of the apartment.Chilly midnight air greeted me when I left the building and drove the car I'd parked outside. I drove like a mad woman, in the bid to reach my destination as fast as possible. My heart relaxed as the hospital came into view. After parking the car, I stalked to the building. A team of paparazzi hounded me but I refuse
Mason’s POV“You have to do everything possible to find her,” my aunt Eleanor said, clutching my hands over the table. Her grip was tight and her knuckles were extremely pale. I wondered what was wrong with her. She seemed so scared, even more scared than I was, and yet I was sure she didn't love Hannah that much. For the most part, they didn't get along very well.“I’m trying, aunt Eleanor. You know I will do everything possible to find her.”“You need to find her before anything happens.”“What are you scared of aunt Eleanor?” I asked. She quickly withdrew her hand and jumped in her seat. Her unexpected reaction was starting to make me feel suspicious. “What kind of question is that? Hannah is my dear niece. We might not get along all the time but I don't want to see her die.” “She will not die,” I said. “Please leave now. I have some work to do. I’ll call you in case of anything.”I felt more relieved after she left. Settling down, I started to do some paperwork. The cops had p
April's POV“It’s her,” I said thirty minutes later. We were in a private jet on our way to Miami. “It has to be.”Mason turned and gave me a confused look, his brows furrowing. “What are you talking about?” He asked.“Carolina Mendoza,” I replied. “I think she’s the one who has kidnapped your sister.”Mason’s eyes narrowed. He didn't seem convinced. He had probably never considered it, given that Carolina was a good friend of his. “Why would she do something like that?”“Because she wants to separate us.”“I know Carolina likes me but I don't think she would do something like that just to get rid of you. She’s quite stubborn but not immature enough to play high school games.”“You clearly don't know her well enough. You have no idea about all the things she has done to me in order to keep us apart.”“You never tell me anything. What did she do?”I studied his face, looking for signs that he would believe me. “She-”The door to the cockpit suddenly opened and the young copilot steppe
Two hours later, Mason and I were riding down a smooth footpath. Having never been on a horse before, the experience was quite daunting at first. Mason seemed like a reckless schoolboy ready for adventure when he climbed on a black stallion without fear. Meanwhile, I'd settled for a little brown mare that seemed almost as timid as I was when the stable boy helped me settle on it.Although I was very scared at first, Mason’s confidence soon gave me the energetic boldness I needed. Within a few minutes, I was racing him down the hilly path.Trading words every now and then, we found ourselves in a small artificial forest that we had been briefed about. It was a beautiful forest with many beautiful trees, well kept bushes, painted stones and manicured picnic lawns.“I wish we hadn't eaten,” I said, staring wistfully at one of the picnic areas. “Would have loved to have my lunch over here.”Mason smiled as he studied the area. “Certainly looks very nice,” he commented. “We need to get of
April. The single’s event was held in the resort’s conference hall. When I went in, a middle aged woman was giving a speech about how to interact with new people. Soon, she wrapped up.“We’re going to start with a game called lock and key,” she said. “For this game, men will be given a lock and women will receive a key. We’ll have enough time to mingle with each other. After speaking to a person, you’ll try the lock to see if it opens. If not, proceed to another person and try again. It will be a fun game. You all need to stand and let our employees move the chairs to the back of the room so that we can use the space for the game.”People stood up and started moving around, leaving the chairs. Suddenly, there was considerable silence. I turned to follow everyone’s gaze, then I realized why they had frozen.Mason Steele was walking into the room. He wore a dark blue suit and had his dark hair combed to the side. The tall and handsome man exuded sophistication and confidence which had a
