The Sunday morning painting finishes on a Friday.

Samuel texts me at ten in the morning from the second bedroom studio.

Samuel: Done. See.

I am in a client intake meeting for a new case. A woman named Theresa, who has been waiting three years for housing discrimination, has finally reached the point where Adaeze believes we can close it permanently.

I excuse myself for five minutes.

I go to the second bedroom.

The painting is on the easel.

The pan is in the center.

Gerald's pan.

  • Seducing My Brother-in-Law   Chapter 55- January Honest

January arrives, and we stop waiting. Not dramatically. Not with ceremony. The way the decisions that have already been made arrive at their moment of action. Quietly. On the morning of the second Friday of January, Samuel comes out of the second-bedroom studio at seven, sits across from me at the kitchen table, and looks at me with the expression that means something has finished resolving and is ready to be spoken."January," he says."Yes," I say."The most honest month," he says."Yes," I say.He wraps both hands around his coffee. He looks at me directly."Are you ready?" he says.I look at him.The man who planned from the first of October, cleaned his father's pan, called Arthur the night before the proposal, and painted the feeling of something arriving early."Yes," I say. "Are you?""Yes," he says."Then January," I say."January," he says.We drink our coffee. We go to work.---The appointment is on a Tuesday morning at nine. Not dramatic. Not announced to anyone. Adaeze k

  • Seducing My Brother-in-Law   Chapter 54- November

November arrives, and the city pulls inward. The same city. The same streets. But the quality changes. People walk faster. Coats come out. The outdoor tables at Rosa’s disappear on the first cold weekend, and the restaurant becomes itself in its indoor form, warmer, more interior, the specific density of a space that has accepted winter is coming and has set its face toward it.I love November for the same reason I love January. It asks nothing of you except that you show up as you actually are.The Diane expedited compliance review begins on the third of November. The independent verification firm, a group called Meridian HR Partners that both sides agreed to in October, sends a team of four into the company for two weeks. They review documentation, interview employees, audit the department restructuring, and verify that Craig Elton's termination was handled correctly and in full.Imani coordinates our office’s side of the process. She does it with the efficiency of someone who has b

  • Seducing My Brother-in-Law   Chapter 53- The Chen interview Airs

The Divine Thomas interview airs on a Thursday evening in October. Robert Chen emails Samuel and me three days before it releases. He says the second documentary series, published on the fifteenth, and the Divine interview are the centerpiece of the final episode. He says she was thorough. He says she surprised him. He says that is the highest compliment he gives subjects. I read the email twice. Samuel reads it once. “She surprised him,” Samuel says. “Yes,” I say. “Divine Thomas surprised a documentary filmmaker who has been making films about complicated people for twenty years,” he says. “Yes,” I say. He looks at the email. “What do you think she said?” he says. “I think she said what she told me in the Okafor conference room in May,” I say. “What she did. Why? What happened after?” I pause. “What the legal aid clinic in the South Bronx taught her in sixty hours.” “Will it land?” he says. I think about this. “For the right people,” I say. “The people who

  • Seducing My Brother-in-Law   Chapter 52- The painting that comes early

Samuel paints through the night.I know because I wake at two, the second bedroom light is on, and the specific sound of brush on canvas fills the apartment the way it does when he has found something and will not stop until it is caught.I do not go in.I lie in the dark and listen and feel the specific warmth of being in the same building as someone who is fully alive inside their work.At five, I make tea.At five thirty, he comes out.Paint on both forearms. His hair pushed back. The expression of someone who has arrived somewhere they were moving toward and is sitting with the arrival. He sits across from me.“Done?” I say.“Done,” he says.“Show me,” I say.“After coffee,” he says.I pour his coffee. We sit at the kitchen table at the specific hour of five thirty in the morning, when the city is in its pre-dawn honesty and the neighborhood has not yet started its day, and everything is still and clear.“What did you paint?” I say.“The specific quality of something arriving befo

  • Seducing My Brother-in-Law   Chapter 51- Whoever comes next

The conversation happens on a Tuesday night in September. Not planned. Not set up. The way the conversations that matter most happen, between one thing and another, when both people have stopped performing the day and are themselves in a warm kitchen.Samuel cooks in Gerald’s pan. I review the Theresa housing case at the table. The September evening comes through the open window, and the neighborhood talks to itself below, and the apartment holds us both in its specific, settled warmth.“I have been thinking,” Samuel says.“About what?” I say without looking up.“About the Sunday morning painting,” he says. “The pan. The half-lit sign.”“What about it?” I say.“I painted it for whoever comes later,” he says. “That is what your mother said. The written recipe. The saying is in a different form, so whoever comes later can have it.”I look up.He stands at the stove with his back to me. He stirs something. He does not turn around.“Samuel,” I say.“Yes,” he says.“Are you telling me some

  • Seducing My Brother-in-Law   Chapter 6- Matthew

Matthew Cross is still smiling. That is the most dangerous thing about him — the smile. It is the smile of a man who arrived at this hotel tonight knowing exactly what he would find and is deeply, privately pleased to have been right. He is handsome in a calculated way. Polished. The kind of man wh

The four seconds in that hallway nearly destroyed everything.Nearly.Michael looked at Samuel. Samuel looked at Michael.
